    Unit 3 Welcome to Sunshine Town

    Study skills

    Teaching aims:

    1.   To get the rules of stress in sentences
    2.   To express different purpose through different stresses in the sentences

    Teaching procedures:

    Step 1. lead-in

    ` I `bought a `new `book in the `bookstore `yesterday.

    Look at the sentence and answer some questions:

    1.Who bought a new book yesterday?

    2. What did you do yesterday?

    3. Where did you buy  a new book yesterday?

    4. When did you buy a new book in the bookstore?

    Step 2: Work out the rules

    When we speak English, we often stress important words. These words are usually the content words.(内容词)

    We do not usually stress less important words. These words are usually the structure words.(结构次,虚词)

    My aunt is a teacher in a middle school.

    Mr Lin is going to visit the USA next month.

    However, the words are not equally important. We can stress some of the words to show that they are more important information.

    1. Mr Li owns a four-bedroom flat.

    It’s Mr Li that owns a four-bedroom flat.

    2. Mr Li owns a four-bedroom flat.

    Mr Li doesn’t rent the flat from others.

    3. Mr Li owns a four-bedroom flat.

    It’s a four-bedroom flat,not another kind of that.

    4. Mr Li owns a four-bedroom flat.

    It’s a flat, not a house.

    Step 3. Finish part A

     Listen to the following conversation. Pay attention

    to the stressed words.

    Millie:  Where are you going, Daniel?

    Daniel:  I’m going to the bookshop.

    Millie:  What are you going to buy?

    Daniel:  My pen is broken. I want to buy a new one.

    Millie:   I need some exercise books. Can I go with

                  you?

    Daniel:  Sure.

    Step 4.  Finish part B

    Read the sentences below. Stress the different words according to the meanings you want to express.

    1. I want to buy a CD at the bookshop.

    a I am talking about what I want to do, not what I do not want to do.

     want

    b I am talking about a bookshop, not another kind of shop.

     bookshop

    c I am talking about a CD, not something else.

    CD

    2. Daniel sometimes watches TV on Sunday morning.

    a  I am talking about watching TV, not another activity.

    watch TV

    b  I am talking about Daniel, not another student in the class.

    c  I am talking about Sunday morning, not another morning.

    Step 5Summary: Stress in sentences

    1. When we speak English, we often stress important words, e.g. nouns, main verbs, adjectives and adverbs. We do not usually stress less important words, e.g. articles, prepositions, pronouns or conjunctions.

    2. However, the words are not equally important. We can stress some of the words to show that they are more important information.

    Step 6. Do exercises in class

    1.  Kitty is going to Sunshine Park to have a picnic this Sunday.

    To talk about who is having a picnic.

     

    To talk about where to have a picnic.

     

    To talk about when to have a picnic.

     

    2.   It takes about two hours to watch a Beijing opera in our local theatre.

    To talk about how much time it takes to watch a Beijing opera.      

     

    To talk about what to do in our local theatre.

     

    To talk about where to watch a Beijing opera

     

    Step 7. Homework

    1. Read sentences on Page 39 on the book.

     

    2. Finish the exercises in the workbook.

        It’s only ten minutes’ walk from my home to the town centre.
