Winter Adventures Await in the Canadian Rockies
Alberta is the top destination for the outdoor wonderland experiences and the chilly winter is the hottest season of the year for you to adventure in the most beautiful, magical, powerful places on the planet and keeps you coming back. Here are tips for experiencing some of the best adventures winter has to offer in Alberta.
    Hit the slopes
Set deep in what's widely regarded as the world's most scenic ski area at Banff National Park, the Lake Louise Ski Resort invites everyone from first-timers to advanced shredders to its 4, 200 acres of skiable area.
    Climb a frozen waterfall
Jasper National Park, part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage site, has an area of 6, 759 square miles of mountains, glacial peaks and forests. Rivers lead to steep falls, which freeze into ice climbs as early as October and valley climbs form just a month later. While experienced climbers can cope with the frozen waterfalls without a guide, beginners need not shy away: basic training courses are offered for free.
Blaze a trail in the snow
The Athabasca Glacier is an ancient relic among the massive Columbia Ice field. While it's recommended to access the glacier only with an experienced guide, the area surrounding it offers cross-country snowshoeing trails that lead to it. No matter your mode of transport, this area is one of the darkest in Canada, which means the night sky provides a perfect backdrop for the dancing northern lights--so dress extra warm and struggle through the deep snow to glimpse one of nature's most colorful wonders.
    Hidden gem
The month-long Snow-Day festival takes over Banff National Park each January. Cultural and sporting events, including ice carving and the Big Bear ski and rail competition, unfold throughout the event, but the real treat comes at the start, when live music fills the streets during the party, and a beer garden and ice fire pit keep the tourists warm.
The most splendid winter sunset can be seen throughout Alberta. As Mike Libecki, a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, says, Alberta is one that keeps him coming back.
1.Which would be a destination for those who are eager to enjoy polar lights?
A.Banff National Park. B.Jasper National Park.
C.The Athabasca Glacier. D.The Lake Louise Ski Resort.
2.When is the best time for tourists to visit Banff National Park?
A.In early October. B.In late November.
C.At the beginning of January. D.In the middle of December.
    3.What is Alberta most probably?
A.It is a region full of tourist resources in Canada.
B.It is the highest peak of the Canadian Rockies.
C.It is a beautiful village surrounded by attractions.

