Are you the only child in your family? If so,do you enjoy it or do you want more siblings (兄弟姐妹)?
On May 31, a key meeting of the Communist Party of China unveiled a policy that would allow all couples to have up to three children. The move is expected to maximize the population's role in driving economic and social growth, since this is a critical time for China to transform the world's most populous country into a powerhouse (强国) with a quality workforce, according to the National Health Commission.
The three child policy is also expected to prevent the decline in the nation's birthrate and address the challenge of a rapidly aging population, China Daily reported.
China's annual number of newborns has fallen for four years in a row. The country's total birthrate- the average number of children born to each woman- stood at 1.3 in 2020. The number is below the rate of 2. 1 that would maintain a stable population, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The declining birthrate has also brought a sharp increase in the proportion of the population aged 60 or above, rising from 10. 3 percent to 18.7 percent in the past decade. An increasingly elderly population will increase the cost of labor and the pressure on the social security net. It also means there will be a lack of young labor force. Therefore, it's not good for economic growth, according to Chen Youhua, a professor at Nanjing University.
In fact, the new birth policy is a step to further relax the family planning policy, The one- child policy was introduced in the 1970s and aimed to control the fast-growing population. Then in 2013, China allowed couples to have a second child if either parent was an only child. And in 2016, all couples were allowed to have two children.
However, not all people have shown their support for this latest policy. Many couples complained about the rising cost of raising a child. A netizen named Qinfeng commented.“High cost of education and both the physical and mental exhaustion stopped me from having more than one child.” Also, many women are reluctant(不情愿的) to give birth because that could mean sacrificing their career prospects, according to Mu Guangzong. a professor at Peking University.
In that case, Mu noted that it is better to implement supporting measures with the three-child policy, such as more preferential (优惠的) policies for couples that would ease their parental burden.
24. What might NOT be the main cause for the new policy?
A. To improve the child-care service system.
B. To stop the declining birthrate.
C. To increase the population's role.
D. To address the challenge of the aging population.
25. What can be known from the text?
A. China's annual number of newborns has fallen for decades.
B. The government will protect the legal rights of women in employment.
C. The new policy allows couples to have up to three children.
D. Measures will be taken to improve the high-quality education.
26. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "implement"?
A. To make use of. B. To carry out.
C. To get along with. D. To have a command of.
27. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To show his love of children healthcare.
B. To share his concerns about birthrate.
C. To introduce the new family size policy.
D. To emphasize the physical and mental exhaustion.
C
Nothing feels more like summer than a barbecue(烧烤)in the open air. But the buzzing(嗡嗡声) of mosquitoes around our ears really makes us annoy.
“The buzzing in your ear is mostly just a side effect of the mosquito's wings beating,” said Michael Riehle, a professor at the University of Arizona. “The sound doesn't have a long range, so you notice it most when they are flying around your ears.”
“From a distance, mosquitoes track carbon dioxide that we give out.” Riehle told Live Science. “They fly back and forth to follow that concentration level back to the source.”
But in fact, that buzzing you hear is likely from a female mosquito. That's because male and female mosquitoes lead very different lives. The males typically hang out and feed on the sweetest part of flowers; they couldn't care less about the humans wandering about. The females, however, need to find a blood meal in order to have enough energy to produce eggs.
As she approaches, the female mosquito zeros in on body heat and the carbon dioxide to land on the victim. The female mosquito uses taste sensors on her feet to determine whether the human, or any blood-bearing animal, is adequate to tap for her next meal.
But while we feel mosquitoes buzzing around our ears, Riehle noted that most mosquitoes are not attracted to our heads. Rather, these bloodsuckers may be more likely to seek out our feet, which have bacteria that give off attractive smell to mosquitoes. However, most people probably don't notice a mosquito buzzing around their ankles, he said.
