Jane Austen is loved mainly as a charming guide to fashionable life in the Regency period (英国摄政时期). She is admired for describing a world of elegant houses, dances, servants and fashionable young men driving barouches (四轮四座大马车). But her own vision of her task was completely different. She was an ambitious and strict moralist. She was highly conscious of human failings and she had a deep desire to make people nicer: less selfish, more reasonable and more sensitive to the needs of others.
In Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bonnet start off heartily disliking each other and then, gradually realize they are in love. They make one of the great romantic couples. He is handsome, rich and well connected; she is pretty, smart and lively. But why actually are they right for one another?
Jane Austen is very clear. It’s for a reason we tend not to think of very much today: It is because each can educate and improve the other. When Mr. Darcy arrives in the neighborhood, he feels “superior” to everyone else, because he has more money and higher status. At a key moment, Elizabeth condemns his arrogance (自大) and pride to his face. It sounds offensive in the extreme, but later he admits that this was just what he needed.
Mostly, we tend to think of love as liking someone for who they already are, and of total acceptance. But the person who is right for us, Austen is saying, is not simply someone who makes us feel relaxed or comfortable; they got to be able to help us overcome our failings and become more mature, more honest and kinder — and we need to do something similar for them.
24. What do we know about Jane Austen from Paragraph 1?
A. She lived a fashionable life.
B. She wrote about the life of the rich.
C. She knew exactly human virtues.
D. She was nicer to less selfish people.
25. What can we learn about Mr. Darcy from the text?
A. He dislikes Elizabeth from the beginning to the end.
B. He is handsome, rich and rather modest.
C. He is kind to everyone in the neighborhood.
D. He needs Elizabeth to point out his shortcomings.
26. Which person is right for you according to Jane Austen?
A. A person that you like for who he or she is.
B. A person with whom you feel really relaxed.
C. A person making you become a better man or woman.
D. A person who does something similar to you.
27. What message does the book Pride and Prejudice convey?
A. Improve yourself with your lover’s help.
B. Accept the people you love totally.
C. Earn much money to make people love you.
D. Find your true love with pride and prejudice.

The idea that computers have some amount of “intelligence” is not new, says Ralph Haupter, the president of Microsoft Asia, pointing as far back as 1950 when computer pioneer Alan Turing asked whether machines can think. “So it has taken nearly 70 years for the right combination of factors to come together to move AI from concept to reality,” says Haupter.
It is predicted that the development of artificial intelligence will be the story of the coming generations, not just the coming year, but as 2019 gets underway, you’ll find AI will begin to touch your life in many ways according to some researchers.
“Personal assistant AIs will keep getting smarter. As our personal assistants learn more about our daily routines, I can imagine the day I need not to worry about preparing dinner. My AI knows what I like to eat, which days of the week I like to cook at home, and makes sure that when I get back from work all my groceries are waiting at my doorstep, ready for me to prepare that delicious meal I had been longing for.” — Alejandro Troccoli, senior research scientist, NVIDIA
“Thanks to AI, the face will be the new credit card, the new driver’s license and the new barcode (条形码). Facial recognition is already completely transforming security with biometric capabilities being adopted, and seeing how technology and business are connected, like Amazon is with Whole Foods, I can see a near future where people will no longer need to stand in line at the store.” — Georges Nahon, president, Orange Institute, a global research laboratory
“2019 will be the year AI becomes real for medicine. By the end of the year we’re seeing solutions for population health, hospital operations and a broad set of clinical specialties quickly follow behind. ” — Mark Michalski, executive director, Massachusetts General Hospital
32. What can we know about AI from the first two paragraphs?
A. People didn’t expect AI to develop so rapidly.
B. The idea of AI just came up recently.
C. The concept of AI was put forward by Ralph Haupter.
D. It took more than 70 years to turn the concept into reality.
33. Who sees the future of AI doing housework instead of human being?
A. Alan Turing. B. Georges Nahon.
C. Mark Michalski. D. Alejandro Troccoli.
34. What is Georges Nahon’s job?
A. Executive director of a hospital.
B. President of a research laboratory.
C. Chairman of an energy corporation.
D. Chief operating officer of a newspaper.
35. How is the passage developed?
A. By explaining cause and effect.
B. By presenting research results.
C. By listing some predictions.
D. By describing personal experiences.

My first career had been related to audiology — one that allowed me to work part time while tending my growing family. But when my children grew up and left home, I found myself longing to be outside, not in a soundproof room in the hospital.
So I began attending classes at the local university, hoping that might lead me to a new career. 36 “What gave you pleasure as a child?” the counselor asked. I thought for a while before responding, “Playing outside in the woods.” Our discussion eventually led to a second master’s degree, this one in zoology, and the job as a naturalist at a state park. I was 44 years old. 37
But as I climbed the career ladder, my time in the field disappeared. I was chained to a computer screen. In the back of my mind, the career counselor’s question sounded again. “ 38 ”
Shortly thereafter, an opportunity presented itself: a 4-month field research project at a university in the Netherlands. I found that field research allowed me to play in the woods again, but with a new purpose.
At the end of the project, I was invited to participate in the “sandwich” Ph. D. program, in which students do research in their home country while receiving support and instruction in the Netherlands. I was 60 years old. I didn’t think that earning a Ph. D. would further my career. 39
Still, my colleagues raised their eyebrows. “ 40 ” they asked. “It is all about the journey,” I responded.
A. What gave you pleasure as a child?
B. I also went to see a career counselor.
C. What do you intend to do with a Ph. D.?
D. But I wanted to follow my new passion.
E. But when it was no longer right, I changed direction.

