Al’s nephew Steve tk Brady alng when he and his friend Zach went n a vernight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled smething burning and they realized that lightning had set the wds n fire. Wind-blwn flame had leaped frm the tp f ne tree t anther. The lng dry summer had turned the frest int a tinderbx(火绒箱) and the thunderstrm wasn’t helping much. It had mre wind and lightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm. “Let’s g! We can make it back t the river we crssed tday.” Steve pulled Brady’s leash(皮带) and their heads dwn against the strng fire-wind, they hurried dwn the path they had fllwed earlier. The air was full f smke,and pine branches brke frm burning trees with a crisp sund. Steve kept his eyes n the rute. All they had t d was t make it dwn t the river…
    Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead f them lay a dense curtain f smke acrss the path. They’d never make it thrugh that. They wuld have t find anther escape rute. The dg was pulling at his leash trying t draw them away frm the smke. This was what Brady was trained t d, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed t him they were mving away frm the river.
    Brady lifted his head and smelled the smky wind. Suddenly, the dg ran away and disappeared. The bys yelled and shuted fr him,but he didn’t cme back.
    They had n chice but t leave him behind. Heartsick, Steve and Zach went up aslpe(斜坡). He culdn’t blame Brady fr panicking and escaping. He himself wanted t run even thugh he didn’t have a clue which way. They hadn’t gne far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came running tward him.
