    Do Dolphins Have a Language?
We know that dolphins make unique sounds, but is that a language? If you’re interested in it, you are welcome to the activity recommended by Denise Herzing!
    About Denise Herzing
Denise Herzing of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is the organiser and research director of the Wild Dolphin Project, which has a goal of understanding dolphins’ social system, behaviour, and communication. For over thirty years, she has spent each summer watching Atlantic dolphins carefully in the Bahamas.
    Activity Guide:
    Purpose:
Dolphins use sound to communicate, but they can’t make sounds in the way we humans make. Out of the water dolphins can make different sounds by changing the shape of their blowhole (呼吸孔), which is similar to changing the shape of our own mouths. Underwater, though, they use a totally different system, and they make sounds without letting any air out. You can learn more about how that works here. In this activity we’re going to try to talk like a dolphin.
    Materials:
Nothing! But find a partner, maybe a brother or sister or a parent — or if you have one, a dog or cat. After all, this activity is about communication between humans and animals.
    How To Do It:
Take a deep breath, hold your nose to keep it shut, and try to communicate with your partner. If your partner is a pet, try saying its name or asking it to “come here”.
When you’re done, think about what made it hard, what solutions you found, and think why dolphins may have developed to communicate in this way.
Then listen to sounds from all kinds of sea animals and compare your dolphin sound to theirs.
    21. What can we learn about Denise Herzing?
    A. She holds the activity in FAU.
    B. She is an expert in dolphins.
    C. She wants to find a partner for her research.
    D. She fell in love with dolphins when young.
    22. What would you have to do for the activity?
    A. Have a pet next to you. B. Keep breathing deeply.
    C. Talk with your nose closed. D. Compare dolphins with other animals.
    23. Where can the text be found?
    A. In a diary. B. In a report.
    C. In a travel brochure. D. In an activity book

    B
When Clara Harlowe Barton was 11 years old, her older brother was seriously injured in a fall. Barton spent two years nursing him back to health until he fully got well. Although she had this early nursing experience, Barton would not work as a nurse until later in life.
At the age of seventeen, Barton worked as a teacher in Massachusetts. Twelve years later, she opened the first free public school in New Jersey. The school grew from only six students on the first day of classes to more than 200 students by the end of the school year. When the school opened in the fall of 1853, Barton was surprised to learn that a man had been hired as the school’s head teacher, being paid twice her salary (工资) to run the school that she had set up and made successful. Outraged at this news, she quit her teaching position. “I may sometimes be willing to teach for nothing, but if paid at all, I shall never do a man’s work for less than a man’s pay,” she said.
In 1861, the Civil War began; Barton began collecting supplies (补给) and got passes from the government to send her supplies and services to the front line and field hospitals. And then she became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield”.
In 1869, Barton took a trip to Switzerland where she learned about the International Red Cross. Later, Barton set up the American Red Cross. Under Barton’s leadership, the American Red Cross helped thousands of people in need.
During her lifetime, Barton gave her life and effort to the service and the care of others as a teacher, a Civil War nurse, and founder of the American Red Cross.
    24. What does the underlined word “Outraged” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Sad. B. Moved. C. Angry. D. Frightened.
    25. Why was Barton called the “Angel of the Battlefield”?
    A. She set up a field hospital.
    B. She provided supplies for soldiers.
    C. She did a man’s work in the front line.
    D. She helped thousands of people in need.
    26. What made Barton set up the American Red Cross?
    A. Her brother’s serious injury.
    B. Her dream to become a nurse.
    C. Her experience in Switzerland.
    D. The soldiers’ encouraging praise.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Barton’s life of service to people in need.
    B. Barton’s rich experiences at different ages.
    C. Why Barton set up the American Red Cross.
    D. How Barton opened the first free public school.

