A team f researchers frm several institutins in the UK and ne in Estnia has created a type f buy(浮标)that has prven t be effective at frightening seabirds, thus preventing them frm getting caught in gillnets-a type f vertical fishing net that is made f a material that makes it nearly invisible underwater.
Every year, hundreds f thusands f seabirds die when they get caught in gillnets. Sme estimates suggest that up t a half-millin birds are caught in them each year. Over the years, researchers have created devices(装置)t prevent the birds frm trying t catch fish near r in gillnets, but thse didn't wrk well.
T find a way that wuld wrk fr all seabirds, the researchers first studied seabirds in a general sense, lking t find things that they wuld avid. They nted that seabirds avided eye cntact with ther creatures. Then the researchers came up with a simple idea-they put a small ple t a regular buy and then attached a pair f ggly eyes(金鱼眼)t the tp f it. "Peple's interest in meditatin is utpacing what science can prve in terms f effects and benefits," said Jeff Lin, MSU psychlgy dctral candidate and study c-authr. "But it's amazing t me that we were able t see hw ne sessin f a guided meditatin culd prduce changes t brain activity in nn-meditatrs."
"Sme frms f meditatin have yu fcus n a single bject, cmmnly yur breath, but pen mnitring meditatin is a bit different," Lin said. "It has yu tune inward and pay attentin t everything ging n in yur mind and bdy. The gal is t sit quietly and pay clse attentin t where the mind travels withut getting t caught up in the scenery."
Lin and his MSU c-authrs-William Eckerle, Ling Peng and Jasn Mser-hired mre than 200 participants t test hw pen mnitring meditatin affected hw peple detect and respnd t errrs.
The participants, wh had never meditated befre, were taken thrugh a 20-minute pen mnitring meditatin exercise while the researchers measured brain activity thrugh electrencephalgraphy (脑电图), r EEG. Then, they cmpleted a cmputerized distractin(分心)test.
"The EEG can measure brain activity at the millisecnd level, s we gt precise measures f brain activity right after mistakes cmpared t crrect respnses," Lin said. "A certain neural signal ccurs abut half a secnd after an errr called the errr psitivity, which is linked t cnscius errr recgnitin. We fund that the strength f this signal is increased in the meditatrs relative t cntrls."
"These findings shw what just 20 minutes f pen mnitring meditatin can d t imprve the brain's ability t detect and pay attentin t mistakes," Mser said.
