专练(6)
1.Teen Dating(青少年约会) can be fun if you are aware of its pros and cons(优缺点) and are also aware of the ways to protect yourself. There are a couple of suggestions you would like to know before you are out for dating.
Do not go out for dating with somebody whom you have seen only a few times and does not know much about him or her.
Before leaving on a date, know the exact plans for the evening and make sure a parent or friend knows these plans and what time to expect you home. Let your date know that you are expected to call or tell that person when you get in.
Similarly, if you leave a party with someone you do not know well, make sure you tell another person you are leaving and with whom. Ask a friend to call and make sure you arrive home safely.
No matter how good the person appears to you, trust your inner instincts(直感). If a situation makes you uncomfortable, try to stay calm and think of a way to remove yourself from the situation without letting your date realize what is going on in your mind.
Be aware of your decreased ability to react under the influence of alcohol or drugs and keep yourself in control when out for a date.
Always stay firm, straightforward and clear in your relationships, thoughts, decisions and judgments. Never let a doubt come to your mind or face when out for dating. If you are firm and clear in your communication, your date will always be careful in dealing with you.
You should think ahead about ways to be safe if you are in a dangerous or potentially dangerous relationship. Adults, like parents, teachers, counselors, can be trusted in such cases.

2.The World Health Organization warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. Nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating as well as lighting.
These findings show that the use of deadly fuels in inefficient stoves, space heaters or lights is to blame for many of these deaths.
WHO officials say indoor pollution leads to early deaths from stroke, heart and lung disease, childhood pneumonia(小儿肺炎) and lung cancer. Women and girls are the main victims. These diseases can often result from the burning of solid fuels. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste, crop waste and charcoal.
The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of households in sub-Saharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatermala and Peru, are also at risk.
Nigel Brace is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good cook-stoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way. There are already multiple technologies available for use in clean fuels. There is really quite an effective and reasonably low-cost alcohol stove made by Dometic (a Sweden-based company) that is now being tested out. LPG (Liquefield Petroleum Gas) cook is obviously widely available and efforts are under way to make those efficient. Another interesting development is electric induction stoves (电磁炉). WHO experts note that some new, safe and low-cost technologies that could help are already available. In India, you can buy an induction stove for about $8.00. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1.00.
But this, the agency says, is just a start. It is urging developing countries to use cleaner fuels and increase access(途径,方法) to cleaner and more modern cooking and heating appliances/devices.
1.What does the indoor pollution mainly result from?
A.Poisonous fuels. B.High technology. C.Space heaters. D.Solar energy.
2.How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?

3.It’s often said of British people that they are very aware of each other’s social rank. Britons can usually work out a fellow countryman’s background from the way they speak or dress, and may even treat them differently based on this. But although this may have been truer in the past than it is today, visitors to Britain say that they still notice it. The comic play Pygmalion by the Irish man George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), is a famous exploration of the importance of social rank in British society.
The main story of the play concerns a working class girl, Eliza Doolittle, a flower seller from London. Two upper class gentlemen try to see if they can get Doolittle to appear like an upper class lady after sending her for elocution lessons. Professor Henry Higgins, a language expert, says it can be done; his friend Colonel Pickering says that it’s impossible. Even so, Higgins sets out to teach Eliza how to “speak properly”.
Of course Eliza isn’t a lump of clay; she has her own will. She can see that it’s in her best interest to go along with Higgin’s plan to “improve herself”. She wants to be able to sell flowers in a shop rather than on the street. Still, Eliza’s willfulness means that it’s a bumpy(坎坷的)ride for everyone.
At the beginning of fourth act, the characters are at home after a ball(舞会), at which Eliza proved that a flower girl can pass herself off as a lady after all. She was a triumph at the ball, and Higgins has won his bet.
But what happens next? Eliza has her future to worry about. She may be able to fool the upper class into thinking she’s one of them, but she isn’t really one of them.
Shaw seems to be telling us that social rank is about more than the way someone talks---it’s about wealth and privilege. The whole experiment proves the idea that accents and classes are very superficial. The way one speaks and dresses are only markers of class. The class system itself, however, is something completely different.

