Basketball was invented in 1891 by a Canadian-American teacher named Dr. James Naismith while he was wrking in the US city f Springfield, Massachusetts. He invented basketball because he wanted a game that was nt t rugh and that culd be played in an indr gymnasium.
The sprt became very ppular because it didn’t require much equipment, it culd be played indrs (s it culd be played in winter r when it was raining utside), and it was safe. Nwadays, almst every primary and high schl in the US has basketball nets in their gymnasium and many have nets utside as well.
Students cmpete in teams within their schl, between different schls, and even between different schl districts. Many American Ss dream f playing prfessinally in the Natinal Basketball Assciatin (NBA) as adults.