    C
Through several measures, Sunifia, a brand in outdoor clothing, is actively supporting a circular (循环的) model of clothing. It encourages people to share, resell, repair, and reuse their clothes, producing less waste.
Every second, one garbage truck of clothes is sent to the landfill (垃圾填埋场) or is burned, according to a report by the Ellen Macarthur Foundation. Sunifia is taking this alarming data seriously.
A few years ago, the fashion brand opened an independent online store, which is a collection of renewed clothing where people resell their old clothes for cash or store credits and shop for second-hand goods. Now Sunifia is including a “buy used” option on their website, offering pre-loved clothes alongside their newest designs.
Other chains, for example, Macy’s, have also used the new circular economy business model. Famous traditional businesses are also becoming used clothing providers, and are changing the way pre-loved clothes are sold and viewed. Even the shoppers, who used to be doubtful, are now open to the idea of buying used quality items. As a result, it is no surprise that the total secondhand market is projected to grow to almost twice the size of fast fashion by 2029, as seen in the report by thredUP.
Naturally, the most sustainable (可持续的) piece of clothing is the one that already exists. This “green” article of clothing doesn’t require using natural resources. It saves clothes from ending up in landfills, and it requires no plastic packaging.
According to a 2018 report by thredUP, buying a piece of used clothing increases its life on average by 2.2 years, which reduces its carbon, waste, and water footprint by 73 percent. So even though the development of innovative (创新的) materials and processes in fashion seems promising, wearing secondhand clothes is the easiest and most immediate way to face the environmental challenges the fashion industry brings.
Action like Sunifia’s Buy Used initiative shows responsibility towards the environment and also encourages other companies to produce high-quality items that last for years. Buying second-hand clothes makes it possible to get the same great quality expected from leading brands at a more affordable price, and increases the lifetime of clothing.
    28. Why did Sunifia open an online store?
    A. To know people’s shopping habits better.
    B. To play its part in environment protection.
    C. To help people reduce spending on clothes.
    D. To build up a collection of pre-loved clothes.
    29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
    A. The second-hand direction is here to stay.
    B. Sunifia has set a good example to others.
    C. Businesses affect people’s shopping habits.
    D. The second-hand market’s growth is unexpected.
    30. What’s the author’s suggestion for the fashion industry?
    A. Encouraging innovation in cloth. B. Taking advantage of pre-loved clothes.
    C. Reducing the use of plastic packaging. D. Improving the process of making clothes.
    31. What lesson can we learn from the text?
    A. Fashion comes full circle. B. Everyone must do his part.
    C. Waste could be turned into treasure. D. Necessity is the mother of invention.

