Stonehenge, an ancient circle of stones, is not only one of Britain’s most famous historical places but one of its greatest mysteries*. It is about 5000 years old, older than the pyramids of Giza. Every year, it attracts thousands of visitors to enjoy its beauty. They also wonder about how and why it was built.
The largest stones used to build Stonehenge weren’t from the area nearby. ______▲______. How did ancient people move these huge stones without machines to help them? No one knows the answer. But some people believe the stones were moved there in winter because the ground in winter in this area is usually full of ice and snow, making it easier to move the stones. And others think they were moved by boat, with the help of the nearby river Avon.
Why was Stonehenge built? Some scientists think ifs a burial* ground. There are 400 burial sites nearby and gold breastplates used in war have been found there. Others think Stonehenge was built by early astronomers*. Scientists believe that when a person stands in the center of Stonehenge, the change of seasons can be seen. Certain stones mark the location of the rising and setting moon in midwinter. Other stones mark the rising and setting sun in midsummer. Another popular idea is that Stonehenge was built for religious ceremonies. These ceremonies probably asked the gods to bring good weather for crops and to protect people from bad weather. No one is sure what Stonehenge was used for, but most agree the position of the stones must be for a special purpose.
In 2001, a group of volunteers from England tried to build another Stonehenge, but they couldn’t. “We don’t really know who built Stonehenge,” says Paul Stoker. “And perhaps we might never know, but we do know they must have been hard-working—and great planners!”
No matter how and why Stonehenge was built, it remains a mysterious man-ma&e wonder in the world.

Six hours of walking in space! On August 20, 2021, Chinese astronauts Liu Boming and Nie Haisheng did the second spacewalk of the Shenzhou XII mission. They set up equipment and lifted a camera outside the Tiangong space station.
Spacewalks can be dangerous. There is no air in space, of course. And ifs filled with harmful radiation*. But the spacesuits*, although they are huge and heavy, can protect astronauts.
A spacesuit is like a small space station. It has everything astronauts need when they carry out a spacewalk. For example, China’s Feitian spacesuits have six layers*. The innermost* layer collects astronauts* urine*. Then there are another four layers that help control the temperature and air pressure inside the suit. Spacesuits are filled with air, so they look like they5re puffed up. The sixth layer is made of special fibers* that protect astronauts from radiation.
Astronauts are connected to the space station with safety ropes. The suit has headphones and speakers for astronauts to communicate. There is also a mirror on the wrist. Astronauts can check their suits by looking at it.
The first Feitian suit was made in 2008. Zhai Zhigang wore it to carry out China's first spacewalk for about 19 minutes. The suits Chinese astronauts wear today are the second generation* of Feitian. It can support walks as long as eight hours and can be used more often. The first generation could only be used five times within two years, while the second generation can be used 15 times within three years. Each suit costs around 30 million yuan and it takes four months to make just one!

There’s a small house I visit from time to time. Ifs not the house that is special, but the person who lives inside is important to me.
I met Miss C about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten* teacher. I remember standing outside the classroom5looking into the window and wishing I was her student. Miss C created a safe place for her students and in her class, we could be whatever we wanted to be in that moment. I couldn’t remember how excited I was when my parents told me I could be her student when I was 4.
Since my childhood,I’ve always wanted to be a teacher like her. When I graduated,I couldn’t wait to invite Miss C to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw the happiness on my students5 faces when they sang the same songs that I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher,I was surprised at how she got along well with children. For years, Miss C volunteered in my classroom.
Over the years, we have shared almost everything in our life with each other. She asks me about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.
Now I am here because I would like to help pack the things before she sells her house. I bring up boxes from her basement*. We go through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written to her.I find some papers with the letters and I find my own name printed in green marker. Suddenly, my mind goes back to Room 3.
More than 40 years ago, Miss C sat on a chair while my classmates and I sat at her feet. We learned about the letters and their sounds. Now, Miss C sits on her rocking chair, and I find myself sitting at her feet. We talk for hours. I listen carefully because I know I still have more to learn from her.
Our friendship is one that neither one of us expected. But now I always tell my students that the best friendships often start at school with either students or teachers.
Educators know teaching is a job to help the development of young children. The lucky ones get to see what their students have done with their hard work. The exceptional* ones never leave their students’ hearts.

My father said it would be safer to stay at our community so my traveling plan for Christmas holiday has gone in the wind. How about you? Where did you go for your national holiday? What is your plan for your big holiday---the Spring Festival? I am looking forward to your reply.

Dear Tim,
Things are not bad here. During the national holiday, I visited The West Lake with my best friends. There were crowds of people visiting it. We enjoyed ourselves by going boating on the lake and enjoying lots of famous places of interest. As for the coming Spring Festival, I’m planning to learn some basic housework like cooking. I enjoy all kinds of dishes and I’d like to help out when my parents are busying with their work on weekdays. Besides, I’m going to get up early and do exercise with my family at the park every day. It’s really necessary for each of us to keep fit and healthy during this period. You mentioned that you were poor in math and didn’t show any interest in it. So I’d like offer you some useful ways and apps to you which may improve your math grade.
All the best!

Dear Simon,
Glad to hear from you. As you know,it's wonderful news that the “double reduction” policy has been carried out. However, students have to face the new challenge of making the best use of their time after the policy.
Thanks to the double reduction policy, the amount of homework is reduced greatly and students can finish homework more effectively. Also, students are expected to make good use of time at school. As is known, students aren’t allowed to take many after-school classes as they used to. As a result, they’re supposed to study hard on school days to get their grades improved. Besides, it is necessary to develop some healthy hobbies on weekends, such as playing basketball, collecting stamps, etc. What’s more, developing their independence by learning to do some basic housework is also a nice choice. Because of double reduction, students have less study pressure and more free time, they must learn some important life skills and be independent.
Yours,
Li Hua
