Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their selfworth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often lifeanddeath affairs. In their singleminded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's selfrespect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.4What does this passage mainly talk about?ACompetition helps to set up selfrespect.BOpinions about competition are different among people.CCompetition is harmful to personal quality development.DFailures are necessary experiences in competition.5The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means ________.Athose who try their best to winBthose who value competition most highlyCthose who are against competition most stronglyDthose who rely on others most for success6What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”AOne's worth lies in his performance compared with others'.BOne's success in competition needs great efforts.COne's achievement is determined by his particular skills.DOne's success is based on how hard he has tried.7Which point of view may the author agree to?AEvery effort should be paid back.BFear of failure should be removed in competition.CWinning should be a lifeanddeath matter.DCompetition should be encouraged.CWe've certainly seen a dog nursing a wound, or a deer calling out in pain. But many animals suffer in silence. The most silent sufferers in the animal world may be fish.Do fish feel pain? A new study from the University of Liverpool has found that fish feel pain in a way that's "strikingly similar" to humans. For the study, Lynne Sneddon, from the university's Institute of Integrative Biology, reviewed the existing body of research 98 studies in all and concluded that they feel pain just as sharply as we do."When subject to a potentially painful event, fish show changes in behavior such as stopping feeding and reduced activity, which are prevented when a pain-relieving drug is provided. In fact, like us, they breathe heavily and stop eating when they're hurting. They will even rub the part of their body that aches." Sneddon notes in a university release. To understand pain in other species, scientists look at nociceptors (疼痛感受器), which send signals to the brain when the body is being damaged. Humans have them throughout their skin, bones and muscles. Nociceptors have also been found in many other species, including even those tiny fruit flies.Fish have the same means to detect pain signals and the equipment to receive them. Besides, the fishermen's opinion that fish feel no pain just doesn't add up from an evolutionary view. Pain is an efficient messenger that tells, us that we've got a problem. An animal that can't feel it won't get that memo (ER), even if it hurts itself."If we accept fish experience pain, then this has great significance for how we treat them," Sneddon says. "Care should be taken when handling fish to avoid damaging theirs sensitive skin and they should be humanely caught and killed."8What can we learn about fish?AThey are insensitive to pain. BThey are able to sense pain.CThey won't react to painkillers. DTheir brain is the first to send pain signals.9What will a fish do when its lips get hurt?AIt might rub its lips. BIt will keep its mouth open.CIt will swim around like crazy. DIt will keep eating to forget pain.10What is the significance of the study according to Sneddon?APeople will treat fish in a kinder way.BPeople can understand evolution better.CPeople can develop more drugs to save fish.DPeople will think of more ways to catch fish.11What does the underlined part "add up" probably mean?ADisappear. BPut forward.CMake sense. DHappen.D It was back in 2014. I learned I needed an operation to remove the tumor (肿瘤). Hearing the word “cancer” was the first shock, but knowing the surgeon would have to cut the front of my neck open was a lot to swallow. I was relieved to learn that thyroid (甲状腺) cancer can be treated if caught early, but 1 wasn’t thrilled it would mean a lifelong scar front and center on my neck.Back at home, I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I admired my neck, running my finger across a delicate gold chain I wore. Then came a tiny voice, “Mommy!” My then five year -old son. Jack, appeared in the mirror behind me. Our reflection was a big reality check. See, my son didn’t know I had been diagnosed (诊断) with the Big C, or that I was having an operation. I patiently explained my condition to him and told him I would have a scar on my neck after the operation.I never had any intentions of hiding the scar. I didn’t want my son to think my scar was something to be ashamed of. I was his role model and I needed to set a good example. Bad things can happen, but it’s how you deal with them that matters. The operation was successful. The recovery process, bearing it all, in the grocery store, out to dinner with family and on the summer camp pickup line, made me realize, if I could get through this phase (阶段),I could bear the scar of survival forever. The scar proves I looked at fear in the face and won.People will ask about my scar even though it’s a very thin. dull line five years later. That means I have the chance to educate others about thyroid cancer and how they should. self-check their necks and remind their doctors to do the same, at yearly physicals. To me, the scar is like a superhero stamp.12What’s the author worried about before the operation?AHer neck would look ugly. BThe tumor couldn’t be removed.CJack couldn’t take care of himself. DShe would have difficulty swallowing.13Why did the author decide to face the reality bravely?AShe didn’t care how people liked her.BShe realized she didn’t have other choice.CShe wanted to set a good example to her son.DShe felt lucky to have her cancer caught early.14How does the recovery process turn out?ARegretful. BStressful.CSurprising. DMeaningful.15What can be inferred about the author from the last paragraph?AShe has a better chance of education.BShe feels proud of what she has done.CShe has become an expert in cancer treatment.DShe has suffered [rom poor health for five years.  