B. Answer the questions.
As a child, Alain Robert was afraid of heights. One day, when he was 12, he returned home from school. At the front door of his building, he looked for his keys. He didn’t have them. It was 3:30, and his parents worked until 6:00 p.m. Robert looked at his apartment on the eighth floor. He saw an open window. He closed his eyes and pictured himself climbing the building. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.”A quarter of an hour later, he was in his house, and his fear of heights was gone.
Today, Robert (known as the French Spideman) still climbs buildings. In 2004, he climbed Taipei 101(the tallest building in the world at the time), and in 2011 he climbed the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai. To reach the top of the a building, Robert usually uses only his hands and special shoes. To climb the Burj Khalifa Tower, though, he was made to wear safety ropes.
Robert climbs as a hobby. He also does it to make money for charity( for children and the homeless). Climbing is his passion. Although many climbing accidents have left him seriously disabled, he has become one of the best solo climbers in the world. Alain says in an interview, “We set ourselves limits, but we are all strong enough to aim higher, to achieve our goals. All we have to do is find such strength within ourselves.”
When Robert climbs, he wants to send a message to people. If you have a dream-something you really want to do—it can become real. But you must be brave and keep trying. If something bad happens, don’t give up. Close your eyes and tell yourself, “ I can do it.”

D. Answer the questions.
It may seem strange to think about countries being“happy”when most of the world is fighting with the coronavirus(冠状病毒),but a yearly report was released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, which ranked the world’s countries by how happy they are.
To get an idea of how happy people are, the researchers told people to imagine life as a ladder(阶梯). The worst possible life would be on step 0. The best possible life would be on step 10. Then the researchers asked people where they were on the ladder. They asked this question of 10,000 people in 156 different countries over the last three years.
For the third year in a row, the report named Finland as the world’s happiest country. This time Finland was even farther ahead of other countries than it was last time. The other top five countries were Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway.
To help explain the results, the researchers studied several important areas, such as how much money people make, how long they live, how free they are, how much support they get from the people around them, and whether the government is seen as honest.
Clearly, the kind of happiness that is being measured by the report isn’t just about laughing, smiling, and telling jokes. It’s more about how satisfied people are with their lives.
The report suggests that when people live in a place where they trust other people and the government, they are more likely to be happy. The report’s authors describe these as“high-trust”countries.
As countries around the world face the big challenges brought by the coronavirus, the report’s authors note that happiness doesn’t always disappear during difficult times.

D.Answer the questions.
It was a few years ago.
A friend had sent me a restaurant gift card for Christmas and I had picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it.
It felt good taking my two grown sons and daughter to a nice sit-down restaurant instead of the fast-food places we usually ate at.
The meal was delicious and we all had a good time just being together.
When the waitress brought the check. I looked down at it. The gift card covered almost all of it. I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. I saw two bills in my wallet. The first would cover the rest of the bill and give the waitress a nice tip. The second bill was much larger so I reached down to pick out the first one.
At that moment my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a waiter in a restaurant much like the one we were in now. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I went home just only making enough to feed my young family. I also remembered how more than once I saw the waitress counting their little tips worrying about how they were going to pay the rent and buy their kids things they needed. I remembered the pain in their eyes and sadness in their faces at the end of the day.
I blinked(眨眼)and was back in the present again. My fingers touched the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled,
pushed it back down, and picked out the much larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hard-working waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.
We are all children of the same earth. Do your best to be kind then.

A group of scientists discovered a gas called phosphine(磷化氢)on Venus(金星). That means there may be living things on the planet, which made many people start to imagine the talk between aliens and humans. A reporter from Washington Post wrote a letter to people of Earth on behalf of(代表) the citizens on Venus.
Attention, People of Earth
Fine. The big secret is out. Many of your finest scientists have discovered there is life tens of millions of miles away—here, on the beautiful planet of Venus. Congratulations! However, we have a polite request: Please stay away.
We're serious. No spacecrafts to Venus, no tasks, no visits. If we wake up one morning and see so many of you people wandering around in spacesuits, we're going to be really upset. We don't want to be impolite. It's just that we're shocked by what you've got going on down there. Earth looks like a mess. You've got health problems, environmental pollution, traffic jams, political fights, etc. No wonder so many of you want to leave Earth for another planet. We know you'd like it here. That's what frightens us. You’d all move to Venus at once. If we start having you all up here, pretty soon, the Martians (火星人)and Jupiterians(木星人)are going to come, too. But we can't handle so much. Venus is not Earth 2. We suggest ___________________________ because ___________________________.
God bless you!

