Mst f us think f tears as a human phenmenn shwing human emtin. But they’re nt just fr crying: All vertebrates (脊椎动物), even reptiles and birds, have tears, which are extremely imprtant fr maintaining healthy eyesight.
Nw, a new study, published this week in the jurnal Frntier in Veterinary Science, shws that nn-human animals, tears are nt s different frm ur wn. The chemical similarities are s great, in fact, that the cmpsitin f ther species’ tears—and hw they’re adapted t their envirnments—may prvide a new view in better treatments fr human eye diseases.
Previusly, scientists had studied clsely nly the tears f a handful f mammals. In the new study, the tears f reptiles and birds fr the first time were analyzed. Tears frm a film—a very thin layer ver the eye that cnsists f three ingredients: mucus (黏液), water, and il. The mucus cats the eyes surface and helps t stick the film t the eye, the water is a natural salty slutin cntaining prteins (蛋白质) and minerals, and the il prevents the eye frm drying ut.
Humans are the nly knwn species t prduce emtinal tears; the expressin “crcdile tears”, which refers t a persn’s false emtin, cmes frm the tendency f crcdiles t release tears as they eat.
But tears play key rles beynd weeping, ntes Linel Sebbag, a scientist at Iwa State University, in Ames. They help with visin and als prtect the eye against infectin and prvide nutritin t the crnea, the eye’s clear uter layer.
By prviding infrmatin abut hw t prtect the visin f, fr example, sea turtles, which are endangered, the study culd prvide sme useful infrmatin fr envirnmentalists. If we understand what makes up a healthy tear film, then we can understand hw envirnmental effects can harm an animal’s eyes. Learning hw reptiles and birds use tears may als inspire new treatments fr cnditins such as dry eyes, which ccurs when there is nt enugh il existing in tears. The disease, cmmn in cats, dgs and peple, can smetimes lead t blindness.
    28. What d human and animals’ tears have in cmmn?

    C. Tears shelter eyes frm being infected.D. Weeping cntributes t eye diseases.
    31. What might be the best title fr the passage?

    B. A better treatment fr eye diseases.
    C. Nn-human tears prmise new cures.
    D. Other species’ tears are similar t humans’.