Mr. Buxton taught me Shakespeare in 10th grade. We were reading Macbeth. Mr. Buxton, who probably had better things to do, nonetheless agreed to meet one night to go over the text line by line. The first thing he did was point out the repetition of themes. For example, the reversals of things.
What Mr. Buxton didn’t tell me was what the play meant. He left the conclusions to me. The situation was much the same with my religious studies teacher in 11th grade, Mr. Flanders, who encouraged me to have my own relationship with the Gospels.
High school was followed by college, where I read Umberto Eco’s The Role of the Reader, in which it is said that the reader completes the text, that the text is never finished until it meets this voracious (渴求的) and engaged reader. The open texts, Eco calls them. In college, I read some of the great Europeans and Latin Americans: Borges and Kafka, Genet and Beckett, Artaud, Proust-open texts all. I may not have known why Kafka’s Metamorphosis is about a guy who turns into a bug: but I knew that some said cockroach, and others, European dung beetle.
There are those critics, of course, who insist that there are right ways and wrong ways to read every book. No doubt they arrived at these beliefs through their own adventures in the stacks. And these are important questions for philosophers of every stripe. And yet I know only what joy and enthusiasm about reading have taught me, in bookstores new and used.
There is not now and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl of literary meaning in all cases.
Supposing the truth is not hard, fast, masculine, simple, direct? You could spend a lifetime thinking about this sentence, and making it your own. In just this way, the freedom to see literature, history, truth unfolding ahead of me like a book whose spine has just now been cracked.
4.When did the author begin to read Shakespeare’s work?
A.In primary school. B.In secondary school.
    C.In 11th grade. D.In college.
5.What can we know about The Role of the Reader from the text?
A.It was written by the readers.
B.It is about a guy turning into a bug.
C.Some great Europeans and Latin Americans wrote it together.
D.It insists that the reader completes the text.
6.What is the main reason of the author loving reading?
    A.Being an excellent student.
    B.Mr. Buxton’s teaching method.
C.The joy and enthusiasm from his reading.
D.His admiration for literature masters like Shakespeare.
7.What can be inferred about the author from the text?
A.He has a preference for the open texts.
    B.Shakespeare is his favorite.
C.He is naturally talented in reading.
D.He is also a famous literary critic.
    C
Nature is like a great magician, performing wonders on Earth. One of them is the Amazon rainforest, the world’s largest and home to millions of plants and animals. Nicknamed “the lungs of our planet”, it generates about one-fifth of Earth’s oxygen. However, this wonderful natural wonder is currently in danger.
Thousands of fires have broken out in Brazil, endangering much of the rainforest. These blazes have lasted several weeks and are believed to be the “most intense” in almost a decade, according to BBC News.
The Amazon has seen a large number of fires in 2019. Between January and August, there were over 74,000 fires the highest number since 2013, the BBC reported.
Forest fires are common during the dry season, which runs from July to October. They are usually caused by natural events, such as lightning strikes. However, most of the fires this year are believed to be caused by farmers, who use fire as a traditional part of tropical agriculture to clean land, reported CNN.
The disaster has raised concern around the world. The Amazon rainforest is important for preventing climate change, said the BBC, absorbing millions of tons of carbon annually. When trees are cut down or burned, the rainforest’s capacity(能力)to absorb carbon is reduced.
Brazilian climate expert Carlos Nobre told Reuters he’s worried. If more than 20 percent of the ecosystem is destroyed, the Amazon rainforest could reach a "tipping point(临界点)where the thick jungle will turn into a tropical savannah(大草原).
Nobre warned that it is not far off, with between 15 and 17 percent of the rainforest having already been destroyed.
The Brazilian government has sent soldiers to fight the fires. Many people have offered their support and called for recovery efforts. For example, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said he wanted to donate money and US Actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s environmental charity, Earth Alliance, created a donation fund to help deal with the crisis.
The public are also encouraged to donate to charities concerned with rainforest preservation(保护). “Every little bit helps in a tragic situation like this,” commented Gizmodo.
    8. The underlined word “intense” in Para.2 probably means _______.
    A. natural B. fierce C. common D. unexpected
    9. What is the main cause of forest fires in the Amazon rainforest this year?
    A. Lightning strikes. B. Hot weather.
    C. Agricultural activities. D. Garbage left by tourists.
    10. What was Nobre worried about in the article?
    A. Global temperatures will rise.
    B. The Amazon rainforest is close to disappearing.
    C. Animals in the Amazon rainforest are under threat.
    D. It will take decades for the Amazon rainforest to recover.
    11. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
    A. What the Brazilian government has done to fight fires.
    B. Celebrities who care about rainforest preservation.
    C. The possible future of the Amazon rainforest.
    D. Efforts made to save the Amazon rainforest.
    D
Art—no matter whether you choose to create it yourself or simply observe and enjoy it—is a relaxing and inspiring activity for many people. However, the particular benefits of artistic expression go much further.
Studies suggest that art therapy (疗法) can be very valuable in treating issues such as depression and anxiety disorder. It is a great way to express your emotions without words, process complex feelings and find relief.
You don’t necessarily have to see a therapist in order to experience some of the benefits of artistic expression. There are many simple activities you can try from the comfort of your home such as art journaling, drawing, making collections, sculpting with clay, etc. It doesn’t matter what media you choose. The only thing that matters is that you feel comfortable using it. Human beings are naturally creative, and all you need to do to complete an art therapy activity successfully is to be with yourself and your emotions. Once you free your creativity, your inner artist will quickly wake up.
However, working with a licensed therapist also has its advantage because a professional can tailor each activity to your own needs. If the activities are done in a group, they are excellent for building healthy connections with other people, which may be very helpful if you are fighting depression.
Experts agree that art therapy has many benefits, from promoting your self-respect, and providing you a safe outlet to relieve your emotions, to giving you a sense of control over your life and helping you to get to know and understand yourself better. During the process of art creation, you will be taking yourself on a journey of self-discovery that will help you get rid of emotional roadblocks, and learn how to communicate with yourself and others.
12.What is art therapy used for?
    A.Learning drawing skills.
    B.Expressing art with words.
    C.Preventing physical diseases.
    D.Improving mental health.
    13.To finish a successful art therapy, you’d better ________.
    A.have a gift for art
    B.have a strong will
    C.be honest with yourself
    D.hold back your emotions
14.Why are group activities needed when dealing with depression?
    A.To set an example.
    B.To promote communication.
    C.To build up friendships.
D.To wake up the inner artist.
15.What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.Explain the advantages of art therapy.
B.Give some details about art creation.
    C.Provide some advice for readers.
    D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What happened? How did the web become a hell that is fun, ruled by idiots and thieves? 16. When Steve Jobs launched the iPhone in 2007, “the internet” and “real life” were still separate fields; people had to “get online” to move from one to the other. But a decade later, smartphones in hands, the distinction had disappeared. 17.
The people behind the internet continued to believe that most users were versions of themselves, “white, male, age 25 to 34, college-educated”. 18. The average internet user became poorer, older, less white and less likely to speak English. Seen through this lens(镜片), crying over the decline of “the internet” is a bit like complaining that a favorite bar has been overrun by strangers.
    19. And the cultural influence of those early American users is steadily weakening. Perhaps the most typical example of this is the rise of TikTok, an app that lets people create and share short, goofy videos. It is owned by ByteDance, a giant Chinese startup.
TikTok is unusual. When your home market is small or poor, it is hard to build global firms. All the same, even if the business of the internet remains fastened in California, its culture is expanding all the time. There is no longer such a thing as “the internet”, but many internets, belonging to many people, distinct but overlapping. 20.
A.It is not dying, just rebirthing.
B.In reality, things are entirely contrary.
C.The key is the iPhone, which affects our life greatly.
D.The smartphone, which brought the internet into everyday life.
    E. Suddenly anyone could be online --- everywhere and all the time.
    F. It is the iPhone that should answer for the cultural influence of America.
    G. Although America developed the internet, just 6% of its users are American.

