    Climate change, wildlife crime, pllutin, and disease have created a shcking speed in the disappearance f species. The Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature (IUCN) has tried t shw in its Red List the prblem f threatened species. Here are sme f the highlights t watch ut fr in 2017:
    The Bramble Cay melmy: This small Australian animal like an rdinary muse was extinct in 2016. It is the first knwn mammal t g extinct as a result f human-caused climate change. Its habitat n the Great Barrier Reef was destryed by the rise f sea levels, and flding-driven by climate change.
    Giraffes: Bad news fr the planet’s tallest land creature was annunced befre the end f 2016: Giraffe ppulatins are decreasing due t paching and habitat lss.
    Rhins: These massive mammals have lng been pached fr their hrns, which are wrngly believed t be a kind f medicine. The western black rhin is already extinct and there are nly three nrthern white rhins left. In 2016, numbers shwed that the previus year was the wrst year ever fr rhin paching.
    Yellw-faced hneybees: Seven species f Hawaii’s yellw-faced bees made it nt the endangered species list last year, but mre than a quarter f the bee ppulatin in the US is als in truble. This has ptentially devastating results fr the planet’s fd supply: Bees are respnsible fr pllinating mre than a third f the wrld’s fd.
    The African elephant: The Endangered Species Calitin reprts that the ppulatin f the largest land animal in the wrld-nce 10 millin strng-has fallen t abut 400, 000. The ppulatin drp results frm ivry paching and lss f habitat. If paching cntinues at its current rate, there will be n African elephants in 20 years.

That’s why AWF scientists are studying elephant behavir, prtecting habitats and finding ways fr humans t live peacefully with elephants in Africa.
    Years ag, verhunting and the ivry trade were the biggest threats t elephants’ survival. Luckily, ivry bans (禁令), hunting rules and prtected areas prtect elephants frm these dangers tday.
    The 21st century brings a different challenge t elephant cnservatin-land-use. Elephants walk acrss brders and utside parks and ther prtected areas. S they ften destry crps, causing cnflicts (冲突) between lcal farmers and these big animals.
    Successful cnservatin strategies (策略) must allw elephants t walk freely in their natural habitats while reducing cnflicts between elephants and lcal peple.
    AWF researchers are searching fr a way t give bth elephants and peple the space they need. The AWF is cllecting infrmatin n elephant habitats and behavir. The infrmatin they gather will help t develp the widest pssible space fr elephants.
    The AWF is helping elephants by prtecting their habitats. And they als wrk with lcal famers t imprve their life in rder t encurage them t prtect rather than destry elephants.
