    2.进行合理推断对文章有了详细而全面的理解之后,就要按照文章内容和上下文的逻辑关系,作出推理判断。阅读理解涉及词汇、语法、句型、段落结构、文化背景等各方面知识。答题时,要领会句子之间的逻辑关系,特别是相邻句子之间的关系,这样有利于理解全文。表示逻辑关系的标志词是连接词、副词、代词、介词短语、关系词、插入语等,通读时应特别注意。
    如:if,because,though,as,which,it,and,but,however,therefore,so,for example,so that,so…that,on the one hand…,on the other (hand)…等。它们在上下文中具有条件、原因、让步、指代、递进、对比、列举、结果、目的、承上启下等作用,正确理解并掌握这些词汇的作用,对做阅读理解题是大有好处的。
    3.猜测推敲生词阅读短文时,常常会遇到一些生词。这时,考生要沉着、冷静,细心思考。首先要把整段、整篇文章看完,通过对全篇短文的理解,就有可能猜测出生词的大意。另外,还可以从含有生词句子的上下文,以及句子和段落之间的关系来判断、理解生词以求获得其真正含义。
    猜测生词的另一种方法是,根据构词法推测。遇到生词后,可从构词法角度分析判断生词。例如: inexpensive一词,其中词根expensive的含义是“贵的”。前缀in-是“不”的意思,因此可以猜测此词词义为“不贵的,便宜的”。
    4.利用常识解题多了解一些常识性知识有利于阅读理解。如果对文章的相关背景有所了解,读起文章来一定既省时又省力。因此,在学习过程中,了解各方面的背景知识是十分重要的。考生应了解下列知识:(1)著名作家、艺术家及其主要作品;
    (2)了解西方社会风土人情、社交活动、新年、圣诞节活动、宗教信仰、风俗习惯等;(3)多看新闻联播、世界各地和各类英语讲座等节目;(4)使用各种工具书,查阅各类名词、术语、重大事件等;(5)熟记常用的缩略词语。
    5.正确理解题干纵观历年中考试题,阅读理解试题一般有以下几种题型:一是直接回答who,whom,which,what,where,when,why,how等疑问词引起的细节问题;二是猜测词义题;三是推理判断题;四是综合概括题。在做阅读理解题时,一定要仔细看完、看清楚试题要求再作答,特别要注意NOT,TRUE,EXCEPT等词。有时,要先看题后阅读文章,带着问题去读短文,可缩短阅读时间,效果也许会更好。
    总之,阅读理解题是中考试题中非常重要的一项内容,占有举足轻重的地位。如果考生按上述答题方法去做,再做些适当的练习,一定会在阅读理解题上取得比较理想的成绩。

    【答案详解】26.B 词义猜测题。根据文意和这个单词所在的句子“which was the better animal.(哪一个是更棒的动物)”,可推测disputing是“争论”的意思。play玩;quarrel争吵,争论;complain抱怨;decide决定。故应选B。
27.B 细节理解题。根据短文第三段“Ah! But your skin is not nearly so thick as mine,” replied the crocodile.“No knife or tooth can cut through it.”

故应选A。
(B)They say that “travel is the best teacher” and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake (1587—1641).His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, not only encouraged a love of travelling among Chinese people but provided important scientific information about the country’s land and geography.Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family, Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 18, however, Xu’s father died and so, it seemed, did his travelling dreams. He now was responsible for the family farm and taking care of his 60-year-old mother as tradition required. But his mother had different ideas.Understanding her son’s love of travel and valuing the knowledge he could get from such experiences, this modern-thinking woman refused to keep her son at home. She agreed that Xu could travel for three months every year, when there was less farm work.So at the age of twenty and with his mother’s support, Xu set off for the first time, leaving behind not only his mother but his new wife as well.He would repeat this goodbye each year for most of the next 30 years.During this time, he travelled throughout the Ming kingdom, carefully studying the lands he passed through and recording his experiences and many discoveries in a diary. This diary, which once had over 500,000 words, would eventually become The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake.Although rich, Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world. Many of his trips were to hard-to-reach mountain areas, and through wild forests where few people lived. His willingness to face hardships came at a cost however.Progress was slow and tiring and he was frequently sick, robbed and beaten during his journeys.Sadly Xu became seriously ill during his last and longest journey, a 4-year trip through the southwest of China. He died in 1641, soon after returning to his hometown for the last time. When his diary was finally printed years after his death, much of it had been destroyed or lost.Although incomplete, it still made Xu a travelling legend around the world.

Instead, he is a computer-created head that appears, when needed, on students’ computer or phone screens. His name is Bill.Created by technology company Smart Machines, Bill is able to show human-like behavior. He is designed to teach a special program about environmental-friendly power created by the sun and wind. This program, started in 2005, used to be taught by human teachers.Just like human teachers, Bill is able to immediately respond to the students’ questions and opinions about the topic. Thanks to computer cameras, he is also able to see and react to students’ physical actions. For example, if a student smiles at Bill, he responds by smiling back. This two-way exchange helps get the students’ attention.More importantly, it allows the program developers to improve Bill’s behavior and knowledge base when needed. The program has been a great success, according to Smart Machines spokesman Robert Frost. Frost says, “What is interesting to me is the children’s reaction to Bill.He really captures their attention.” Frost thinks kids don’t find the experience of being taught by smart machines as strange as older people because they have grown up in a time of computers and smart phones. It is doubtful, however, that human educators will lose their jobs to Bill any time soon. For one, this talking head’s knowledge base is not large.More importantly, even the smartest computer programs can’t guess and react to all the unexpected situations that educators face daily.Bill’s future might be as a “personal tutor”, providing kids with one-on-one help for different subjects and topics.