Computers vs. Textbooks
①The debate on "textbooks vs. computers" has been going on for years. How much technology is enough in the classroom? Should textbooks be replaced by computers?
②There is no doubt that computers are powerful tools. Computer-based lesson plans are updated in real time. New information can be added as soon as changes take place. Students can find the latest information for the subjects they are studying.
③With computers, students can learn how to use them for the rest of their lives. Today, computers are used in almost all areas. Students can prepare themselves better for the future if they have computers.
④However, despite these advantages, I think textbooks must stay.
⑤Textbooks are professionally edited. All the facts have been checked. They are put together in the best way. Each chapter builds on what a student has previously learned. On the internet, however, not all the information is true to organized.
⑥With textbooks, it is easier for students to take notes. Scientists have found that taking notes by hand helps students learn more.
⑦ Textbooks are also less expensive than computers. While most families can afford textbooks, not all of them can afford a computer. Every student should be allowed to learn what he needs to learn. It's wrong to rob a student of his right to learn just because he can't afford the material.
⑧Computers are playing an important role in education. They allow students to learn more. However, I don't think they can replace textbooks. If students want to learn well, they must use textbooks. Do you agree with me?

Mr. Smith stood before his class of 30 students and was going to hand out the final exam papers. "I know how hard you have all worked to get ready for this test," he said. "And because I know you are all able to understand these questions, I'm ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test."
A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. Mr. Smith looked at the rest of the students and said. "Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance." Two more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. Mr. Smith then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class. Keep believing yourself.
I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.
The same is true of students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life's lessons, whether from school education or from events in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80 percent of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now and you realize that you have some limits. However, _____________________________________________. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma, said, "We do not conquer the mountain, but ourselves."

81. What kind of students can get A according to the writer?

Dear Mr. Henshaw,
I finished Beggar Bears in two nights. It is a really good book. At first, I was surprised because it wasn't funny like your other books, but then I got to thinking (you said readers should think) and decided a book doesn't have to be funny to be good, although it often helps. This book did not need to be funny.
In the first Chapter I thought it was going to be funny. I guess I expected it because of your other books and the mother bear was teaching her cubs to beg from tourists in Yellowstone Park. Then when the mother died because a stupid tourist fed her a cupcake in a plastic bag and she ate the bag, too, I knew this was going to be a sad book. Winter was coming on, tourists were leaving the park and the little bears didn't know how to look for food for themselves. When they hibernated (冬眠) and then woke up in the middle of winter because they had eaten all the wrong things and hadn't stored up enough fat, I almost cried. I sure was relieved when the nice ranger (护林员) and his boy found the young bears and fed them and the next summer taught them to hunt for the right things to eat.
I wonder what happens to the fathers of bears. Do they just go away?
Sometimes I lie awake listening to the gas station “pingping”, and I am upset because I am afraid something might happen to Mom. She is so little compared to most moms, and she works so hard. I don't think Dad is much interested in me. He didn’t phone when he said he would.
I hope that_____________________.
Sincerely,
Leigh Botts

D. Answer the questions (根据短文回答下列问题)(12分)
A little stream ran down from a high mountain far, far away through many villages and forests, until it reached a desert. The stream then thought, “I’ve been through countless difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert!” But as she started her journey, she found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed and was very unhappy. “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean in the end,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice came, “If a breeze(微风)can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream replied, “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.” “That’s because you can’t give up what you are. If you like to do it, and let yourself evaporate(蒸发)into the breeze, it can take you across, and you can reach the ocean,” said the desert.
“Give up what I am now and disappear into the breeze? No! No!” The little stream could not accept this idea. After all, she had never experienced anything like it before.
“The breeze can carry the vapor(水蒸气)across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again to continue its course,” explained the desert very patiently.
“And whether you are a river or vapor, your nature never changes,” continued the desert. Hearing this, the little stream rushed into the open arms of the breeze, which carried her to the next stage of her life.
The course of our lives is like the experience of the little stream.

