I had moved to Japan for a long-term client consulting engagement. After a few days in a Tokyo hotel, I moved to an apartment. After being moved in by my colleagues, it was time to get dinner. I found a pizza deliver flyer in my mailbox and decided to simply order a pizza as I might have the previous week in Manhattan. The phone call to Cali Pizza was easier than anticipated and while waiting for the pizza I set about unpacking.

Unfortunately, after 45 minutes no pizza. I figured that my "easy" call really wasn't and that I would need to make alternate plans for dinner. While thinking about what to do next, my phone rang. It was Cali Pizza calling to say that they could not find my apartment based on the address that I had given them. Once it was determined that I had provided an incorrect address, the clerk on the phone asked me to describe what I could see from my window. After some back and forth they seemed satisfied that they knew where I was.

A few minutes later the pizza arrived. This is when my “customer delight” experience took over. First, the delivery person apologized repeatedly for being late, then he showed me the small blue metal plate on my building with the correct address, and finally he refused to accept payment for the pizza because he was late. Net result： one delighted customer (me) , and frequent orders from Cali Pizza during my two-year stay in Japan.

Such "customer delight" experiences become stories I have used to illustrate what it means to truly delight a customer.

Long before they found their way into living rooms around, the world, computers were the belongings of institutes and corporate headquarters. After all, the huge and heavy mainframes of the 1960s might easily fill a room of their own.

The invention of the microprocessor — Intel's 4004 was the first to be made commercially available in 1971—changed all that. Manufacturers were finally able to produce machines small enough to fit into customers' homes. Yet, the question was： Could firms persuade people to actually want one there?

The story of how computers enter our homes is not one of technology, but one of marketing and design, according to writer and journalist Alex Wiltshire, whose new book, Home Computers ： 100 Icons that Defined a Digital Generation, tells the industry's early history through its most influential models. "The technology was already in existence," he said in a phone interview. "But what was important was the idea of putting it into a form that could be bought and easily used. ”

The very first models in Wiltshire's book were aimed at hobbyists and industry insiders. These so-called “kit" computers performed only basic functions. But the arrival of user-friendly machines like the CPET 2001 and Apple II in 1977 were signs of a turning point.

"There was a massive change around the idea of 'What if these computers were packaged, presented and designed in a form that anyone could use?’ —that they wouldn't require people to learn computer languages, or to devote several rooms of their houses," Wiltshire said. "What if there were these objects that people could buy off the shelf and just plug into their TVs? That was the moment that the idea of a 'home computer' was born, and it was absolutely down to design. ”

In a country where over 80% of residents live in public housing, a government commitment to sustainable urban design could have huge influence. And when it's a tropical country like Singapore where convenience and air conditioning are a way of life, the impact could be greater still.

Promising 42,000 new homes across five residential districts, the eco-town of Tengah will be the 24th new settlement built by Singapore's government since World War IL It is, however, the first with centralized cooling, automated trash collection and a car-free town center, with which environment lovers hope to offer a roadmap for reducing carbon emissions in the Southeast Asian city-state.

The development is named as "Forest Town" by officials, due to its abundant greenery and public gardens. Once home to brickmaking factories, and later used for military training, the 2.7- square-mile site has been reclaimed by a forest in recent years. A 328-foot-wide ecological “corridor" will be maintained through its center, providing safe passage to wildlife and connecting a water catchment area on one side to a nature reserve on the other.

The project has proven a new plan for urban planners supporting green design principles and “smart" technology, according to Chong Fook Loong, group director for research and planning at Singapore's Housing and Development Board, the agency overseeing the country's public housing. “Tengah is a new start," he said in a video interview, explaining that roads and parking are being pushed beneath the town center. " We' re going for the ideal concept of separated traffic, with everything underground and then the ground level totally freed up for pedestrians—for people. So, it's a very safe environment for all.”
