Wang Mengmeng uses volunteers at the Expo 2010 Shanghai as the subject for her third book on the work of volunteers in China. The 27-year-old writer, herself a volunteer, has decided that the last three books will be about those who contribute their time to the Expo. She said she would try to reflect what Expo volunteers had done to boost the image and statue of this world event. "I am deeply moved by what they have done for the event and I have a strong desire to document their work and achievements," she said. The young writer said she was currently preparing to research the subject and interview Expo volunteers. Wang presented copies of her latest book, Mijiu, to more than 50 Expo volunteers at the Shanghai Book Fair.

She then volunteered to work at the Natural Protection Zone in Yancheng, Jiangsu province. These volunteer experiences helped her complete the first two books on the work of volunteers.
Her first book describes the happiness and hardships teachers faced when they worked in the poverty-stricken mountainous areas. The second tells a story about two generations of Chinese and foreigners protecting the environment and wildlife in China. She suffered a lot when living and working with locals as a volunteer. But all this provided abundant material for her novels, she said. "Being a volunteer helps me learn a lot from the people. It helps me mature," Wang said.

A project in Kenya is using biogas(沼气)technology to attack two major pollution problems with one device: a machine that changes waste such as invasive water hyacinth(入侵性水葫芦)into cleaner cooking fuel.
The project from Biogas International, a Kenyan energy technology company, has so far provided 50 of the Flexi Biogas devices to homes in the city of Kisumu in western Kenya. The main device is called a digester(浸煮器)because it breaks down plant waste to produce gas. The digesters will permit families to stop using wood or coal, both of which produce dangerous smoke. People will also be able to cook foods faster using the gas. Tony Otieno used the gas from a digester to cook tea for his 70-year old grandmother Margaret. He said, "The gas has no smoke, does not smell, and it is much faster than the jiko(a stove that uses woodcoal).”
Some of the families received a gas stove as part of the project, to replace their jiko. The machines process plant waste such as water hyacinth. That plant has covered large parts of Lake Victoria. The weed-like plant harms living things in the lake including fish. The plant also helps bacteria and mosquitoes increase, causing health risks to local communities.
Dominic Wanjihia Kahumbu is head of Biogas International. He said that at a cost of $650, most families in the city do not have enough money to buy the device. Although the technology can be on a small or large scale, he said, each system costs a lot to make. As a result, it is unlikely that the company will make a profit for at least another five years. He said the company needs new investment.
Two larger versions of the equipment are still in the testing stage. They would produce clean fuel on an larger scale for restaurants, chicken farms and fish drying facilities in the area.
    28. What do the two major pollution problems refer to?
    A. Bacteria and mosquitoes. B. Plant waste and fuel pollution.
    C. Biogas and water hyacinth. D. Jiko and dangerous smoke.
    29. Which of the following can best describe the device?
    A. Large. B. Cheap. C. Environment-friendly. D. Nice-looking.
    30. What can we know about the water hyacinth from the text?
    A. It helps fish increase. B. It's a threat to the local people.
    C. It has covered Kenya. D. It leads to the invention of digester.
    31. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the device?
    A. Its kinds. B. Its future. C. Its disadvantages. D. Its function.
    D
The human brain has remained largely unchanged since it evolved. Long ago, humans had to focus on the task at hand. Yet today, our brains face a constant stream of digital information that, many scientists think, could have worrisome effects.
In October 2020, scientists published a study that supports the concern. The scientists studied media multitasking, which means people use multiple forms of digital or screen-based media at the same time. The study found that this type of multitasking may impair the ability to concentrate in young adults. This makes them unable to later recall specific situations or experiences.
For the study, scientists recruited 80 young adults aged 18 to 26. The participants were first presented with images of objects on a computer screen and asked to classify the pleasantness or the size of each one. After a 10-minute break, the subjects were then shown additional objects and asked whether the subjects were already classified or new.
During this process, the scientists measured participants' brain activity and eye movement. This data let scientists track if the young adults were paying attention while being asked to remember the images. Then, the findings were compared to the results of a questionnaire the participants filled out before the study that asked questions about everyday attention, mind wandering and media multitasking.
The participants who reported more media multitasking had more absence of mind during the test. The pupils(瞳孔)of their eyes were also smaller, which is a known marker of reduced attention. They also had reduced brain-signal patterns known to be associated with episodic memory—the recall of particular events.
Previous work had shown a connection between media multitasking and poorer episodic memory. The new findings offer clues as to why this might be the case.
"Individuals who are heavier media multitaskers may show worse memory because they have lower sustained attention ability," says Kevin Madore, the paper's lead author.
Madore says the new study stresses the need to be mindful of how we engage with media. "I think our data point to the importance of being consciously aware of attentiveness," he says.
    32. What do scientists say about media multitasking?
    A. It may cause memory damage. B. It's common among teenagers.
    C. It enables individuals to better concentrate. D. It improves the ability to process information.
    33. What does the underlined word "impair" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Demonstrate. B. Maintain. C. Draw. D. Weaken.
    34. What can be learnt from the study?
    A. Participants' attention was closely monitored. B. Filling out questionnaires isn't a must in the research.
    C. Participants were asked to classify objects twice. D. Participants' pupils expanded during the study.
    35. What does the study lay stress on?
    A. The importance of media awareness. B. The need to stay away from media.
    C. The need to treat media properly. D. The importance of developing media.