    D
Ernest Hemingway famously said that writers should “write hard and clear about what hurts”. Although Hemingway may not have known it at the time, research has now shown that writing about “what hurts” can help improve our mental health.
There are more than 200 studies that show the positive effect of writing on mental health. But while the psychological (心理的) benefits are true for many people, researchers don’t completely agree on why or how writing helps. One opinion suggests that hiding feelings can lead to psychological pain. It stands to reason that writing might improve mental health because it offers a safe and free way to express feelings that were once hidden. However, recent studies have begun to show how an increase in self-awareness (自我意识), rather than simply expressing feelings, could be the key to these improvements in mental health.
As a matter of fact, self-awareness is being able to turn your attention inward. By turning our attention inward, we can become more aware of our behavior, feelings, beliefs, and values. Research suggests that becoming more self-aware can increase our confidence and encourage us to be more willing to accept others. It can also help us to exercise more self-control and make better decisions.
Writing might be really helpful in increasing self-awareness because it can be practiced daily. There are three types of writing which can improve your self-awareness and, in turn, your mental health: expressive writing, reflective writing, and creative writing. Expressive writing is often used in therapeutic settings (治疗环境) where people are asked to write about their thoughts and feelings related to a stressful life event. Reflective writing is regularly used in professional settings, often as a way to help nurses, doctors, teachers, psychologists, and social workers become better at their jobs. Poems, short stories, and novels are all considered forms of creative writing. Writing creatively offers a unique way to explore thoughts, feelings, ideas, and beliefs. For example, you could write a novel that shows your concerns about climate change or a children’s story that speaks about your beliefs about friendship. Writing creatively about challenging experiences, like sadness, can also offer a way to communicate to others something that you feel is too difficult to say directly.
So why not take some time to write down your feelings about a stressful event that has happened during the pandemic? Or write about a difficult work situation and consider what you have learned from it? If you prefer to do something more creative, then try writing a poem or story. Each of these pieces of writing will give you a chance to reflect on this past year, ask yourself important questions, and make creative choices. Spending just 15 minutes doing this may give you an opportunity to become more self-aware, which could lead to improvements in your mental health.
    32. What have recent studies focused on according to the text?
    A. What Hemingway said being true. B. People expressing feelings by writing.
    C. Writing helping increase self-awareness. D. Writing leading to good mental health.
    33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
    A. The benefits of self-awareness. B. The types of self-awareness.
    C. Ways to raise self-awareness. D. Research about self-awareness.
    34. What can we know about reflective writing?
    A. It is usually used as a treatment.
    B. It may help improve work efficiency.
    C. It is mainly about one’s personal life.
    D. It may have one use much imagination.
    35. In which part of a magazine may this text appear?
    A. Education. B. Health. C. Career. D. Literature.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was our first evening dog-sitting while our daughter was on holiday in Costa Rica. Louie, her dog, searched the house for his “mommy”. Then, that disappointed but determined dog had a plan.
While my husband Paul and I were watching TV, we heard loud sounds on the stairs. Something heavy was being dragged (拖) down the stairs. I turned around and found this six-month-old dog was dragging his large carrier down the stairs.
Louie looked at us, moved his tail and ran back up the stairs. We were curious about what he was doing.
We watched in amazement as Louie dragged his personal things, one by one, down the stairs: his blanket, bowl, ball and sweater. This project took most of the evening, and Louie never got tired.
What happened next made us realize that not only did this dog have a purpose but he obviously put thought and reasoning into each move. He put his things in the carrier. This was extremely difficult as the carrier had a lip (口) that was taller than him.
After Louie finished packing his things, he tried to jump inside. Once inside, he got the zipper (拉链) between his teeth and, with all the strength he had, he pulled up the zipper. I admired his patience. Then he lay down and went to sleep.
The message was very clear. He wanted to see his “mommy”. He had seen her pack her suitcase and go away. He must do the same so he could find her. He stayed in the carrier all night, and when I opened it the next morning, he was very excited. Believing he had arrived, he jumped up — but his “mommy” was not there. Then, I started making notes about Louie’s behaviour.
Louie surprised us with new activities every day. He liked going for a car ride with my husband. The possibility of stopping at McDonald’s for chicken was his favorite.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式作答。
One day, my husband didn’t stop at McDonald’s and left Louie in the car with the window open. _________________________________________________...

    参考范文
One day, my husband didn’t stop at McDonald’s and left Louie in the car with the window open. That dog, with short legs, managed to jump out without getting injured. He then walked two blocks in a busy area and found Paul in a store. As Paul was paying for his things, he heard a man say, “Well, little fellow, where did you come from?” Paul was shocked to see Louie, who looked up at him as if to say, “I found you all by myself.” Of course they stopped for some chicken on the way home.
It seemed that Louie knew I was recording his story. Every time he made me laugh, he would pull me to the desk and move his tail, as if to say, “Please write it down now.” Writing Louie’s story changed my life and set me on the path to a new job as an author and radio talk-show host. Now Louie is an old dog — just as cute, certainly as smart, and still up to his old and new tricks.

    Text 1
W: I wonder if anyone showed up at Mary’s party last night.
M: People in the marketing department did. I went there and happened to see their manager talking with ours.