“Living within 300 metres of green space 61 (associate) with greater happiness, sense of worth and life satisfaction,” says a new study. 62 (use) data from UK government’s Annual Population Survey (APS) of 25,518 people, the researchers show that people 63 live within 300 metres of green space have significantly better mental well-being. “A lot of research focuses 64 poor mental health, or single aspect of well-being like life satisfaction. What makes our work different is the way we consider multi-dimensional mental well-being in terms of happiness, life satisfaction and worth,” said Victoria Houlden from the University of Warwick.
The study, 65 (publish) in the journal Applied Geography, found that there is a very strong relationship between the amount of green space around a person’s home 66 their feelings of life satisfaction, happiness, and self-worth. Green space within 300 metres of home made the greatest 67 (differ) to mental well-being. The study found that access to green space was 68 (important) than lifestyle factors such as employment, income and general health. “By 69 (combine) advanced statistical and mapping methods, we’ve shown that the effect is real. 70 (basical) we’ve proven what everyone has always assumed was true,” said Scott Weich, Professor at the University of Sheffield.

There are many people who help me a lot, among whom are my English teacher, Miss Zhao. I still remember being asked a question in his class, but I fail to answer it. W: I really can’t make up my mind. They’re lovely, but a dog’s a lot of work. I have to feed them, clean them and take them to the doctors from time to time.
M: I’ll tell you what, you don’t have to make a firm decision now. Why don’t you just take one home with you for a couple of days?
W: Could I? I’m not sure about that.
M: Yes, of course. You can see how you get along together, and if things work out, you can keep her. If it doesn’t work out, bring her back, no problem.
W: Oh, that’s a really good idea. Thank you, that’s really kind of you. Well, I think I’ll take this one here. It looks so lovely.

W: How on earth did you fall out of the window?
M: I was sitting with my mother in the living room playing with my toys. My sister started crying in the bedroom, and my mum went to take care of her. So I pushed a chair near a window and climbed on top to have a look outside. And while I was standing by the window, my biscuit fell out of my mouth. I tried to catch it, lost my balance and fell.
W: Oh, my goodness! Do you remember the fall?
M: It was all very quick, but I remember lying on the ground with people all around me. And then I saw my mum. She was hopeless, because she thought I was dead, but all I had was a broken leg. I was very lucky.
W: Surely you’re a lucky boy. Be more careful next time.
Text 8
W: Yes, who’s there?
M: Excuse me. I’m here to apply for a job you advertised on the Net.
W: Come in, please. You have eight seconds to impress me.
M: I’m afraid I don’t understand. I’m here.
W: Three seconds left.
M: Can I at least sit down?
W: There’s no need. The interview is over.
M: Oh, sorry, but I’m afraid I don’t understand.
W: Young man, I’m very busy. I have to interview 50 people today, so I have to act quickly. And you know what? You’ve got the job.
M: This is very strange.
W: Quite so! But I can tell a lot about a person in eight seconds. For instance, from the way you cleaned your shoes at the door, I could tell that you are careful. I know that you are polite by the way you took off your hat when you came in. And, look at your clean hair and fingernails! I think you’ll be just fine. You can start early tomorrow morning.
Text 9
M: Can I help you?
W: Yes. My politics teacher asked us to read a book called Toward the World. According to the data base, the book is in the library. But I haven’t been able to find it.
M: Let me see. Oh yes. Your professor has placed this book on reserve. That means you can not find it on the shelves in its usual place. You need to go to a special room called the reserve room.
W: I’m sorry — I still don’t understand what you mean by “on reserve”.
M: When a book is on reserve, a student can go to the reserve room and ask the reserve librarian for the book. The student can have the book for a few hours, and he or she must read it in the library during that time. That way, the book stays in the library, and all the students can read it.
W: OK. Thank you. I understand now. By the way, how can I go to the reserve room?
M: It’s on the fourth floor, between the reading room and the study room. You’d better go up by the stairs, as the lift is under repair.
W: OK. Thank you.

W: Thank you for calling Cornford Museum. This is a recorded message. The museum is now closed but it is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The office is open, however, and phones are answered between 9 and 5 daily. Please ring between those times if you need to speak to someone. You will now hear some recorded information about the museum. Following the success of last year’s special exhibition on clothes in the eighteenth century, we are pleased to announce that there will soon be another special exhibition at the museum. It will show the diet and eating habits of both the rich and poor members of eighteenth century society. The exhibition will be open to visitors from the beginning of July to the end of September. It contains exhibits that have been collected from all over the world, although there is a special focus on the local area. The easiest way to reach Cornford Museum is by underground as the museum is right beside the underground station. You can also get here by bus or car. But the bus stop is 200 meters from the museum. Besides, the traffic is always heavy outside the museum. The museum has a popular cafe serving hamburgers and cold drinks. There is also a gift shop selling souvenirs about the special exhibition.
