Crw is ne f three Alaska Native students-alng with Kaylee King and Ethan Lin-cin-wh recrded their hunting traditin befre they graduated last spring. Their recrd was chsen as a finalist in this year's NPR Student Recrd Challenge. The three students say hunting helped them get thrugh the islatin f the pandemic, when their schls and many ther activities like sprts were shut dwn because f COVID-19. The students explain that, as time ges by, fewer and fewer peple are practicing hunting.
"It makes me really sad because the way we used t d things is s different frm hw we d them nw," Crw says. "Even ur language is slwly fading away." In the struggle t survive the ever htter deserts f Califrnia, there are winners and lsers. Amng the lsers are desert birds, whse ppulatins have fallen amng the heat stress f climate change. The winners, it turns ut, are small burrwing mammals(穴居哺乳动物), which take refuge frm the sun undergrund. Researchers nted that the stable mammals ppulatins frmed a striking cntrast t the extremely bad cnditin f birds.
But why? Birds had a higher evaprative(蒸发)heat lss. Birds were mre expsed t the effects f warming, s they had higher energy csts t maintain their bdy temperature. Hwever, mammals were able t reduce their bdy temperature by using burrws during the day.
Temperatures have risen abut 4 degrees Fahrenheit n average acrss the area studied, but the heat affects birds and small mammals differently. As part f the study, scientists mdeled each species' bdy temperature and cling needs under different desert cnditins. T calculate that, they measured the cnductivity(传导率)f the animals' fur r feathers, and used infrmatin n their heat reducing behavirs.
The mdels shwed that in the fight against climate change, there was nt a level playing field fr furred and feathered desert animals. Cling csts-r the resurces needed t maintain stable bdy temperature-were abut 3.3 times higher fr birds than they were fr small mammals, the study reprted.
Small mammals have shwn this remarkable stability. It's really quite interesting that, in the same regin, with the same level f climate change, these tw species have respnded very differently t the changes taking place. Insights int the status f different species can help scientists take steps t prtect them, such as increasing fire preventin in high desert areas, and enhancing water surces in thse areas. The study als demnstrates that climate change is already reshaping the Califrnia desert.
