Prfessr Heinz Wlff, wh has died aged 89, was a biengineering pineer. He established the discipline, named it and, in a 60-year career, made significant cntributins t medical research. But t the British public, he was best knwn as the “dtty scientist” wh frnted The Great Egg Race, a BBC shw in which clur-cded teams were set engineering challenges (the first was t transprt an egg in a vehicle pwered by rubber bands). With his trademark bw tie, half-mn glasses and Mittel-Eurpean accent, he lked really like Prfessr Branestawn, as described by W. Heath Rbinsn. Yet while he cheerfully explited his reputatin as an “dd egghead”, he was very serius abut his wrk and inspired thusands f yung peple t cnsider scientific careers.

He went n t study at University Cllege Lndn and graduated with a first in physics and physilgy. Then, in 1983, he funded the Institute fr Biengineering at Brunel University. His particular interest was in technlgies t imprve the lives f lder peple, but he was als heavily invlved in space research and wrked as an adviser t the Eurpean Space Agency.
Wlff had made his first appearance n TV n Panrama in 1966, encuraging Richard Dimbleby t swallw a “radi pill”. On The Great Egg Race, which ran frm 1979, his task was t get ppnent teams representing rganizatins such as the chemical cmpany ICI. Challenges included building a hvercraft(气垫船) frm a lawnmwer(割草机), and inventing a bicycle that culd ride n water. Marks were awarded fr entertainment value and technical accmplishment. The shw ended in the mid-l980s, but Wlff cntinued t judge scientific cmpetitins, n TV and elsewhere. A natural entertainer with an inexhaustible curisity abut the wrld, he said he’d be happy t dress up as a clwn if it gt children interested in science.

America has lng been ppsing adequate pverty plicies because f its strng wrry f thinking that the pr are respnsible fr their wn situatins, but a child pverty is t harmful and punishing t ignre. I, and a grwing number f schlars, believe there is a slutin: the gvernment shuld give mnthly cash allwances(津贴), withut cnditins, t every family with kids. (Higher-incme families wuld have much f the mney taxed away.)
A muntain f evidence nw shws that pverty can lead t cgnitive(认知的) and emtinal damage in children. Despite plicies that have expanded access t insurance, pr kids are still less healthy than the rest f the yung ppulatin. They als drp ut f schl at higher rates, earn less mney ver time and are incarcerated(监禁) far mre ften than their better-ff peers. That shuld be enugh fr us t recgnize the mral tragedy that is child pverty, but we shuld nte the brad effect t: reliable analyses shw that the natin’s GDP is up t $1 trillin lwer because f child pverty.
Pr children have many needs, but research shws that mney may matter mst. Fr example, a 2013 review f dzens f studies by Lndn Schl f Ecnmics researchers fund that “Prer children have wrse cgnitive, scial-behaviral and health utcmes in part because they are prer, and nt just because pverty is related t ther husehld and parental characteristics”.
It can als help reduce family stress and help parents prvide a psychlgically raising envirnment in which learning and scial develpment can breed.
The histrian Michael Katz crrectly ntes, “One f the dd aspects f the histry f writing abut pverty is the avidance f the simple view that peple are pr because they lack mney,” yet bth the left and the right defamed(诽谤) direct cash aid as a waste and a cause f laziness and abuse. It is gd that Demcratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang has stressed the benefits f a universal basic incme, quting studies that shw such cash allwances d nt cause the avidance f wrk, but his plan culd cst $2.8 trillin a year and the pr wuld have t return welfare assistance like fd stamps t receive the mney. Fr far less mney—abut $100 billin—the number f children living in fficial pverty culd be cut in half. Such a plicy wuld be a humane(人道的), practical, efficient victry fr a natin t willing t neglect its pr.
28. Accrding t the authr, what is the best apprach t declare war n pverty?
A. Big tax reductin. B. Uncnditinal cash aid.
C. Reemplyment prject. D. Shifting attitude amng peple.
29. Why is child pverty described as a “mral tragedy” in paragraph 2?
A. There is a causal impact f childhd pverty n a cuntry’s GDP perfrmance.
B. It frces a burden n the family and prevents a psitive family envirnment.
C. Children brught up in pverty are likely t suffer frm disrders in brain.
D. Mst pr children achieve less and exhibit mre prblem behavirs later.
30. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
A. Andrew Yang is highly thught f fr the $2.8 billin plan fr the pr.
B. Much imprtance has been placed n child pverty acrss the America.
C. Pliticians are afraid that gvernment relief will decrease labr mtivatin.
D. The traditinal wisdm hlds peple have themselves t blame fr pverty.
31. What is the passage mainly abut?
A. The histrical suffering f the pr.
B. Push fr the pr t save themselves.
C. An appeal fr child pverty apprach.
D. A psitive new deal t help pr children.

