    Section A

Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

John, an ESL tutor of a community college, moved to New York City with all the members of his family. John is a remarkable teacher, so (1) ________ (be) his students for several years, we all missed him very much since he left. At the party, people walked around and talked with each other cheerfully. I certainly (3) ________ not lightly give up that good opportunity to learn English. Then I tried to think of all sorts of topics to converse with Monica, another ESL teacher.

Just before I was about (4) ________ (run) out of my topics of conversation, suddenly I heard John said to others loudly, "I dig New York!" I immediately asked Monica seriously, "is it really difficult to find a job in New York? Why does John, such (5) ________ outstanding ESL teacher, have to do laborious work?"

Looking puzzled, Monica asked, "Why do you have such a feeling?"

"Haven't you heard him say that he (6) ________ (dig) New York? Is he building a tunnel?" I replied. When she finally understood (7) ________ I said, Monica laughed so hard as to narrowly escape spewing(喷出)her food in her mouth. Wearing a broad smile, she gestured to us to stop talking, and then asked us, the ESL students, (8) ________ we knew the meaning of "I dig New York". All of us shook our heads and said no. Monica then requested John to explain it to us.

    (9) ________ turns out that, in American slang, "I dig New York" means, "I love New York". Though few people say like that nowadays, we can still find it (10) ________ (use) in literary works.

    Section B

Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

    A. request    B. strategic    C. peculiar    D. limits    E. completely    F. approach

    G. circumstances   H. dramatically     I. accompany    J. increase    K. assume

    A single word will help

Let's think about waiting in line. Whether you're at a band, a supermarket, or an amusement park, waiting in line is probably not your idea of fun. Under what __31__ would you be willing to let another person cut in front of you? Is it possible that just a single word from requesters could __32__ increase that likelihood that you'd say, "Yes, go ahead"?

Yes, and the word is because. Behavioral scientist Ellen Langer and her colleagues decided to put the persuasive power of this word to the test. In one study, she arranged for a stranger to __33__ some waiting to use a photocopier and ask "Excuse me. I just have five pages. May I use the machine? "In this situation, 60 percent of the people agreed to allow the stranger to go ahead of them. However, when the stranger followed the __34__ with a reason ("because I am in a rush") almost everyone (94 percent of the people) complied(同意). Then Langer repeated the experiment. This time the stranger also used the word because, but followed it with a(n) __35__ meaningless reason ("because I have to make copies"). Even with this meaningless reason, 93 percent agreed to let the stranger go first.

This study demonstrates the unique motivational influence of the word "because".

Of course like most things, the power of because has its __36__. In the previous study the request was small-five copies. Langer repeated the experiment, but told the person to ask to make 20 copies. This time, when the stranger did not use the word because, only 24 percent agreed, and when the meaningless reason was added, this didn't help to produce any __37__ in agreement at all. However, when the request was made with a good reason, 50 percent of the people asked agreed. These findings serve as a reminder to always be sure to __38__ your request with a reason even when you think the reasons might be pretty clear. Too often we mistakenly __39__ that other people understand the reasons behind our requests Rather than telling your children to "come to the table for dinner now" or "go to bed immediately", a more __40__ way would be to provide a reason why you are asking them to take that action -- and not just "because I said so."

    III. Reading Comprehensions

    Section A

Directions: For each blank in the following passage, there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

Many primitive people believed that by eating an animal they could get some of the good __41__ of that animal for themselves. They thought, __42__, that eating deer would make them run as fast as the deer. Some savage(未开化的)tribes believed that eating enemies that had shown __43__ in battle would make them courageous.

Among __44__ people it was once thought that ginger root by some magical power could improve the memory. Eggs were thought to make the voice pretty. Tomatoes also were believed to have magical powers. They were called love apples and were supposed to make people who ate them fall in love. Later another wrong idea about tomatoes __45__, the idea that they were not safe to eat. How __46__ the people who thought tomatoes poisonous would be if they could know that millions of pounds of tomatoes were supplied to soldiers overseas during World War II.

Even today there are a great many wrong ideas about food. Some of them are very widespread. One such idea is that fish is the best brain food. Fish is good brain food just as it is good muscle food and skin food and bone food. But no one has been able to __47__ that fish is any better for the brain than many other kinds of food.

Another such idea is that you should not drink water with meals. __48__ food down with water as a substitute for chewing is not a good idea, but some water with meals has been found to be __49__. It makes the digestive juices flow more freely and helps to digest the food.