B.She is unwilling to participate in the experiment at first.
C.She is thought of as a respectable upper-class lady at the ball.
D.She is afraid that true background will be known by other people.
4.What message did Shaw intend to convey in Pygmalion according to the text?
A.People should try to improve their accents.
B.One can enter the upper class after receiving training.
C.The way someone speaks makes a big difference to their social status.
D.A person’s social rank can’t truly be judged by the way they look and talk.
4. At the end of a long day, it's tempting to dive into your social feeds or Netflix queue the minute you've finished eating. But back before screens took up all our free time, an after-dinner walk was a popular activity. "Italians have been walking after meals for centuries," says Loretta DiPietro, a professor at the George Washington University, "so it must be good."
Research backs this up. One study co-authored by DiPietro found that when older adults at risk for type-2 diabetes(糖尿病) walked for 15 minutes after a meal, they had steady blood sugar levels in the hours afterwards. The human digestive system turns food into glucose(葡萄糖). After a meal, glucose floods a person's bloodstream. Insulin(胰岛素) helps pull that glucose into cells. But for people with impaired insulin activity, too much glucose can remain in the blood, which can cause heart disease and other health problems.
What good does walking do? "The muscles we use to walk use glucose as energy, drawing it out of circulation and therefore reducing how much is floating around," says Andrew Reynolds, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Otago. Reynolds conducted a study of people with type-2 diabetes and found that just 10 minutes of walking after a meal helped control their blood sugar levels. "We saw the biggest differences with walking after dinner time," compared to other times of the day, Reynolds says. "The production of insulin in response to a meal tends to decrease later in the day. Getting up and moving around at that time was very effective," he says.
A little post-meal movement may also aid digestion. But more isn't necessarily better when it comes to post-eating exercise. "Exercising muscles pull more of the blood flow their way during activity, and the GI tract(消化道) gets relatively less," says Sheri Colberg-Ochs, a researcher at Old Dominion University. "That actually slows down the digestion of food in your stomach during the activity. Anything but really intense exercise would probably work equally well."
So make like the Italians and head out for a walk after your next meal. Your TV and the Internet will still be there when you get home.

3.What is wrong with really intense exercise according to Colberg-Ochs?
A.It damages the GI tract. B.It delays digestion.
C.It causes breathing problems. D.It increases blood sugar levels.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.The health tips of Italians. B.The danger of long-term sitting.
C.The health benefits of post-meal walks. D.The causes of type-2 diabetes.
5.'There’s no place like home.' This English saying has much truth in it: the best place to be is surrounded by our treasured possessions and our loved ones and with a roof over our head. And for many young adults, it’s the only affordable place to stay; somewhere where they can receive first-class service from mum and dad. But this comes at a price!
In some countries, it’s quite traditional for people in their late teens and early 20s to live at home with their parents, but in other places, flying the nest to start their own independent life is very desirable. But there’s been a growing trend,in the UK at least, for young people to return home to live — or not to leave home at all.
A survey by a price comparison website found that 18% of adult children in the UK said they were moving back home because of debt, compared with 8% last year. More young people had lost their jobs, and others couldn’t afford their rent compared with the previous year. So, it’s easy to see why they’re increasingly becoming home birds.
The BBC's Lucy Hooker explains that many returning adult children enjoy home comforts. But for the ‘hoteliers’,that’s mum and dad, the survey found the average cost to them has gone up sharply, and that they are sacrificing luxuries and holidays to look after their 'big kids'. Emma Craig from Money supermarket says "they're trying to look after their children more. If your child comes home and you see them struggling financially, you feel more awkward asking them for rent or to contribute. It tugs on your heartstrings more.”
With parents splashing out around £1,886 on takeaway food, buying new furniture and upgrading their Wi-Fi for the benefit of their offspring, it's easy for the returning children to put their feet up and make themselves at home. That's before they learn a home truth — that one day it might be their own kids who'll be checking into the hotel of mum and dad!

C.Flying the net is becoming popular at present.
D.Home birds take it for granted to live with their parents.
6. Plagiarism is the act of representing another person’s words or ideas as your own. The offense may be as small as a sentence copied from a book. Or it may be as extensive as a whole paper copied—or bought—from somebody else.
Intellectual dishonesty is nothing new. The only difference now is that the Internet has made it much simpler to steal other people’s work. Yet the same technology that makes it easy to find information to copy also makes it easier to identify plagiarism.
Teachers can use online services that compare papers to thousands of others to search for copied work. The teacher gets a report on any passage that is similar enough to suspect plagiarism. These services are widely used. Turnitin.com, for example, says it is used in more than 100 countries and examines more than 130,000 papers a day.
Professional writers who plagiarize can be taken to civil court and ordered to pay damages. In schools, the punishment for cheating could be a failing grade on the paper or in the course. Some schools expel(驱逐) plagiarists for a term; others, for a full academic year. Some degrees have even been withdrawn after a school later found that a student had plagiarized.
Accidental plagiarism can sometimes result from cultural differences.
At Indiana University in Bloomington, 60 percent of students who use the Office of Writing Tutorial Services are non-native English speakers. The director, Joanne Vogt, says some have no idea that copying from published works is considered wrong. She says students from China, for example, may think they are insulting readers if they credit other sources. They believe that educated readers should already know where the information came from.
The more you give credit, the less you risk accusations of plagiarism. Any sentence taken directly from a source should appear inside quotation marks. And even if you put those sentences into your own words, you should still give credit to where you got the information.
1.According to the passage, what is the role of the Internet in Plagiarism?