Fr smething that weighs nly abut three punds, the human brain has a lt f respnsibility. Deep within all thse gray flds and creases(褶皱) are the cntrls fr everything yu d.
Mre than a century ag, scientists first mapped the brain as they wrked t develp an understanding f each particular regin. Early n, the maps were simple: Which part f the brain cntrlled speech? Which cntrlled hearing? Having a detailed, accurate guide ensures that studies are using the same pints f reference and makes fr mre efficient, accurate investigatins.
Nw, hwever, things are much mre intricate. Researchers have just released an incredible new map f the brain, revealing nearly 100 new areas that were previusly undiscvered r frgtten. Many experts are calling this a milestne in neurscience accrding t the New Yrk Times. The new map has been published in the jurnal Nature.
The new map draws n data cllected by the Human Cnnectme Prject, which studied 1,200 peple using high-pwered MRI scanners t understand hw brain circuitry(大脑神经元回路) wrks. Fr the study, the participants’ brains were recrded while they laid in the scanner, while they did varius math prblems and memry tests, and while they listened t stries. Researchers drew bundaries based n where these and previus tests seemed t match. They als lked at anatmical(解剖的) differences, measuring, fr example, the amunt f myelin(髓磷脂)— a fatty substance that surrunds sme neurns— in different areas f the brain.
“We have 112 different types f infrmatin we can tap int,” study c-authr David Van Essen f Washingtn University Medical Schl tld the New Yrk Times.
With all thse variables(变量) in hand, researchers eventually created a map that included 83 already familiar areas f the brain, plus an additinal 97 regins that were either previusly undiscvered, r smehw frgtten and lst in scientific literature alng the way. Sme previusly knwn regins are hw brken dwn int sub-regins with separate respnsibilities. Fr example, the drslateral prefrntal crtex is a large area tward the frnt f the brain that’s active during thught. The new map shws that it’s made up f many smaller areas that can be key fr different kinds f thught, ranging frm making decisins t lying.
While experts are praising the new map, it’s far frm cmplete, say the researchers wh created it.
“We’re thinking f this as versin 1.0”, says lead authr Matthew Glasser, a neurscientist at Washingtn University Schl f Medicine. “That desn’t mean it’s the final versin, but it’s a far better map than the nes we’ve had befre.”
32. In the third paragraph, what des the wrd “intricate” mean?
A. amazing B. tricky C. cmplicated D. difficult
33. What’s the researchers’ attitude t new map f the brain?
A. They think it is the best versin.
B. They think it is still incmplete.
C. They dn’t like the new map f the brain.
D. They think it is a milestne in neurscience.
34. Which f the fllwing statements is TRUE accrding t the passage?
A. The new map included 97 unfamiliar areas f the brain.
B. The new map used previus data t study the brain circuitry.
C. Participants1 brains were mnitred when they were telling stries.
D. The drslateral prefrntal crtex is a small area which is crucial fr thinking.
35. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. The respnsibility f the brain circuitry.
B. Mixed pinins n the new map f the brain.
C. A study n an incredible new map f the brain.
D. The understanding f the familiar areas f the brain.