Many of the ideas which scientists tell us have no foundation have to do with __50__ of foods. A few years ago the belief became general that orange juice and milk should never be drunk at the same meal. The reason given was that the acid in the orange juice would make the milk curdle and become __51__. As a matter of fact, milk always meets in the stomach a digestive juice which curdles it; the curdling of the milk is the first step in its digestion. A similar wrong idea is that fish and ice cream when eaten at the same meal form a __52__ combination.

Still another wrong idea about mixing foods is that proteins and carbohydrates should never be eaten at the same meal. Many people think of bread, for example, as a carbohydrate food. It is __53__ a carbohydrate food, but it also contains proteins.__54__, milk, probably the best single food, contains both proteins carbohydrates. It is just as __55__ to say that one should never eat meat and potatoes together as it is to say that one should never eat bread or drink milk.

    (A)

"Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."

Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked(搭顺风车)to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person-"Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a chance," she said.

I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While them was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father sad Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.

But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.

As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game.

On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "if you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."

Chicago Doctor Invents Affordable Hearing Aid Superb Performance From Affordable Digital Hearing Aid

Board-certified Ear, Nose, and Throat physician Dr. Cherukuri has done it once again with his newest invention of a medical-grade, ALL-DIGITAL, affordable hearing aid.

Dr. Cherukuri knew that untreated hearing loss could lead to depression, social isolation, anxiety, and symptoms consistent with Dementia and Alzheimer's disease. In his practice he knew that many of his patients would benefit from new digital hearing aids but many couldn't afford the expense, which is not generally covered by Medicare and most private health insurance policies.

Same Technology as $3,500 Hearing Aids

He evaluated all the high priced digital hearing aids on the market and then created his own affordable version -- called MD-Hearing Aid AIR for its virtually invisible, lightweight appearance. This doctor- designed digital hearing aid delivers clear sound all day long and the soft flexible ear domes are so comfortable you hardly realize you are wearing them.

This new digital hearing aid is packed with the features of $3,500 competitors at a small part of the cost. Now most people with hearing loss are able to enjoy crystal clear, natural sound -- in a crowd, on the phone, in the wind -- without "whistling" and annoying background noise.

    (C)

People of every culture tell each other fairy tales and the same story often takes a variety of forms in different parts of the world. The universal appeal of these fantastical tales is frequently owed to the idea that they contain warning messages: in the case of Little Red Riding Hood, to listen to your mother, not wander away from the path, and avoid talking to strangers. "It might be what we find interesting about this story is that it's got this survival-relevant information in it," says anthropologist Tehrani at in Durham University in the UK. But his research suggests otherwise. By exploring how fairy tales have changed and evolved as they spread between cultures, he believed he has discovered what truly makes them appealing.

His analysis focused on Little Red Riding Hood in its many guises(变体), which include another Western fairy tale known as The Wolf and the Kids. Exploring academic collections for variants of these two tales and similar stories from Africa, East Asia and other regions, he ended up with 58 stories recorded from oral traditions.

First the tested some assumptions about which aspects of the story change least as it evolves, indicating their importance. Folklorists believe that events are more central to the story than characters; however, Tehrani found no significant difference in the rate of evolution of events compared with that of characters. "Certain events are very stable because we recognize them as being crucial to the story, but there are lots of other details that can evolve quite freely," he says. Neither did his analysis support the theory that the middle section of a story is the most conserved part. He found no significant difference in the flexibility of events at the beginning, middle and end.

But the really big surprise came when he looked at the warning elements of the story. In his analysis, such elements were just as flexible as seemingly unimportant details. What, then, is important enough to be reproduced from generation to generation?

The answer, it would appear, is horror: horrifying aspects of the story turned out to be the best preserved of all. In many European versions, for example, the wolf feeds Red Riding Hood a meal made from the remains of her grandmother. "There's this brilliant Italian one where the wolf says there's some tortellini(意式饺子), but of course those are her grandmother's ears," says Tehrani. In East Asian variants, a group of sisters spend the night in bed with a tiger and awake to hear it eating the bones of the youngest one. "Those kinds of features are very common in lots of versions of the story" says Tehrani.

Why are these details treated with such respect by generations of storytellers, when other features are readily substituted? Tehrani has an idea: "In an oral context, a story won't survive because of one great teller. It also needs to be interesting when it's told by someone who's not necessarily a great storyteller." Maybe dining on the remains of a relative is so fascinating that it helps the story remain popular, no matter how badly it's told.

