It was New Year time, but I wasn’t looking forward to it. That winter, my mother and my stepfather moved our family to Southern California. My brother and I were leaving our rural Alabama behind. This would be our first New Year away from Alabama. My mother went to California like a swan to a royal lake. My athletic little brother, Paul, was keyed up at a climate that allowed him to go to the beach whenever he wanted.
I, however, was a fat child with heavy southern pronunciation. My first day in the new class, I introduced myself in a low voice. The moment I opened my mouth to speak, the whole class burst into laughter, “He talks funny.” It was so frustrating that I went to place a call to Granny Smith after school, who was my biggest support. But I didn’t get through.
On Sunday evening, the phone rang. It was Granny. She often took advantage of the discounted long-distance rates on Sundays. She said she’d shipped a New Year package. Sure enough, it arrived. Surprised at the box, large enough to hold a small refrigerator, we eagerly tore it open. The smell of Granny’s house filled the room: a combination of fried meat, sausages, furniture polish and decorations. Her house was tiny and always filled with tacky holiday decorations and homemade food before New Year. But in my childhood eyes, it was precious and fantastic.
There were countless tins and containers. We open them to discover piles of holiday treats. She even included our traditional candy bats. The box was as bottomless as a magical box. There, beneath all these, was familiar holiday.
Every New Year that we spent in California, the postal service would call and say our package was arrived. Over the years, many treasures arrived in the box. For me, it’s always been the best part of the holiday.
    24. How did the author’s brother feel when they were moving to California?
    A. Indifferent. B. Joyful. C. Appreciative. D. Disappointed.
    25. Why did the author’s classmates laugh at him?
    A. He spoke in a low voice. B. He made a humorous talk.
    C. He looked overweight. D. He had a strong accent.
    26. What does the underlined word “tacky” probably mean?
    A. Suitable. B. Expensive. C. Cheap. D. Attractive.
    27. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
    A. Granny’s Care Package B. An Unforgettable Holiday
    C. Our Move to California D. A Telephone Call from Granny

China's Yungang Grottoes(石窟) will complete the scanning of all the caves in five years, paving the way for the creation of digital versions that can withstand weathering and other real-world damage.
So far, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Shanxi Province has completed three-dimensional scans of one-third of its Buddhist grottoes, according to the Yungang Grottoes Research Institute.“We are racing against time,”said Ning Bo, director of the institute’s digitalization office, “Weathering is like cancer to grottoes, eating away at the sculptures year by year. Few technologies can prevent such progressive damage.”
Using three-dimensional laser(激光) scanning and multiplanar(多平面) reconstruction, the institute is working to capture the shapes, colors and other fine details of the grottoes and create millimeter-level digital archives for future study and preservation. “We hope to preserve the grottoes in digital form as much as possible, so people in the future will still have access to the information even if the grottoes fade away.” Ning said, adding that the digitalization will also allow the public to “visit” the grottoes more easily on their computer screens.
The digitalization project, which began in 2003 at the grottoes, still faces challenges posed by the cave’s enormous sizes, complicated structures and exquisite sculptures, according to the institute. “The Yungang Grottoes were built into a mountain, and so our team is actually scanning structures as huge as a mountain. Besides, the inner structures vary wildly from exotic domes to traditional Chinese architecture.” said the director.
The Yungang Grottoes, located in the city of Datong, has 45 major caves and more than 59,000 stone statues. With a grotto complex stretching about 1 kilometer from east to west, it is one of the largest ancient grottoes in the country.
    28. What does Ning Bo mean by saying “racing against time”?
    A. He is dying because of a severe disease.
    B. It is not an easy job to scan the grottoes.
    C. Scanning the grottoes is an urgent task.
    D. There is a deadline required by UNESCO.
    29. Why is the Yungang Grottoes being scanned?
    A. To capture details of the grottoes.
    B. To carry out a scientific experiment.
    C. To keep them from being damaged.
    D. To preserve them for future generations.
    30. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A. The influence of the project. B. The beauty of the grottoes.
    C. The difficulties facing the team. D. The structures of the statues.
    31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
    A. Education. B. Culture. C. Technology. D. Opinion.

