In the subway station, I notice a black teenage boy waiting for the train, sitting on a railing (栏杆) just in front of a moving escalator (自动扶梯). It’s a hot evening; there is no air in the station. This black kid is just sitting there, settled on the railing, and I’m just standing there about 10 feet away looking for the faraway lights of the oncoming train. Then suddenly a white police officer is asking the kid for identification (身份). The kid turns a little annoyed and asks what he’s been bothering about. The officer doesn’t explain. The kid pulls out some I.D. and hands it to the officer who looks at it and then barks out a demand for something with an address on it, a driver’s license.
Unwillingly, the kid pulls out a second piece of identification. The officer looks at it and tells the kid to come with him. Nothing I have seen or heard explains the officer’s strict approach or why the kid is being led away.
I get up to the officer and politely ask what this guy did and where he is taking him. He looks at me like I’m armed and crazy and tells me that it’s none of my business and to stay out of this.
“Could I please take down your badge (警徽) number, sir, as I’d like to report all this,” I say.
“Take down my badge number and then you show me a piece of identification. What are you, some lawyer?”
I copy down his badge number and then show him my driver’s license, asking, “Could you please tell me what this is all for?”
Looking at me over and again asking if I’m a lawyer, he tells me he’s taking the kid in for blocking the escalator and me in for “obstructing a police action.” Another black man hearing all this asks what’s going on and the officer gets very nervous. So I decide to go with him to his office. Then the officer gives his version(版本) of what happened and I politely interrupt to explain that the kid was in no way blocking the escalator traffic and that I was in no way “obstructing a police action”, not adding that I thought the way the officer handling the situation was racist (种族主义者)and unnecessarily strict.
After this experience in the police station, I’m still wondering whether a well-dressed white man will be faced with a sharp command for identification for sitting on an escalator railing waiting for a train. If a bystander does want to get involved and inquire about an obviously unfair arrest, is a policeman’s only response a second arrest? Will our police officers always be seen by black kids as evils? Is my charge with racism too strong?
24. What is the black teenager doing at the train station?
A. He is blocking the escalator. B. He is escaping the police.
C. He is waiting for the train. D. He is damaging the escalator.
25. Why does the author stand out to help the black teenager?
A. He is a racist. B. He is not afraid to get involved.
C. He is black. D. He has a sense of justice.
26. According to the passage, we can know that ______.
A. The black boy doesn’t obey the police officer.
B. Subway stations are good places to hang about.
C. The white policeman thinks badly of the black teenager.
D. Situations like this in the passage will never change.
27. Which of the following best explain the underlined word in the passage?
A. Blame. B. Forbid. C. Prevent. D. Defend.
C
Living the light life
Many of us like to dine ( 吃 饭 ) out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing hearty, fat-filled dishes and sugar-charged desserts, which are not easily cooked at home.
The recent rise of light meals, however, gives diners a smarter choice. According to Economic Daily, low-calorie, low-fat and high-fiber ( 高纤维的) meals have become popular in China's restaurants and online delivery platforms.
The country saw a rapid expansion of restaurants specializing in light meals, from just 600 in 2017 to more than 3,500 in 2018. According to a report released by Meituan, a major online food delivery platform, the number of light meals ordered online also rose 75 percent from the previous year.
Having a light meal, however, doesn't mean eating only vegetables. Different from the meat-free lifestyle, a typical light dish avoids oily, salty and spicy food. Instead, it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Healthy nutrients (营养成分) are the theme of the light meal.
These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and controlling your weight. That's probably why so many people, especially millennials (千禧一代), are into them. Diners see it as “a great way to avoid bloating (变胖),” wrote the Telegraph.
“After eating several light meals, I felt my appetite has shrunk (缩小). I now prefer light flavors,”Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, told China Daily. She shared a picture of her lunch: a mixture of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.
These changes in eating behavior are connected to deeper changes in how people think about food, says Walter Willett, chair of the nutrition department at the Harvard T.Chan School of Public Health, US. “Diet quality, not quantity, is important for both weight control and long-term well-being,” Willett told The New York Times.
So the next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will satisfy not only your stomachs but maybe also your hearts.
28. What are light meals?
A. Low-calorie and high-fiber meals. B. Meat-free dishes.
C. Sugar-charged desserts. D. Fat-filled dishes.
29. What is the main way that the author used to prove the popularity of light meals?
A. Giving descriptions. B. Giving examples.
C. Listing numbers. D. Showing other people's opinions.
30. Why do many young people enjoy light meals, according to the article?
A. They can help people control their weight. B. They are simple and convenient.
C. They are cheaper than other meals. D. They are usually colorful.
31. What do we know from the second to last paragraph?
A. Light meals will stay popular for a while.
B. There is a change in attitude toward healthy eating.
C. One's eating habit shows their personality.
D. It's important to eat the right amount of good food.
D
Do you often listen to music at loud volumes (音量)?Over one billion (十亿) young people are at risk of hearing loss (失聪) because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes is harmful to your hearing.
The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels (dB 分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
Loud noise is harmful to the inner ears (内耳). Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells (听毛细胞) in our inner ears. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.
Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.
The World Health Organization said the“safe level" for most sounds is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 dB is roughly equal to (大约相当于) the noise of a subway.
32. Many young people are at risk of hearing loss because they________.
A. watch TV every day
B. listen to music every day
C. listen to loud noise in the subway
D. listen to loud noise for a long time
33. The sound level of a rock concert is about________.
A. 80 dB B. 85 dB
C. 100 dB D. 110 dB
34. What is loud noise harmful to?
A. The inner ears. B. The brain.
C. The heart. D. The eyes.
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Keep the Loud Volumes B. Loud Noise Is Harmful to Hearing
C. The Risk of Listening to Music D. Loud Noise Stops Ears from Working