Another study found that female mosquitoes were more attracted to men who had less diverse bacteria on their skin than to men with more diverse skin bacteria; these bloodsuckers also prefer those who wear dark colors, such as black.
28. What attracts mosquitoes to our head?
A. There exists their favorite smell. B. The face skin is easy to stick in.
C. There is most carbon dioxide. D. They can suck most blood there.
29. What do female mosquitoes use to determine a meal?
A. Her nose. B. Her ears. C. Her eyes. D. Her sensors.
30. What color might help avoid mosquitoes most according to the text?
A. White. B. Blue. C. Black. D. Red.
31. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. How can we avoid the buzzing of mosquitoes?
B. Why do mosquitoes buzz in our ears?
C. How are male and female mosquitoes different?
D. What effect does the buzzing of mosquitoes have?
D
Why does Haiti so tend to have fatal earthquakes? Earthquakes have been causing huge damage in Haiti since at least the 18th century. The capital city has been destroyed twice in 19 years. The 21st century has been no more kind.
The Earth’s outer shell is made up of tectonic plates (构造板块) that move. Haiti sits near the crossing of two tectonic plaits that make up the Earth’s outer shell. Earthquakes can occur when those plates move against each other and create friction (摩擦力).
Haiti is also overpopulated. Plus, many of its buildings are designed to resist hurricanes but not earthquakes. Those buildings can survive strong winds bat are easy to fail down when the ground shrikes. Poor building practices can also play a role.
“I think it’s important to recognize that there’s no such thing as a natural disaster,” said Wendy Bohon, a geologist. “What you have is a natural disaster that comes with a weak architecture system. We do know that earthquakes like this can cause huge damage because of the fault,” said Wendy. “And it’s quite a significant risk in places that don’t have the construction practices to resist the shaking.”
Construction of more earthquake-resistant buildings remains a challenge in Haiti, which is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. “While there have been some success stories of Haitians building more earthquake-resistant structures, the country has lacked a centralized effort to do so,” said Mark Schuller, a professor of anthropology and nonprofit and NGO studies at Northern Illinois University. Haiti’s government has become increasingly weak, while non-governmental organizations only focus on their own projects.
“There is technical knowledge in Haiti, There are trained architects. There are city planners. That’s not the problem,” Schuller said. “The problem is a lack of funding for coordination (协调), and lack of political will from donors to organizations providing aid.”
32. Which factor causing the huge damage is highlighted?
A. Its overpopulation. B. Its weak government.
C. Its weak architecture system. D. Its geographical location.
33. What does the underlined part “the fault” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Lacking political will to provide aid.
B. Lacking earthquake-resistant buildings.
C. Lacking hurricane-resistant buildings.
D. Sitting on the crossing of two tectonic plates.
34. What’s Schuller’s attitude towards Haiti’s government?
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Interested.
35. Which of the following can be a problem according to the last paragraph?
A. Technology and money. B. Skilled architects.
C. Urban designers. D. Fund and will.

Do you often go out for shopping? How to avoid germs when shopping in the grocery store? 36

Just as you're being thoughtful about your own health, be thoughtful about the health of others, suggests Dr. Larkin. “ 40 see if you can shop for them or teach them to use an online and delivery option,” she says. “Be patient and kind with one another, especially the workers keeping the stores open and functioning--and of course, if you are ill, please stay home and don't expose others."
A. If you have an elderly neighbor who needs help
B. you had better stay at home instead of going out
C. As a result, avoid touching your face while shopping
D. you decrease your risk of becoming infected
E. Before you head out to one, you need some guidelines to ensure your safety

Hello, boys and girls,
I’m Li Hua from Class 3, Senior 2. As Thanksgiving is drawing near, I’d like to express my gratitude for my parents.
As we all know, it is a traditional virtue to be grateful to others. In my opinion, the people we should thank most are our parents. Without parents’ care and love, we couldn’t have grown up healthily and happily. They always do whatever they can to help us. When it comes to how to thank them, I think it is important for us to be polite to our parents. What’s more, we should try to spare some time to communicate with them every day and do whatever we can to help them.
Let’s take action to show our love. Thank you for your listening.