Police officer Dennis was recently patrolling(巡逻) the streets of Newark, New Jersey. Suddenly, he found four men fighting. As he approached, one of the men tried fleeing, but failed. The police horse tracked down the suspect and arrested him.
“He thought he was going to get away,” Dennis said. “But you can't outrun these horses.”
In Newark and cities across the country, retired racehorses are finding new careers fighting crime. The horses are helping departments with various types of police work. Horses have helped patrol parking lots and schools. They have patrolled city streets. They have chased down criminals.
Police officers say retired racehorses make perfect additions to their departments for several reasons. The 1,200-pound horses are effective crime-fighting forces. The mounted(骑马的)police officers used them to arrest thieves. The animals’ natural intelligence helps as well. Horses can be easily trained to perform duties connected with fighting crime. In addition to being intelligent, horses are generally calm animals. The horse must also be able to follow six commands—walk, stop, stand, back up, side left, and side right. If a horse does not meet his department’s needs, it is returned.
Most of the horses came from Jennifer Nagle’s rescue group. The group has found homes for more than 2.000 horses since it was started 20 years ago. However, today’s troubled economy has made the job of Nagle’s group more challenging. Caring for a horse can cost a great deal of money. According to Nagle, the number of horses in need of new homes has multiplied in recent months. Owners used to call her group and offer one horse for adoption. Now, some inquire about finding homes for five or six retired racehorses.
The adoption of horses by police departments is a win-win for all. The horses enjoy new homes and companions(同伴). Police departments feel closer to people in the community.
“The kids love the horses. A 3-year-old even walked up and petted his police horse.”
The animals also have the ability to ease possibly upsetting situations. Another child who had gotten lost during a shopping trip could not find his parents. The police let the child pet the animal until the boy's parents were located The child wiped away his tears. He just thought the horse was the greatest thing in the world.

On June 28, my parents celebrated 70 years of marriage. Mom and Dad live in Calverton. They have been through years of hard work and good times, always supporting each other.
When I was a little girl, I remembered my parents working side by side in spring, summer, fall, and winter cleaning or working in the yard, or painting, and wallpapering. They have taught me what hard work is.
My parents bought a house in Elmont. They never believed they’d be able to own their own home, and to them, it was their castle. They worked hard to decorate it and kept it looking beautiful. They taught us to work hard and to appreciate everything we had.
Mom likes everything--sightseeing, clubs, anything, and everything. Dad, even today, can’t understand why she always wants to go out!
Mom is still active with the Red Hatters women’s group and her gardening club. Dad spoils (宠爱) her by taking care of the house, but also watches a lot of baseball and does jigsaw puzzles.
The key to their sweet marriage is that they respect each other.
With the help of my brother, they also stay current with new technology. Their latest acquisition is an iPad.
My brother, who is 67, and I (now 69), have always known we are lucky to have such great parents. My daughter and I try to see them almost every weekend when we play cards together and catch up on the week’s news.
My parents are the glue that holds our whole family together, making holidays and ordinary days special to us all.
I know we are lucky to have them both. I even save all of their voice mail messages, just so I’ll have their voice to hear when eventually they are not here. But Mom keeps telling us all she’s definitely going to live to be 100, so we will have a few more holidays, birthdays, and memories to experience. I learn what love is from my parents.

D. Answer the questions (根据以下内容回答问题)(12分)
Many people like to go diving(潜水)when they are on holiday. Jenney, a 14-year-old girl, is getting ready to have a special dive with sharks in the sea of Florida. It’s really expensive for her to do it. Sounds crazy?
Shark diving is big business in some places and that’s raising a question about how close people should get to them. Some brave divers think it is no problem for them to get close to sharks. Divers in Florida, for example, often have fun with lemon sharks, which have attacked people a few times before. On the other side, many people are against shark diving. They think no one should go diving with sharks. And it is foolish to feed sharks while diving and bring them close to busy beaches.
Bob Dimond has been a diver for 30 years. He’s worried that sharks may lose their fear of humans. “The reason why people feed sharks is to attract them, but people don’t want to be sharks’ food. However, when sharks learn to connect humans with food, they approach to see if they can find something to eat, Bob says. “ That’s reason enough to stay away from sharks.”
Bob has created the Marine(海洋的)Safety Group. He and his friends believe if people feed a wild animal, they will increase the chance to be attacked. Therefore, their goal is to stop all shark feeding. In fact, shark feeding has never been directly associated with an attack on a human. When a shark strikes, it is usually “hit and run”. It bites and then quickly releases the person and disappears.
Obviously, sharks make shark diving so attractive. For divers such as Jenney, diving with sharks is a once-in-a-life experience. Jenney says, “I actually had a chance to lie down on the bottom of the ocean and the sharks were right in front of me. And I could see their mouths and their eyes and feed them. I used to know only a little about sharks, but now I want more teenagers to join me.”
78. Will Jenney have to pay a lot of money for shark diving?
79. Who might be against shark diving according to the passage?
80. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to?
81. Why has Bob created the Marine Safety Group?
82. What does Jenney think of her once-in-a-life experience?
83. Do you think sharks will welcome people to their world? Why or why not?
答案:78. Yes, she will.79. Bob Dimond(and his friends.)80. Sharks.81. To stop all shark feeding.
82. She thinks she can know more about sharks than before and she wants more teenagers to join her.83. No, they don’t. Because people will pollute the environment and hurt them.(Any reasonable answer.)84. 略