    Text 2
M: Where do you want to go, madam?
W: Central Park. It is nine now. Can we get there in about fifteen minutes?
M: I would say it will take at least twenty-five minutes. The traffic is heavy at this time of day.

    Text 3
W: It’s so kind of you to see me off. Now I’m going to board the plane.
M: It’s a pity that you haven’t got time to visit all the places of interest.
W: You know, business trips never leave enough time for sightseeing.

    Text 4
M: Any suggestions about the presentation?
W: It is good overall. But you need to make some small changes.
    M: What would you suggest?
W: Perhaps it would be better to put the product information before the cost.

    Text 5
W: Jack, the meeting schedule has come out. Would you like to see it?
M: No, I can guess what it’s about.
W: Come on, I think the following activities will cheer you up.

    Text 6 (第6题为总结题)
W: Thank you for coming today. I know how busy you are.
M: You’re welcome. It is my pleasure.
W: ⑦Can you talk a little bit about your career? Like how many movies have you acted in?
M: ⑦I think… more than forty.
W: That’s impressive. Do you have any plans for the future?
M: Well, maybe I will become a businessman or I’ll just retire.
W: Oh, please don’t quit. You know, a lot of people like you.
M: Thanks, I’m happy to hear that. It is not yet decided.

    Text 7
    M: ⑧Hello, who is this?
W: ⑧⑩Good morning, uncle. How are you?
    M: ⑧Sorry, I don’t recognize your voice.
    W: ⑧It’s me, Judy.
M: Oh, Judy, you sound quite different this time. There must be a problem with my phone. Anyway, how is your new job?
W: It’s fine. ⑨⑩I’m just calling to tell you that there is a job opening in my company. ⑩I wonder if Kate wants to apply.
M: ⑩You’re so kind to your cousin. By the way, for which position?
    W: A sales manager.
M: OK, I’ll inform her later.

    Text 8
M: Hi, Janet. ⑪I want to talk about the meeting time next Wednesday. Do you have time?
W: Sure. We said ten thirty. What’s the problem?
M: Yeah, we did say that. ⑪But I’d like to start the meeting earlier.
W: Oh, I see. We could put it earlier to ten. Is that OK?
M: ⑫Could we make it nine o’clock? I have to attend another meeting at eleven.
W: No problem. ⑬And I’ll see Sven later. I can tell him about the time change.
M: ⑬You don’t have to do that. I’ll send an email to everyone to inform them that the time has changed.
    W: OK.

    Text 9
W: ⑭Hello, welcome to Shake it Off Fitness. How can I help you?
M: I saw the advertisement outside. Could I get some details of it?
    W: Sure.
M: Hmm... ⑮When does it open every day?
W: ⑮We open at 6:00 a.m. and close at midnight.
M: I see. Another question: do you have personal trainers? Will you do a personalized(个性化的) evaluation for me?
W: Sure we do. The trainer will design an exercise plan for you and show you exactly what to do.
    M: OK, I got it.
W: ⑯You can have a talk with other members and try the facilities right there. Then you can make a decision.
    M: ⑯That’s a good idea, many thanks.
    Text 10
M: The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney, an astronaut on the Ares 3 mission to Mars. After a terrible storm almost destroys the ship and the base, the crew of his ship believe he is dead. But Mark does not die in the storm, and he has been left behind. Alone on the red planet, he has to survive until the next mission to Mars arrives. While this novel is fiction, in some ways it feels like non-fiction. ⑱It is very scientific and packed with details about survival on Mars. ⑲Watney is a botanist(植物学家) and engineer, and he begins to grow food and produce water in his artificial camp. ⑰The author is Andy Weir, and this is his first published book. In it he has created a realistic character. There is a lot of humor in the story, and the reader can identify with the emotions (although no one can really imagine what it’s like to be on Mars). ⑳Watney admits at the beginning that he is in deep trouble, but he never gives up. ⑱What The Martian gives us is a realistic look at an intelligent person alone on a planet who tries to survive.