7.Children may not be storing coins in piggy banks for much longer; with the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is moving digital.
To reflect this trend, a number of mobile budgeting apps for children has sprung up worldwide. These apps offer a simple money management service for children, often for a monthly subscription fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children’s accounts, set limits and monitor transactions, while children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card that works like a debit card. The apps suggest minimum ages ranging from six to nine for the prepaid card.
The companies behind the apps argue that in an increasingly cashless society, they can be a valuable way of teaching young children about money. Two thirds of adults globally are financially illiterate, according to survey, and one in four teenagers are unable to make even simple decisions on everyday spending. These apps aim to overcome this and teach children financial concepts, such as budgeting, interest rates and income.
Haglund believes the app can teach responsible spending habits, whereas schools tend to focus more on economic theory. “You don't become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It’s more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents’ money when you’re 6 to 12 years old,” he says. But Winter, warns that while digital tools can help there needs to be a more structured approach to financial education. The area should “have regular, dedicated, classroom time and be taught as an independent subject,” she said. One concern is that introducing digital money apps to young children could help to encourage irresponsible spending habits. “If children don’t have a good foundation in financial capability, there’s a risk that money apps could be seen as developing bad habits” says Winter. However, Haglund says children are protected from this as parents can monitor their spending habits and none of the services offer an overdraft so children cannot go into debt.

In a survey of 104, 825 students from 29 counties nationwide in 2016, 33 percent of students said they had experienced bully and 4.1 percent were frequently victimized(受害), they got injured mentally and physically.
“In addition, the regulations state regardless of how many times one side bullies another--repeatedly, accidentally or one time-each incident will be given strict attention. That can help prevent bullying incidents in school.” she added.
Students who conduct minor offenses should be dealt with by their school and apologize to the victims. while those who cause obvious physical or mental harm should be sent to the police.
"It's a school’s main responsibility to deal with bullying. All primary and middle schools should set up a committee for such problems, "said He Xiuchao. Schools should also hire (雇佣) people with a legal (法律) background as vice-principals to take charge of all legal affairs.

9. Garbage sorting has become a hot issue around China, especially after Shanghai began carrying out a regulation on July 1.
Beijing has thus been expected to follow suit. The current regulation gives garbage sorting responsibilities to government departments, property management groups and other organizations. It also gives rules for companies, outlining how they’re responsible for waste collection, transportation and treatment. Only individuals are not subject to responsibilities.
The long-awaited revision will soon change the situation. "Taking out the trash without sorting it properly will be illegal," said Sun Xinjun, director of the Beijing Commission of Urban Management. In Shanghai, violators are now fined up to 200 yuan for trash-sorting violations(违背). The maximum fine in Beijing will not be less than that, he said.
The Beijing city government first set out to promote garbage sorting in 2009. Authorities have since called on citizens to sort their household waste into four types-recyclable waste, kitchen trash, dangerous waste and others—and leave it in a corresponding(相应的) dustbin or trash can. Blue-colored dustbins indicate items within are recyclable, green represents kitchen trash, red corresponds to dangerous materials and grey to other waste.
To promote the awareness of garbage sorting and expand the base of participants, authorities have employed workers to help residents on the spot. With intelligent devices, those who throw in recyclable waste at given sites will be rewarded with bonus points, which can be used to buy daily goods. At some communities, there are no color-coded dustbins. Instead, a scheduled garbage collection service is offered to help improve the environment. In other communities, workers offer a door-to-door service to collect recyclables or kitchen waste.
Beijing Environmental Sanitation Engineering Group has been promoting new garbage sorting facilities such as recycling cabinets and smart kitchen waste trash cans since 2016, Xinhua News Agency reported.

10.Students decide to take a job while being in university because of two reasons: on the one hand, they need money; on the other hand, they want to experience something new and they want to see what working means.
But is it good to take a job while you are a university student? There are both advantages and disadvantages if we were to answer this question. If we were to think about the advantages, we could mention the ones I have just discussed. Having a job at an early age helps us gain experience, which will be very useful to our later life. We may become financially independent and don’t need to ask our parents for money each time we want to go downtown with our friends, or spend the holiday at the seaside or in the mountains.
However, students who take a job might have problems in spending enough time on their study. If they work during the day, they may have to be absent from their classes, and if they work at night they will feel tired the next day. They may choose to stay at home, resting. What’s worse, some students may even get bored with study.
Well, this fact happens every now and then, but there are cases when well-prepared students take a part-time job but at the same time they make time for study, too. And they have good results. Their case is a good example to follow among the students who decide to work while being in university. Anyway, we need to keep in mind that study is the most important job for a student.