Special delivery
Being a UPS driver, the holidays are always crazy, and I'm always exhausted by the end of the day, losing my own mood. But on the 24th last year, I went to make my last delivery. When I carried a package up to the home's doorstep, I found a poster next to a box covered in Christmas paper.
The poster read: For our delivery person. Santa loves you! in crooked letters that looked like a child's writing. I peered into the box, and it was filled with Christmas cookies, all hand-decorated. I glanced over, and through the curtains at the front window, a little girl with a toothy smile gave me a happy wave. My insides melted as I waved back mouthing, 80!"-two words that couldn't possibly sum up what her thoughtfulness meant to me.
On the way home, I put on my Santa hat, nibbled on the cookies and sang along with the carols on the radio, feeling the true magic of this wonderful time of year!

When small turns out to be big
A couple of weeks before Christmas, I loaded up my car with donations and took them to the thrift store(旧货店).After I returned, I noticed a brand-new pair of fuzzy pink slippers had been left behind. The store was nearly 30 minutes away and I didn't plan on going back anytime soon, so I threw them in my closet. Besides, they were extra small. So tiny that I doubted any adult women could wear that size.
The next day, I went to the grocery store and noticed an Angel Tree in the lobby with gifts underneath to go to a homeless shelter. One of the paper angels had fallen off, so I went to pick it up and took a moment to read the wish. It was from a woman who was asking for a warm pair of slippers-size extra small. Pink is my favorite colour, she'd written. With great joy, I went home, wrapped up the slippers and went back to the store. As I placed the package under the Angel Tree,a store clerk smiled and thanked me.
‘Actually, I'm the thankful one.’ I thought. Sometimes the unexpected things in life turn into the best gifts of all!"

FOMO
posted 2 hours ago by Mr. Braddock Grade teacher
Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. You aren’t able to do your best and keep up with all of your responsibilities unless you sleep well. I’m sure you already know that you should go to bed at a reasonable hour. Most experts agree that the ideal number of hours is eight and this has been accepted as common sense for as long as I can remember. However, I was young once and I know that most of you get much less sleep than that—and in some cases it will be affecting your school work.
I read an interesting article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in Wales Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at appropriate times but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night not to use the bathroom or have a snack but because of a new phenomenon FOMO –fear of missing out!
According to the article, schoolchildren are suffering because of growing trend(趋势)to wake up during the night to check social medial. Afraid of missing a reply or opportunity to take part in a chat, teenagers are waking at all times of the night, going online and getting involved. All this takes place when they should be sound asleep.
Experts are worried about this growing trend and the report shows some worrying statistics that I’d like to share with you.
• 23% of 12 to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media. Another 15% wake up at night once a week for the same reason.
• One in three students are tired all the time and unable to do the work to the best of their ability.
• Students who use social media during the night are more likely to feel extremely sad and anxious.
So, I’d like to ask you to ________________________________________________.

D. Answer the questions (根据短文回答下列问题)(12分)
When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.” A quarter of an hour later, he was in his house, and his fear of heights was gone.
Today, Robert (known as the French Spideman) still climbs buildings. In 2004, he climbed Taipei 101 (the tallest building in the world at the time), and in 2011 he climbed the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai. To reach the top of a building, Robert usually uses only his hands and special shoes. To climb the Burj Khalifa Tower, though, he was made to wear safety ropes.
Robert climbs as a hobby. He also does it to make money for charity (for children and the homeless).
Close your eyes and tell yourself, “I can do it.”

John Wesley Powell
Every time I go whitewater rafting, I think of an explorer named John Wesley Powell who was an amazing figure in the American West. Powell was fearless and thought nothing of hopping in a boat and rowing down an unknown river. Along the way, he studied geology, plants, and wildlife, teaching himself much about the natural world.
In 1860, Powell joined the army in the Civil War. He was injured and lost his right arm. When the wound was cured, he went back into battle! In 1865, He retired as a major(上校).
Powell took a teaching position as professor of geology even though he had never gone to college himself. During this time, he began to develop a daring plan. He wanted to explore the Grand Canyon by rafting the Colorado River. No one had done such a thing before.
In May of 1869, Powell set out with ten men on the Green River in Wyoming for a ten-month trip. Everyone who saw them leave though they would be done for.
No wonder! They were facing the unknown with every bend of the river. No one knew what rapids(急流)lay ahead or how dangerous they’d be. But Powell refused to give up. He had courage and carefulness. He did what he set out to do. He got a river’s-eye view of one of the most unbelievable natural formations(构造)on Earth. And he lived to tell the tale.