    D
It is believed that human story begins in Africa and ends about 200,000 years later with their seven billion descendants (后代) spread across the Earth, living in peace or at war, their faces lit by campfires and computer screens.
In between is an exciting tale of survival, movement, isolation, and conquest, most of it occurring before recorded history. Who were those first modern people in Africa? What routes did they take when they left their home continent 60,000 years ago to expand into Europe and Asia? When and how did humans reach the Americas? For decades, the only proof was found in a small number of scattered bones and artifacts(文物) that our ancestors left behind on their journeys. In the past 20 years, however, DNA technologies have allowed scientists to find a record of ancient human migrations in the DNA of living people.
“Every drop of human blood contains a history book written in the language of our genes,” says population geneticist Spencer Wells. The human genetic code, or genome(基因组) , is 99.9 percent identical throughout the world. But while the bulk of our DNA is the same, what’s left is responsible for our individual differences — in eye color or disease risk, for example. On very rare occasions, a small change, called a mutation, can occur, which is then passed down to all of that person’s descendants. Generations later, finding that same mutation in two people's DNA indicates that they share the same ancestor. By comparing mutations in many different populations, scientists can trace their ancestral connections.
These ancient mutations are easiest to track in two places: in DNA that is passed from mother to child (called mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA for short), and in DNA that travels from father to son (known as the Y chromosome, the part of DNA that determines a child will be a boy). By comparing the mtDNA and Y chromosomes (染色体) of people from various populations, geneticists can get a rough idea of where and when those groups separated in the great migrations around the planet.
    32. Which one from the following can best summarize this passage?
A.Exploring human history B.Finding DNA differences
C.Making a biology experiment D.Discovering ancestry in DNA
33.What can we infer from the quote of Spencer Wells in Paragraph 3?
A.Every drop of blood contains enough DNA information to fill many history books.
B.A drop of blood contains genetic information that can tell a person’s ancestral history.
C.Although people speak different languages, all human blood contains the same language.
D.The organization of information in a history book is similar to the that of DNA within a gene.
34.What does the underlined word “bulk” in Paragraph 3 most probably refer to?
A.the large size B.the main part
C.the number D.the weight or shape
35.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the reading?
A.Human DNA remains the same as what is passed down from their ancestors.
B.Comparing mtDNA and Y chromosomes can help identify human migrations.
C.The earliest people are said to originate from Africa and spread across the world.
D.Scientists have found ways to determine whether people share the same ancestor.

What springs to mind when you think of kung fu, also known as wushu? Maybe the image of Shaolin monks striking fierce poses with a serious look in his eyes, or popular children's movies like Kung Fu Panda. 36
Recently, Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, explored this question in Searching of Kung Fu. Brahm himself is a kung fu lover who has been devoted to the practice for more than 40 years. For him, pursuing this craft was more than a pastime. Around a decade ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for about two years and had to walk with crutches and a cane. 37 Now kung fu has become a daily routine for him.
“Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our neural system, connect our blood flow. 38 Martial arts is moving meditation.” Brahm said.
39 “Chinese kung fu is full of Chinese philosophies and core values,”Hong Kong actor Bruce Leung told Xinhua. Nonviolence is one of these values, which is shown both in the name and the practice. Wu, consists of two characters- ge,meaning“dragger-ax" (匕首) and zhi, meaning “to stop” 40 . Kung fu artists always salute with baoquan. This lets each person know that there are no hidden weapons and shows trust.
Brahm’s appreciation of kung fu is clear. He sees it as “a mirror of Chinese culture”.
    A. Brahm's appreciation of kung fu is obvious.
    B. Chinese kung fu is a mirror of Chinese culture.
    C. Still others find additional values in the practice.
    D. But do they really reveal the meaning of kung fu?
    E. But by practicing martial arts slowly, he was able to recover step by step.
    F. Besides, it can also connect us into our environment to increase our awareness.
    G. So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting, the art of nonviolence.

    第二节 读后续写 (满分 15 分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a kid, I came across a basic series of questions every time I was introduced to a person. Most were easy: “How old are you?” “What grade are you in?” “What do you want to be when you grow up?” But there was one question that troubled me: “What do your parents do?”
Dad was a computer programmer, so that one was easy enough. “My dad works on computers,” I would say. But mom’s job was hard to explain. She called herself a “nurse practitioner(从业者)”. Mom explained it easier to make me understand. “You can say I teach nursing,” she said. “My mom teaches nurses,” I would repeat what she had said to me.
When that answer led to even more questions, my response became simpler, “My mom is a nurse,” though I was finally left wondering what it was she actually did. It definitely demanded a lot of time and energy and was important to the injured. I got my first clue(线索) about what mom actually did when having a late-night trip with her to the hospital in Central Phoenix.
Mom was called in to make rounds unexpectedly that night. It was dark outside and almost time for me to go to bed, so I was shocked when she asked if I wanted to come along with her. I loved the way the light from the streetlamps passed through the car. Being amazed at the view from the front seat, I didn’t say much. Some soft music was played on the radio in the car, which made me feel relaxed. When we arrived at the hospital, mom guided me through the parking garage and led me to a small emergency waiting room. There was only a row of white chairs along each wall and a TV which weighed roughly three hundred pounds.
    注意:
    续写词数应为150词左右;
    请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
My mom handed me a bag of chocolate and left the emergency room to make her rounds.

    Paragraph 2:
On the drive home, I asked mom if she had seen a man whose arms were injured badly.