So, this looks essentially the way the artist intended."Bachor says, "That kind of staying power just 28 me so much."

    第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
One spring morning many years ago, I had been prospecting for gold along Coho Creek. As I emerged from a forest, I froze in my tracks. No more than 20 paces away in the bog(泥塘)was a huge Alaskan timber wolf-caught in one of Trapper George's traps.
Old George had died the previous week of a heart attack, so the wolf was lucky. Confused and frightened at my approach, the wolf backed away, pulling hard on the trap chain. Then I noticed something else: It was a female, and her teats(奶头)were full of milk. Somewhere there was a den(窝)of hungry pups waiting for their mother.
From her appearance, I guessed that she had been trapped only a few days. That meant her pups were probably still alive. But I suspected that if I tried to release the wolf, she would turn aggressive and try to tear me to pieces.
So I decided to search for her pups instead and began to look for incoming tracks that might lead me to her den. Fortunately, there were still a few remaining patches of snow.
The tracks led a half mile through the forest, and I finally spotted the den. There wasn't a sound inside. Wolf pups are shy and cautious, and I didn't have much hope of tricking them outside. But I had to try. So I began copying the squeak(吱吱声)of a mother wolf calling her young. No response. A few moments, later, after I tried again, four tiny pups appeared. I extended my hands, and they tentatively(试探性地)suckled at my fingers. Perhaps hunger had helped overcome their natural fear. Then, one by one, I placed them in a bag and headed back.
When the mother wolf spotted me, she stood straight. Possibly picking up the scent(气味)of her young, she let out a sorrow-stricken crying. I released the pups, and they raced to her. Within seconds, they were slurping(啜食)at her belly.
    注意:
    1. 所续写的短文的词数应为150左右;
    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

    19.前段的最后一句提到:为“互联网”的衰落而哭泣,有点像抱怨一家最受欢迎的酒吧被陌生人占满了。空后提到:早期美国用户的文化影响力正在逐渐减弱。那么,该空应该描述了美国在网络发展方面的窘境,结合选项,G选项(尽管美国发展了互联网,但只有6%的用户是美国人)符合语境。故选G。
    20.本空需填入对上文进行承接的句子。根据上段关键信息可知,早期美国用户的文化影响在弱化。本段中再次重申,网络文化在不断地向世界各地延伸。并指出“互联网不再是原来的‘那一个互联网’,而是属于许多人的互联网群……”,因此A项符合情境:这不是死亡,而是重生。故选A。

    第三部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
    第一节(满分15分)
An English poetry writing contest was held last Sunday at our school. All the students and English teachers participated in the contest, submitting one or two pieces of writing about “youth”. In total, 80 excellent works, among which three won the first prize, were picked out and exhibited in the Library Hall for appreciation. Expressing the inner most thoughts in a few lines, students were impressed with the magical power of words through the beautiful literary art of poetry. Many of them said they even had a better understanding of life as well as themselves.

    第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
    Paragraph 1
What next? I wondered. So tender were the pups that it was impossible for them to resist danger without mother’s protection. Hence, I made up my mind to release her. But how? A good idea occurred to me. I went back to my truck and fetched an iron bar. Using a rock as the supporting point, I unlocked the chain and set the wolf free. Realizing my rescue, the wolf kept still to cooperate. After gaining freedom, she howled at me with her head low, showing her gratitude. Then, the mother wolf led her pups to go forward, disappearing in the forest.
    Paragraph 2
Four years later, I returned to Coho Creek. The previous gold searching spot had been transformed into a natural wildlife reserve. As I paced, the sound of my footsteps was accompanied only by the gracefully waving leaves. All of a sudden, a beautiful mid-sized pool came into my sight, with a group of wolves scattered around, licking water or lying on the grass leisurely. Noticing my approaching, the wolves gathered. I was seized by a strong sense of horror, my palms sweating. Meanwhile, a leading wolf came forwards, howling at me with her head low. The memory crossed my mind. It was the wolf that I saved years ago. Before long, she turned back, leading her offspring to the forest. How amazing to see them again!
