1. Although 的用法
although/though用作连词, 意为“尽管, 虽然” , 常用于引导让步状语从句。让步状语从句表示即使出现在从句中的情况,主句动作仍然会发生,有“退一步说……”的意思。
although和though可用于句首或句中, 但不能与连词but同时使用,不过可与yet, still连用。
若主从句的主语相同, 且从句谓语含有动词be, 可将从句主语和动词be省略。注意:although和though在一般情况下可以互换使用。在口语中,though较常使用,although比though更正式一些。
e.g. I will try it, although I may fail. 即使我可能失败,我也要试一下。
Although /though (it was) snowing, it was not very cold.
There is air around us, although we can’t see it.
2. Practice
Mr Wu went to see My Fair Lady last Friday. However, he did not enjoy himself. Read the sentences below and find out why. Join the two parts of the sentences by using ‘although/though’.
1) I left early to avoid the rush hour/ there was a lot of traffic in the streets
2) I could not find a space to park my car / the cinema had a big car park
3) I finally got a ticket / my seat was in the last row in the corner
4) people kept coming in / the film had already been on for 15 minutes
5) I felt very hot / I only had a T-shirt on
6) some people were talking loudly / they were told to keep quiet
3. Exercises
将括号内的内容重新排序,完成句子,注意运用although / though。

Step 3 Grammar explanation (so...that and such...that )

The flowers are so beautiful that everyone likes them.
1. such... that 作“ 如此…以至于” 解,连接结果状语从句。(结果状语从句是用来补充说明主句动作发生所带来的结果。)
和 so... that 意思相同,但是用法不同。so 是副词,后面可加形容词和副词:so+ adj./adv.+ that clause
而 such 是限定词,后面要加名词或名词词组,名词前面可以带形容词,也可以不带。such +noun/noun phrases + that clause
如果such 后面的名词前由many, much, few, little 等词所修饰的话,则不用such 而用so。 He had so little education that he was unfit for this job.
2. Practice用so…that或such…that翻译句子。
1) 这个问题太难了,没有人能回答。
2) 这部电影太好看了,电影院里座无虚席。
3) 那家剧院很大,他们几乎在里面迷路了。
3. ExercisesShirley does not know who Audrey Hepburn was. Amy is telling her something about Hepburn. Help Amy join her sentences with so…that and such …that.
1) Hepburn was very beautiful. Many people were amazed by her beauty.
2) Hepburn was a kind lady. She spent her last few years working with UNICEF to help poor children all over the world.
3) Hepburn acted very well. Some people mistook her for a real princess.
4) Hepburn was a great actress. She’ll always be remembered.
4. 用such, so 或 very 填空。
1) Miss Jiang is _____ a popular teacher that almost everyone likes her.
2) The computer is ______expensive that I cannot afford it at all.
3) Nancy is _______ lonely and wants to go back home at once.

Step 4 Grammar explanation (so that)
1. so that引导目的状语从句, (目的状语从句用以说明主句动作发生的目的。)其从句中的谓语动词通常和情态动词can, may, will, might, would, could, should等情态动词连用, 而且主句和从句之间不使用逗号。
so that意为“以便, 为了, 使能够”,可以与in order that相替换。
2. so…that…引导结果状语从句, 意为“如此 ……以至于……”, so后面加形容词或副词。
e.g. This book is so interesting that everyone wants to read it.
He ran so fast that I couldn’t catch up with him.
so that句型也可以用来引导结果状语从句, 意为“因此, 结果”, 这时其从句中的谓语动词不与情态动词连用。
这种结构和so…that…引导的结果在含义上有很大的区别。
He didn’t plan his time well, so that he didn’t finish his work in time. 他没有把时间计划好, 结果没有按时完成这项工作。 (没按时完成这项工作的原因是没计划好时间)
It’s so hot that I can’t sleep.
天气热得我不能入睡。 (天气热到人不能入睡的程度。)
3. Practice用so that翻译句子。
1) 我戴眼镜是为了看得更清楚。2) 他借了很多书,以便在暑假里阅读。