第二节(5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Many diseases and medical conditions are caused by things out of our control. Doctors urge us to eat healthy foods, get exercise, stop smoking and limit our alcohol intake. 16And it is free and easy. Smile! When we smile, the brain wiring gets altered. The chemicals that are released are more positive. Smiling is a first step in fighting physical and emotional stress and its sometimes harmful effects on human health. The main cause of heart attacks and strokes are blockages in blood vessels (血管).17The most common reason for these blockages is a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the arteries (大动脉). When we feel stressed or under pressure, our body releases many natural hormones (荷尔家) including adrenaline and cortisol. When we are stressed for a long period, these stress hormones are ever-present in our bodies. And that, medical researchers warn, may lead to health problems.18 However, they claim that when people are stressed for long periods of time, they may not make the best decisions about what to eat. They may overeat, smoke or drink too much alcohol. They may not get enough exercise or sleep. And all of these can lead to health problems.Dr. Choctkalingam says a smile may be one way to help. He tells his patients to smile 20 times an hour. To some, that might seem like a lot of smiling. Or some might even feel foolish . . . smiling for seemingly no reason. 19 It is not invasive (侵入的) like a surgical operation. It is free and it has no bad side effects.“Once we smile, we are relaxed. This relaxation directly lowers blood pressure, improves sugar levels in the blood. 20 .”And it just may provide a little extra protection to everyone^ heart health.ABut a smile does not involve drugs.BBut there is something else we can do.CExperts say we can control and even prevent them.DThese prevent blood from flowing to the heart or the brain.E.And they are the number one cause of death around the world.F.If we are smiling, we are breaking that link between stress and health.G.Researchers say the link between stress and heart disease is still unclear.第二部分语言运用 (共两节,满分30)第一节(15小题:每小题1分,满分15)阅读下面短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 There are lots of ways to raise awareness for a cause.Usuallythe   21   the idea isthe more it gets noticed. And that’s precisely why one   22   Frenchman has caught our attention.Baptiste Dubanchet is biking across Europesurviving   23   on discarded(丢弃的) food. The threemonth1,900mile journey from Paris to Warsaw is Dubanchet’s   24   of raising awareness of food waste in Europe and throughout the world. As you can imaginethe trip is no piece of cake. While restaurants   25   tons of food each yearmuch of it remains inaccessible because of    26   garbage containershealth regulationsor business policies.Only about one in ten places offered him food that would otherwise be discarded. For legal   27  most restaurants have a policy against   28   food waste.“Some people have even   29    their jobs by giving me food” Dubanchet said. What’s   30   interesting is the attitude various cities have toward Dubanchet’s cause.Berlin has been the easiest while the most difficult was the Czech town of Pilsen.Therehe had to   31   at some 50 different stores or restaurants before finding food. The challenge is all the more serious when you consider the   32   exercise required to bike from France to Poland.“I have to get food   33    because after all the biking I am tired and I need the    34  ” Dubanchet explained.“Is my stomach full or empty? I was a little girl again, rushing about and trying to get ready for school.“Hurry! You'll be late for school,” my mother called to me.“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my  books?” Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married. But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought,“There goes my diploma.”Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some ways. One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses.“That's the answer,” I said to myself. “Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.” Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said,“Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school?”I laughed,“There's no way! I'm 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled in classes in English and crafts.“This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。Paragraph 1:It was exciting to go to school again but                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Paragraph 2:Linda and I saw each other through the time.