    63. What did Tehrani's analysis focus on?

    A. A series of stories resembling each other.

    B. Fairy tales that have been studied before.

    C. Academic collections assumed to be informative

    D. The oral tradition of story-telling worldwide

    64. What can be learned about Little Red Riding Hood from Tehrani's research?

    A. In its different versions events stay the same but characters don't.

    B. All of its different editions have the same middle part.

    C. It is most famous for its survival-relevant information.

    D. There is always something scary in its variants.

    65. According to Tehrani's explanation in the lasst paragraph, what can be inferred?

    A. Whether a story can survive depends on whether the storyteller is interesting or not.

    B. If a story itself were not attractive enough, it could hardly be passed on orally.

    C. Dining on the remains of a relative is the commonest plot in fairy tales.

    D. Good storytellers can make up for the story that is not well written.

    66. The passage is mainly concerned with ________.

    A. why some assumptions about fairy tales are acceptable

    B. which fairy tales have stood the test of time.

    C. what is behind the enduring appeal of fairy tales

    D. how anthropologists have been studying fairy tales

    Section C

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

    A. In this case, the curious Data Scientists is expected to explore the data, come up with the right questions, and provide interesting findings!

    B. Business intelligence Developers are data experts that interact more closely with internal stakeholders to understand the reporting needs.

    C. With the emergence of big data, new roles began popping up in corporations and research centers -- namely, Data Scientists and Data Engineers.

    D. This is why it is essential to know computer science fundamental and programming, including experience with language and database (big/small) technologies.

    E. And they also help people from across the company understand specific questions with ad-hoc reports and charts.

    F. They are software engineers who design, build, integrate data from various resources, and manage big data.

Have you ever heard of Big Data or are you familiar with Data Scientists and Data Engineers? They are probably new job titles, but the core job roles have been around for a while. Traditionally, anyone who analyzed data would be called a "data analyst" and anyone who created back-end platforms to support data analysis would be a "Business intelligence (BI) Developer". ________67________

Here's an overview of the roles of the Data Analyst, BI Developer, Data Scientist and Data Engineer.

Data Analysts are experienced data professionals in their organization who can question and process data, provide reports, summarize and visualize data. They have a strong understanding of how to influence existing tools and methods to solve a problem. ________68________. However, they are not expected to deal with analyzing big data, nor are they typically expected to have the mathematical or research background to develop new algorithms for specific problem.

Skills: Data Analysts need to have a baseline understanding of some core skills: statistics, data mungging(数据处理), data visualization, exploratory data analysis, Tools: Microsoft Excel, SPSS, SPSS Modeler, SAS, SAS Miner, SQL, Microsoft Access, Tableau, SSAS.

________69________. And then they collect requirements, design, and build BI and reporting solutions for the company. They have to design , develop and support new and existing data warehouses, ETL packages, dashboards and analytical reports.

Additionally, they work with databases, both relational and multidimensional, and should have great SQL development skills to integrate data from different resources. They use all of these skills to meet the enterprise-wide self-service needs. BI Developers are typically not expected to perform data analyses.

Data Engineers are the data professionals who prepare the "big data" infrastructure to be analyzed by Data Scientists. ________70________. Then, they write complex queries on that, make sure it is easily accessible, works smoothly, and their goal is optimizing(优化)the performance of their company's big data ecosystem.

They might also run some ETL (Extract Transform and Load) on top of big data-sets and create big data warehouses that can be used for reporting or analysis by data scientists.

    IV. Summary Writing

Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

A driving goal for most websites is for that site to be easily found by people looking for the products or services. One of the ways people may find these sites is via a search engine. With this in mind, companies obviously want their websites to appeal to search engines as well.

First of all, website content should be unique and timely. Only quality content ensures that customers will frequent your website and also recommend it to friends via links or through social channels. This act of sharing not only gives your site more chances of public exposure but it also helps to push up your search engine rankings, which extends huge psychological implication to other engine users as people tend to follow suit.

Another key ranking signal that Google and other search engines weigh heavily is page speed and overall site performance. If your site is loaded with too many high-resolution images and videos or other elements, much viewing will be caused. These will make sluggish, slow loading that frustrate and often drive away visitors. It's time to reduce the page size as all the visitors appreciate faster download. Some are even willing to trade better visual experiences for high viewing speed. As user preference stands on top of any search engine's list of priority, search engines will look very favorably upon the speed improvements of the websites.

In addition, for a hot website, appropriate update frequency is also vital. Although the content is current and up to date when it is first launched, it will soon lose its freshness with the explosion of other various online resources. If the content on your websites has appeared on other sites before, your website is sooner or later to be deserted because of human's nature of having a low boredom threshold(门槛). In turn, your website's search ranking will drop drastically.

Finally, don't look down on customer experience. Too often people ignore the benefits of creating a viewing experience that is enjoyable. When assessing your website's user friendliness, understand that ease of use comes first, but do not discount the benefits of adding a bit of delight into that experience as well.
