This year’s Olympic Games have been clsed t mst spectatrs (观众) because f COVID-19, but the eyes f the wrld are still n the athletes thanks t five extra cameras—the first step in a 3D tracking system that supplies spectatrs with instant insights int each step f a race.
The tracking system being used in Tky, an Intel prduct called 3DAT, feeds live ftage (影像) int the clud. There, an artificial intelligence prgram uses deep learning t analyze an athlete’s mvements and identifies key perfrmance characteristics such as tp speed and slwdwn. The system shares that infrmatin with viewers by displaying the actin f slw-mtin, highlighting key mments. The whle prcess, frm capturing the ftage t bradcasting the analysis, takes less than 30 secnds.
“It’s like having yur wn persnal cmmentatr pint things ut t yu in the race,” says Jnathan Lee, directr f the Olympic technlgy grup.
T train their Olympic AI via machine learning, Lee and his team had t capture as much ftage f best athletes as they culd. They needed recrdings f human bdies perfrming specific mves, but the preexisting ftage shws average peple in mtin, Lee says. “Peple aren’t usually seven feet in the air,” he ntes, but wrld-class high jumpers reach such heights regularly.
In the ftage, a team at Intel recrd every part f the bdy—eyes, nse, shulders, and mre. Once thse key pints were identified, the mdel began cnnecting them in three dimensins (维度) until it had a simplified perfrmance f an athlete’s frm. Lee thinks the AI culd help everyne frm Olympians t average gymgers crrect their frm and track changes in their mves that may indicate upcming injury. “Lng-term, what this technlgy will d is help imprve an athlete’s perfrmance by giving them mre infrmatin,” tw-time Olympic champin Ashtn Eatn said.

    C. T recrd mves f average peple.D. T imprve athletes’ specific mves.
    30. What can the system d fr average sprts enthusiasts?
    A. Lwer the risk f injury.B. Train them t be Olympians.
    C. Simplify the training prcess.D. Track changes in their heights.

    A. He benefited a lt frm the technlgy.
    B. He was psitive abut the future f AI.
    C. He thught AI was useless fr athletes.

“We need t shamp the patient s hair,” said Kristen, a physician assistant. Operating rm nurse Jess secnded the idea. With the tw f them advcating, it needed t happen.
Smehw fr the last 23 years, as a man with shrt hair, I’d always cnsidered a wash with water t be enugh t clean a patient’s hair after surgery. We wuld wash it the day after. That’s just hw we’d dne things. But why nt wash it in the perating rm befre the patient wakes up? The literature suggests n danger, s I went alng with Kristen and Jess, and bught gd shamp.
The first time we did it, it seemed a little time-wasting. If it was abut surgical cleanliness, it wasn’t required. As we cntinued t wash the patient’s hair, I began t ntice the effect it had n everyne else in the rm. The shamp transfrmed the rm t a spa fr just a few minutes. The patient was the subject f the cleansing, but we benefited t. It was a quiet, cllective feeling, knwing that we were finishing ur wrk well. The sweet smell f washing fixed that in ur minds.
Patients say they dn’t care abut hair, but they d. It can be a symbl f pwer r beauty, as with Samsn r Rapunzel. A cntemprary example, hair in Namwali Serpell’s nvel The Old Drifts serves as a symbl f individual and persnality. Peple definitely care abut their hair.
Washing the hair with nice shamp symblizes the beginning f sme kind f recvery, a return t a new nrmal fr the patient, cleansing away the misfrtune that caused them t need me.
We sent the patient ut f the rm with clean hair, knwing and shwing that we’d cared fr them well. The patient is mre than a case—they’re a fellw human, after all. A pstsurgical shamp seems like a gd talisman (护身符), and it’s nt time-wasting.
    32. What can we learn abut the first hair-washing experience in the perating rm?
    A. The patient was a man with shrt hair.
    B. The idea was first put frward by Jess
    C. The experience was a ttal waste f time.
    D. The authr realized varius benefits afterwards.
    33. What’s the authr’ s purpse in writing paragraph 4?
    A. T explain the pwer f beauty.
    B. T shw what hair means t peple.
    C. T intrduce a classic bk abut hair.
    D. T discuss the effect f hair n persnality.
    34. What will the authr prbably d in the future?
    A. Wash patients’ hair befre surgery.
    B. Stp wasting time n hair-washing.
    C. Cntinue t shamp patients’ hair.
    D. Give patients talismans fr gd luck.
    35. Which f the fllwing best describes the authr as a dctr?
    A. Hnest.B. Ambitius.C. Caring.D. Generus.
