New uses for old clothing Nowadays, we’re more wasteful than ever-buying, using and throwing things away without thinking about the costs. We need to start living more responsibly-but how? One answer is to upcycle (再生利用). If you’re like me, you might already make soil for gardening from food waste and use empty paper boxes as storage space. Did you know you can apply(应用)the same way to old clothing? You just need imagination! I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try?
Reply Terry B Posted at 9:08 a. m. on 11th February 2018 Why don’t you give your old clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don’t wear anymore. So I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need. Reply Gina Posted at 9:28 a. m. on 11th February 2018 Good point! I’m talking about only the oldest clothing in your room-the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil
Reply Betty99 Posted at 10:18 a. m. on 11th February 2018 I’ve made shopping bags out of T-shirts and dog toys out of socks. Upcycling clothing is a fun hobby, but the most important thing is that it makes me feel like I’m living less wastefully. |

Today we can do everything with apps — pay bills, order food and shop for anything. Mobile technology means we can hold the world in our hands. However, when it comes to technology and healthcare
Let’s start with the ways to get healthcare. Telemedicine can allow a patient to use technology to see the doctor on line and get a diagnosis (诊断) and instructions without leaving home.
In addition, there are many patient websites. These allow for different kinds of interactions about our health needs without involving the medical team. Setting a date with doctors and reading lab results are readily achieved by technology.
A whole new age of medical care seems likely to come in the future. But every coin has two sides. What might be on the other side of techno-healthcare?
Firstly, we should think about the healthcare experience as a whole. A usual visit to a doctor begins with a receptionist, who can see and tell how a patient is doing. This may influence the treatment effect. It’s unlikely that a patient website will have such intuition.
Next, sharing the details of one’s life requires trust, which takes time to build. This is certainly true in healthcare.
Lastly, test results can be difficult to understand. When someone without a medical degree sees a flagged result with no explanation on the website, there’s room for all kinds of stories to form in their minds — and also great worry.
So how does medicine adapt (适应) to the new technology age? Very talented companies are working on it. There is medical equipment that can be used at home to send important signs and heart sounds through telemedicine. It seems likely that some companies will find a way to explain test results.
But what it will not achieve is the warmth of human interaction and touch. Patients often need someone to listen to — and care about — their journey story, which will never be realized through a human-less technology. Technology should be a tool, but depending on it totally will most certainly have unexpected effects. Let’s not allow our humanity to be one of them.
29.According to the passage, how does technology help healthcare?
A.It encourages doctors to voice their needs on the websites.
B.It offers a patient a convenient way to get a diagnosis.
C.It improves relations between doctors and patients.
D.It provides an opportunity to build a medical team.
30.The underlined word “intuition” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A.an ability to understand B.an interesting action
C.a chance to win D.a fair decision
31.What do you know about techno-healthcare from the passage?
A.Patient websites require trust from doctors.
B.Talented companies can give medical advice.
C.Flagged results may cause worry for patients.
D.Medical equipment collects patients’ stories.
32.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.technology can deal with unexpected effects
B.telemedicine can take the place of usual healthcare
C.it is easy for patients to adapt to the new technology age
D.techno-healthcare should take humanity into consideration
Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He would suddenly fall ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He worked with the seriously sick children. He would talk, play and do arts with them.
One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralysed(使瘫痪)her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started to visit her in her room, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, the girl began to paint using her mouth.
Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill again. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, the little girl came in. But this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read, “Thank you for helping me walk.”
My dad would cry every time he told us this story, and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than a doctor. And my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.

Imagine this. There’s an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple? A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greatest Strength, suggests that willpower(意志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term, rather than in the short term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book The Marshmallow Test. In 1972, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow(棉花软糖), if they waited fifteen minutes, they’d be given a second one (and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids do? Well, as you can imagine, he got in touch with the children, who, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who’d shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle(肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets.
So, if you do daily “self-control exercises”, such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your “willpower muscle” can get tired. If you have to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. In that way, you’ll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!
37.In Paragraphs 2 & 3, the famous experiment explains ________.
A.more kids have strong willpower B.willpower influences people’s lives greatly