Thoa named the cute cat, Rosie. Thoa was ready and willing to do whatever to save this small animal. The poor kitty was abandoned from her mother at such a young age, and Thoa was getting nervous that Rosie wouldn't make it another night without eating properly. So, if Thoa herself couldn't help Rosie feel safe enough, perhaps another animal could help. As soon as Thoa brought in her cherished pet, Lilo the husky(哈士奇), into the room, everything changed for Rosie.
Together, the two instantly shared a special bond. Lilo lay down with Rosie, and as the minutes went by, it was clear that Rosie felt even more secure and out of harm's way. Lilo was never a mother. But it seems like her maternal instincts(母性)are incredibly strong! Lilo never left Rosie's side for hours. Once Rosie finally felt safe from Lilo's welcoming warmth and comfort, she started crying for food, and the little kitty tried sucking on Lilo to get some milk, as if she was Rosie's mother.
“She knew that Rosie needed her. She accompanied her until she was better," Thoa said, “It looks like both filled up a missing spot in each other's heart." Rosie felt secure with Lilo, and it was clear that Lilo felt the same with Rosie. Lilo laid by Rosie's side for hours, and didn't even get up to eat that night! W: David, I'm afraid I won't be able to meet with you this evening. I have to take my car to the shop.
M: That's too bad. Tomorrow I'm visiting an important customer in the afternoon, but I'm free in the morning. Does that work for you?
    W: Sure, that's fine.

W: I just watched a new film. It was pretty exciting. I love the director. He is great.
    M: Anything else?
W: The acting was good, too. Especially that little kid, he's such a good actor. But the story didn't seem believable in the rest of the film. I found it really disappointing.
    M: Would you recommend it?
W: Sure, but it's not the best film around at the moment.
    听下面一段对话,回答第8和第9小题。现在,你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。

W: Well, what about this two-bedroom apartment? The listing says it's right in the downtown, just steps from the underground station.
M: Wow, that would be very convenient.
W: Yes. There are lots of popular restaurants and coffee shops around there.
M: How much is the rent?
W: $1,800 per month. But you can share it with another person, and then that's only $900.
M: That sounds like a good idea.
    听下面一段对话,回答第10至第12小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
    (Text 8)
M: Hey, Mary! Have you got any plans for the summer vacation?
W: I've got a job as a volunteer. I'm going to work on a project to build a school in Kenya in Africa. I'm going there as soon as the term finishes and I'll be there for two months. I'm hoping to do a little traveling after I finish the project but I'm not sure yet. What about you?
M: Well, my parents have offered to pay for me to do a summer course in cooking.
    W: That sounds interesting.
M: The thing is, I don't want them to think I can't organize anything myself.
W: What would you like to do?
M: I'd like a part-time job related to tourism or restaurants. I've applied for a few and I've got two interviews so far. I'd love to get a job of managing a restaurant. I intend to apply for a few jobs this weekend.
W: Would you like a job here in Spain?
    M: Oh, here, of course.
    听下面一段对话,回答第13至第16小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
    (Text 9)
W: Good evening! Our "Person of the Week" is Kevin Olsen. And we' re glad to have Kevin here with us this evening. Kevin lives and works on the coast of Washington. His job is unusual in some ways. Part of his work is to rescue whales, fish, and sea birds when they get into trouble with pollution. Welcome to the program, Kevin.
    M: Glad to be here.
W: What do you do in your job?
M: I spend a lot of my time with sea animals, trying to learn what things they need in the environment. If we know what they need, we can help them survive in the future.
W: Can you tell us something about the disaster a short time ago?
M: The whales, small fish, and birds all suffered in that disaster. The birds had oil on their wings, so they couldn't fly. And they couldn't eat the fish because the fish were covered with oil. It took a long time for many people to work on the cleanup.
W: Why did you choose this job? Is it because you were concerned about sea animals?
M: Yes, I was always interested in the world of the ocean and how the plants and animals fit together in their system.
W: Thank you, Kevin, for coming and talking to us this evening.
    M: My pleasure.
    听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
    (Text 10)
W: Helen Perry, one of the greatest actresses of all time, was born in 1847. Her acting life didn't actually have a good start because acting was not a suitable job for a young woman at that time. When she was 22, she went on stage. But she found she had other problems. Although her first role was very small, she had great trouble learning the dialogue lines, and, according to her, this was difficult throughout her acting life. However, this didn't prevent her becoming a successful actress. People said the thing that made her so special was her voice. Unfortunately, her voice got lower and lower when she was in her fifties, which nearly brought her acting life to an end, She finally had a throat operation, which was very important for her and made her go on acting for another 25 years after that. Helen Perry is famous for several famous plays. But few people know her talent in writing. We have the letters she exchanged with a writer and they show she had great writing style. She also had quite a few degrees. But she said what really pleased her was that the audience loved her.

    Dear Jack,
Knowing that you are a bit at a loss and feel stressed for your senior high school life, I hope I can offer some tips.
First, you should balance your study and life. Second, although we should make good use of every minute, we need also take time to relax. Third, don`t stay up otherwise it may make us sleepy in the daytime. And pay great attention to diets. Personally, I believe high-quality protein is beneficial to your study. Last but not least, turn to your teachers for help if you have trouble.
I truly hope my advice is helpful and you can get well soon.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    第二节
    One possible version
One day, Thoa took Lilo out, leaving Rosie at home. Just like any other house cat, Rosie must prefer staying at home, Thoa thought. However, several weeks after coming back home, Thoa noticed that the ever abandoned little kitty, which had just gained warmth and love in her eyes, seemed obviously sad once again. It is said that separating a baby animal from its owner or mother is even crueler than you leave it alone on the street. So is the case with Rosie. Then Thoa thought of a creative but crazy idea.
She decided to take out along with the two, Lilo and Rosie! In spite of the fact that people definitely considered them crazy and ridiculous, Thoa still made up her mind to do that. She said “basically whatever I do with Lilo, I bring Rosie along." They weren't just best friends. Actually, Rosie looked up to Lilo and started learning how to live her best with Lilo. With time going by, the ever poor fragile kitten gradually came to life, becoming fearless and strong.
