He was abut 25 punds verweight and had chrnic truble with his back, knees, and shulders. But instead f giving in t age, Owen decided t set an ambitius five-year gal: He wanted t be pain-free, and he decided the way t get there was thrugh exercise-even thugh at the time he culdn't d a single push-up.
Owen began his new exercise regimen(养生计划)by walking, thugh he became ut f breath after five minutes. But that didn't discurage him. He kept at the walks every day, alng with sme stretching. Once he had thse basics dwn, he started weight lifting and hired a persnal trainer t teach him and t design a rutine he culd fllw n his wn. The last piece was finding ther activities lie enjyed, which turned ut t be cycling and swimming.
In less than five years, Owen was able t d three sets f 50 push-ups each and walk fr miles each day. And yes, he was free f aches and pains.
Owen used his experience t write a bk called Just Mvel A New Apprach t Fitness After 50, in which he details hw lder adults can safely get ff the cuch and add mre mvement t their lives. The key: getting started, even if yu walk just three blcks, which was all he culd manage at first. "Think f it as mvement, nt exercise," he says. "The key is slw and steady prgress."

By the age f seven mnths, mst children have learned that bjects still exist even when they are ut f sight. But it is smething that self-driving cars d nt have. And that is a prblem. Fr a self-driving car, a bicycle that is mmentarily hidden by a passing truck is a bicycle that has disappeared. Hw t give AI the reasning ability fr a seven-mnth-ld child is nw a matter f active research.
Mdern AI is based n the idea f machine learning. If an engineer wants a cmputer t recgnize a stp sign, he des nt try t write thusands f lines f cde that describe every pattern f pixels(像素)which culd pssibly indicate such a sign. Instead, he writes a prgram that can learn fr itself, and then shws that prgram thusands f pictures f stp signs. Over many repetitins, the prgram gradually wrks ut what features all f these pictures have in cmmn.
Similar techniques are used t train self-driving cars t perate in traffic. But they d nt understand many things a human driver takes fr granted. In a recent paper in Artificial Intelligence, Mehul Bhatt f Orebr University in Sweden, describes a different apprach. He and his clleagues tk sme existing AI prgrams which are used by self-driving cars and blted nt them a piece f sftware. In tests, if ne car mmentarily blcked the sight f anther, the reasning-enhanced sftware culd keep track f the blcked car, predict where and when it wuld reappear, and take steps t avid it if necessary. The imprvement was nt huge. On standard tests Dr Bhatt's system scred abut 5% better than existing sftware.
Hwever, the questin ges beynd self-driving cars t the future f AI itself. "I dn't think we're taking the right apprach right nw," Dr Marcus, wh studies psychlgy and neural science at New Yrk University, says. "It's nt actually the answer t AI. We haven't really slved the intelligence prblem." One way r anther, then, it seems seven-mnth-lds still have a lt t teach machines.
24. Why des the authr mentin seven-mnth-ld children in the first paragraph?
A. T explain a rule. B. T prve a thery. C. T make a predictin. D. T lead t a tpic.
25. Hw des the authr explain "machine learning" in paragraph 2?
A. By using data. B. By listing facts. C. By intrducing a cncept. D. By giving an example.
26. What d we knw abut Dr Bhatt's system?
A. It imprves self-driving cars greatly.
B. It makes self-driving cars safer than befre.
C. It has the intelligence f a seven-mnth-ld child.
D. It uses the same methd as previus machine learning.
27. What is Dr Marcus's attitude t the present situatin f AI?
A. Dissatisfied. B. Favrable. C. Uninterested. D. Unclear.

Dgs can smell things at cncentratins f ne part in a trillin-equal t a single drp in a pnd the size f 20 Olympic swimming pls. That ability is put t gd use by human beings. Trained dgs can sniff ut explsives and drugs, even tracking missing peple. They can als detect(发现)illnesses, including cancer, malaria, Parkinsn's disease and COVID-19, befre bvius symptms appear. A study published in 2019, fr example, suggested that trained dgs were able, 97% f the time, t identify bld samples taken frm patients with lung cancer.
Training dgs, hwever, takes time. Trainers must be paid. The animals themselves get tired and bred. Dgs are nt, then, a practical answer t the questin f hw t detect illness quickly. But fruit flies might be. Unlike dgs, they are cheap and dispsable-and their senses are just as gd. Alng with technlgy tailred t their talents, they culd prvide ecnmical and easy ways f detecting cancer, and als ffer an alternative t labratry tests fr COVID that might be welcme in cuntries with limited budgets.
Givanni Galizia is ne leading researcher f the University f Knstanz, in Germany. Fruit flies smell things using their feelers, and Dr Galizia has genetically mdified(改变)his flies. When the flies get the smell f the cells with illness, a change in their brain activity can be seen under a micrscpe. With the help f machine learning, Dr Galizia can recgnize the patterns t detect illness.
Whether this idea will cme t fruitin remains t be seen. Medical regulatrs will have t be cnvinced that what may seem wacky at first glance is actually practical. But dctrs have been encuraged t use animals' nses t assist diagnsis(诊断)since ancient times. Having a little assistance frm fruit flies might be n bad thing.
28. What d dgs and fruit flies have in cmmn?
A. They d nt cst mney. B. They can detect drugs.
C. They have equally gd senses. D. They ffer practical ways t detect illness quickly.
29. What des the underlined wrd "wacky" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Strange. B. Interesting. C. Amazing. D. Harmful.
30. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?

C. Human Beings' Great Helpers D. A New Apprach t Detecting Illness
