When I first met George, I was in my early 30s.My children were just entering school life allowing me to escape from endless housework. At 65,George had recently left work and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, we loved painting and we met at a local TAFE painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last for 25 years—until the day he died.
George was an energetic man who lived life to the full. He loved his family, his friends, and was loyal and outspoken. As the only male in a painting class full of women, George quite enjoyed it. He ruled the roost(栖息处)and we were his hens. He loved his singular(单一的)role and looked after his hens with the same attention he gave to everything.
He took to painting with passion and devotion. He carefully housed his expensive painting tools in a box—a red metal tool box—built to bear hard knocks. Not fancy, but smooth and shiny and very red.
In 2004,I learned that he was very ill and went to visit him. "He's very confused and may not recognize you," Penny, his daughter, warned. But as I bent over, George opened his eyes. "Betty!" he said, and with surprising strength, held my hand. "I've always been hoping to leave my box to you. I'm afraid I can't paint anymore, and you have the best talent and are most likely to use it," he said. With tears in my eyes, I accepted the gift on the proviso(附带条件)he could take it back at any time. He never did. He died two days later.
Today I still use much of his equipment kept in the box.The box is still in good shape, very red. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price has worn off. But that's all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price.
24 Why did George go to painting class?
A. He wanted to please his children. B. He wanted to enjoy school life again.
C. He wanted to make new friends D. He wanted to develop a worthwhile hobby.
25 What's the author's purpose of writing the text?
A. To introduce a popular hobby .B. To describe a precious friendship.
C. To remember a red tool box. D. To appreciate her friend's help.
26 Which word can describe George according to the text?
A. Honest. B. Brave. C. Caring. D. Lucky.
27 What can we learn from the text?
A. The tool box is well kept by the author.
B. George took the red tool box back in the end.
C. George was shy and didn't talk much in the class.
D. The author thought their painting class was boring.
C
"Iris scan (虹膜扫描),please," the bank's computer voice tells you. You step up and the computer reads your eye, comparing it to the stored file it has of your iris. The images had better match—otherwise you won't be able to get your money.
Iris scanning and other technologies, such as fingerprint and voice scanning, have appeared in many science fiction movies in the past. Today, They are common at work, the bank, the airport, and your local prison. The iris scan, fingerprint scan ,and voice scan are all examples of biometrics (生物测定学),a fast developing area of automatic personal identification technology. Basically, biometrics uses various ways to verify a person's identity, based on the people’s unique characteristics, including fingerprints, voices, irises, body heat patterns, facial images, handprints, signatures and so on.

The words “ protect animals” appear everywhere in books and on screens, because some animals are even in danger of dying out. But sometimes the fact can be a little different from what people read or watch.
About 300 black bears were killed in Florida, the US, in October, 2015. It’s been the first bear hunt in the state since 1994. Local officers explained that the black bear population had grown to 3500 and became a menace to local people. In the past two years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.
Months ago, the Swiss government allowed locals to kill a wolf. This was because the wolf killed 38 sheep, and it was a great loss to some local farmers. Days ago in China, three old men were caught by the police for killing a serow, a kind of protected animal. They said they killed the animal because it ate the plants they grew.
However, these stories don’t always mean that animal protection stops because of human interests especially when it is connected to economic development. A man named Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and about 300 bears. His base also offered jobs to local people.
“ There may never be a standard answer to the question of whether we should give more attention to the environment or human development,” said Robert May, a British expert at Oxford University. “But we shouldn’t push either one to the side, as the future is uncertain.”
32. What can we learn from the second and third paragraphs?
A. 3500 black bears were killed in Florida.
B. The wolf can’t be killed in Switzerland.
C. The serow is protected in China.
D. Three old Chinese men’s loss was made up for .
33. What does the author intend to tell us by mentioning Zhou Weisen’s story?
A. Protecting animals needs great efforts
B. Protecting animals can bring economic development.
C. Zhou was good at feeding wild animals.
D. Zhou had a good relationship with local people.
34. Which of the following statements might Robert May agree with?
A. We should pay more attention to animal protection.
B. Human development should be considered first.
C. It’s difficult to find proper ways to solve environmental problems.
D. We should consider both the environment and human interests.
35. We can infer from the text that__________.
A. animals always do no harm to people
B. last bear hunt in Florida took place more than twenty years ago
C. protecting animals is more important than protecting people’s interest
D. the three old men arrested in China days ago knew that the serow is a protected species.

One morning, Ann's neighbor Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. It was a beautiful dog, which attracted Tracy a lot. Tracy thought the owner of the dog must have been worried about it and looked for it around. She was a warm-hearted woman, so she decided to help the lost dog. In no time, she asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog. Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.
Tracy took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND flyers(传单), and put them in mailboxes. Meanwhile, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, warning her two sons not to fall in love with the dog. At the time, Ann's son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.
Four days later, Ann was still looking after the dog, which they had started to call Riley. They began to love the dog, which was so clever and cute that every member of the family loved it. One day, when Ann arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys' room where Ann found Jack suffering a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him ,the dog went silent.
"If it hadn't come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have died," Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, no one had called to claim the dog, so Ann decided to keep it.
