A village primary school in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province has zero cases of nearsightedness(近视)and overweight for eight years through rope skipping(跳绳).
Qilu Primary School, 23 kilometers away from the town, is home to 210 students, including 130 left-behind children and 15 teachers. Most of the teachers are over 50.
“In countryside areas, many parents don’t realize the need for children and many grandparents look after left-behind children, so students developed some bad habits, including the overuse of mobile phones and electronic products(电子产品). They spend lots of time playing video games instead of learning courses on the mobile phones. Sometimes it took them much time to have long conversations with friends they made on the Internet,” said the school headmaster Liu En.
“Before the school began rope-skipping lessons, some third or fourth-graders had nearsightedness. Others showed low interest in studying and weak sense of working together,” said the headmaster. Besides meeting the students’ needs, the school was also short of sports resources(资源). So Liu finally decided the rope skipping was the best choice.
To get them more interested in the activity, Liu Yan, who is the teacher of the rope skipping lessons, allowed students to come up with their own playing ways. She also decided to name a new rope skipping move after the student who invented it. In order to further improve students’ interest in the activity, Liu Yan allowed students to practice rope skipping as often as possible after class. So far, more than 30 kinds of basic rope skipping ways as well as more than 200 new moves have been accepted by the school.
“I thank the teachers for bringing us rope skipping, which provides me with not only sports skills, but also makes me away from video games and get confidence in life,” said Xiao Ya, a left-behind girl at school.

“Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you? Do you think I am an automaton — a machine without feelings and can stand to have my piece of bread taken away from my lips, and my drop of living water wasted from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, normal, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul(灵魂)as you, and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much money, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the way of tradition, nor even of my body; it is my spirit that communicates with your spirit; when it comes to the end of our lives, when we stood at God’s feet, we are equal(平等的)!”
Sounds similar? These are the most famous and classical sentences in Jane Eyre — an autobiographical(自传的)novel by Charlotte Bronte, who was known as one of “The Bronte Sisters” together with Emily Bronte and Anne Bronte. The novel tells about a p arentless young woman Jane Eyre in the nineteenth-century England.
Though she was raised by her mean and rich relatives before being sent to Lowood, a school with terrible conditions, she grew up to be a poor but confident, small in body but huge in soul, normal but self-respecting girl. More cheerfully, she fina lly got married to Mr. Rochester after going through a lot of ups and downs.
“I am not a bird. I am a free human being with an independent will.” When we think of this girl, what she gives us is not a pretty face, but a strong admiring feeling of her independent soul and strong heart. Jane Eyre shows a woman who dares to resist(反抗) and dares to fight for freedom and equality. That is the true meaning of “timeless beauty”.

51.例文
Dear Mike,
I’m glad to receive your letter. In July, China introduced the “double reduction” policy. It hopes to reduce schoolwork burden on primary and junior high school students. The policy calls for reducing homework and after-school classes. So my life has changed a lot.
Our homework is clearly less than before, and I have enough time to process new knowledge now. I have more chances to do experiments and learn from real life. For example, I go to research earthworms in a field during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books. I can also spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama.
Although we feel less stress than before, self-discipline becomes the key. We should balance the schoolwork and after-school activities. Otherwise, we will fall behind other students. What about your opinion?
Best wishes,
Li Hua
