Rdgers was brn in 1897, in Meridian. His mther died when he was yung, and Rdgers spent the next few years with relatives. He then went t live with his father wh wrked n the Ohi Railrad and had married a new wife.
By age 13, Rdgers had twice rganized traveling shws. The first time, he brrwed his sister-in-law's bed sheets t make a tent. Upn his return t Meridian, he paid fr the sheets with mney he had made frm his shw! And nt lng after the secnd trip, his father fund Rdgers his first railrad jb as a brakeman.
In 1924, Rdgers gt tuberculsis (肺结核). The disease temprarily ended his jb but gave him the chance t get back t his first lve, entertainment. He rganized a traveling rad shw and perfrmed acrss the Sutheast until a hurricane destryed his tent. He returned t railrad, wrking as a brakeman, but his illness eventually cst him his jb. He mved t Arizna thinking the dry climate might lessen the disease.
In April 1927 Rdgers perfrmed fr the first time n the Asheville's radi statin. Mnths later, Rdgers recruited a grup and they secured a weekly shw n the radi statin as the Rdgers Entertainers. A clumnist said, “Whever that fellw is, he either is a winner r he is ging t be.” In Nvember, Rdgers recrded fur sngs, Ben Dewberry’s Final Run , Mther Was a Lady , Away ut n the Muntain and T fr Texas. In the fllwing years, “T fr Texas" sld nearly half a millin cpies.

Wild vlunteers add at least $1.5 billin in ttal t the harvest fr six f the crps, a new study estimates.
“T me, the big surprise was that we fund s many wild bees even in intense prductin areas where much f the prduce in the USA is grwn, says Rachael Winfree, a pllinatin eclgist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N. J.
That means threats t wild bees culd deplete prfits even when farms raise hneybees, the researchers reprted n July 29 in Prceedings f the Ryal Sciety. Bth hneybees, which aren’t native t the United States, and wild pllinatrs such as bumblebees face dangers including pesticides (杀虫剂).
T see what, if anything, wild native bee species cntribute, researchers checked bee visits t flwers at 131 cmmercial farm fields acrss the United States and part f Canada. On the ther hand, the researchers als calculated t what extent the number f bee visits limited prductin. These intensive farms with plenty f fertilizer, water and ther resurces ften shwed signs f reaching a pllinatr limit, meaning fields didn’t have enugh hneybees t get the maximum prductin, and vlunteer wild bees were adding t the ttal. “Wild bees dn’t seem t help Califrnia’s rchards (果园),but based n rchards in Michigan and Pennsylvania, sme $ 1. 06 billin f apples depends n native pllinatrs,” the researchers say. Watermelns, particularly in Flrida, get an estimated $146 millin benefit, and sweet cherries $ 145 millin.

“It has all the functin f a plastic straw that everyne has been using,” says Maxim Gelmann, funder f Strdles, the startup. The straws, made by an Italian cmpany that als prduces regular pasta, are the same shape and size as a standard plastic straw.
Unlike a paper straw, they dn’t taste like wet paper; they dn’t change the flavr f the drink. They last at least an hur, and lnger in clder drinks. If yu’re nursing a drink fr hurs and the pasta eventually sftens, yu can chse t eat it. The raw straw is als eatable, and Gelmann says that sme peple snack n them.
A handful f ther pasta-straw startups als exist, thugh Strdles is hping t feature itself with a smther, mre plastic-like material and its branding.
It’s mre expensive t make than a plastic straw, but at large vlumes, it can cmpete with the cst f paper straws. Because f the cming ban, “N ne really cmpares us with plastic anymre,” Gelmann says. “They cmpare us with paper straw prices, which makes my argument much easier and my expectatin brighter.”
Other alternatives, like bamb r stainless steel, are mre expensive and a less elegant slutin; sme bars say that custmers dn’t trust the idea that stainless steel straws can be fully sanitized (消毒). Anther ptin—a plastic-like eatable straw made frm seaweed—may be mre f a cmpetitr.