(B)A few centuries ago, people looked at the birds and wondered what it would be like to fly like them. There were stories of heroes who stuck bird feathers on their arms and flew up into the sky.About 500 years ago, some people dreamed a different dream.Instead of flying up to the sky, they dreamed of falling from the sky!In the 15th century, Italian inventors designed a cone-shaped(锥形)object that was supposed to bring a man down safely from a great height. The operator held on to a handle straps tied to his waist. This was the first known design for a parachute(降落伞).Even the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci drew a type of parachute. His parachute design was in the shape of a pyramid( 金字塔 ).Other inventors also drew their own designs for a parachute.Unluckily, these were only designs on paper and no one tested them.A Croatian inventor named Fausto Veranzio looked at Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute design and replaced the pyramid shape with one that looked like a sail from a ship. When Veranzio was 65 years old,he fell ill.Thinking he would not live longer, he decided to try out his parachute invention. He built his parachute using wood and cloth.Tying his invention to his waist, he jumped off the tall bell tower in his city.He landed safely. He was supposedly the first man to successfully use a parachute. However, some people thought this story was not true.If that was the case, then the first person to successfully use a parachute would go to a Frenchman named Louis-Sebastien Lenormand in 1783.

(C)I recently had the chance to go to my first ever music festival. We Love Green was held over a weekend in Parcde Bagatelle, Paris. While like most music festivals, it boasted an impressive and diverse music. There was something extra special about this one.You see, this was a green festival! From the food to the stalls(货摊), everything was as environmentally friendly as possible. Not only was the majority of the furniture /stalls /toilet rooms hand-made from wood, but the festival was powered by solar energy.Guests were invited to throw rubbish in specially marked dustbins which, after the festival, were sorted so all of the waste could be recycled.Fresh water was made available freely to everyone so that guests were not encouraged to buy drinks in plastic bottles which would have created a lot of waste.I found the experience extremely fun but also really interesting.Having never been to a music festival before, I was unsure of what to expect. However, I was happy to find myself sitting in a field eating a healthy, home-made fruit cake while drinking organic (有机的)fruit juice. There were many stalls, art installations(设施), and different areas, meaning there was something there for everyone, from small children to the elderly! This seems like such a great idea, making something very fun and interesting, that doesn’t cause great damage to the environment.I have discovered that there are more events similar to this across the globe, which is great! I can’t imagine how much waste has been produced from such public events as festivals before we realized just how bad they were for the environment!

二 2019白云区一模(A)It is late at night. People in Cape Town, South Africa, line up to collect water from a spring (泉).One by one, they fill their plastic bottles. Each person can take up to 13 gallons (加仑).Policemen stand by to keep the rules. In a few months, that number will be cut in half.Cape Town is a city of four million people. It is running out of water. For three years, the city has faced a drought. It is the worst in a century.Local reservoirs are mostly sand and dried earth.Officers are telling people to save water.Otherwise, the city will one day be forced to turn off the supply to homes and businesses. That day is being called Day Zero.At press time, Day Zero was expected to be June 4.But the date may change based on water levels in local reservoirs.“There are a lot of people who have not realized the problem,” said Shirley Curry. She waited at a spring to get her share of water.“Now they suddenly realize this is for real.”On Day Zero, each person’s daily water supply will drop to about 6.5 gallons.(The average American uses 80 to 100 gallons of water per day.)Lines at the city’s 200 water collection points will probably get even longer. Some places will not be included in the cutoff. The water will keep running in hospitals and schools. It will stay on in poor areas, too. This is to prevent illness.Areas popular with tourists may also have water.More than 10 million people visit Cape Town each year.Tourism provides nearly 10% of South Africa’s economy.Across the city, people are making an effort to save water. They are taking 90-second showers. They are washing their clothes less often.Using tap water to wash cars or fill swimming pools is not allowed. Those caught using too much water are punished. For some people, rationing (定量供应)now feels normal.Kelson da Cruz keeps one container of water near the shower.Another he uses for brushing his teeth and washing his face.He uses non-drinking water to flush the toilet.

(B)China has cloned (克隆)two monkeys using the same method that created Dolly the sheep in Scotland, leading the way for more exact animal testing for new drugs, scientists said on January 25th, 2018.Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, the primates (灵长动物),were created using the nuclear transfer of somatic cells (体细胞核移植)at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Neuroscience.“Cloning monkeys using somatic cells has been a world-class challenge because it is a primate that shares its genetic makeup (基因组合)with humans,”said Pu Muming, the director of the neuroscience institute in Shanghai.“By cloning monkeys using somatic cells, we can cultivate (培育)a large number of genetically identical offspring (后代)in a short amount of time, and we can even change their genes to suit our needs,”he said.“This can save time, cut down experiment costs and produce more exact results, leading to more effective medicine.”Sun Qiang, the director of the non-human primate research at the institute, said most of the drug experiments are done on laboratory mice. However, drugs that work on mice might not work or may even have negative effects on humans because the two species are so different.  “Monkeys and humans are both primates, so they are much more closely related, and testing on monkeys is supposed to be as effective as testing on humans,” Sun said. “This is especially useful in testing drugs for some neural disease (神经疾病),” he added. However, some fear that the technology used to clone monkeys has opened the door to copying humans. While the technical barrier(障碍)of cloning humans has indeed been broken,“The reason we break this barrier is to produce animal models that are helpful for medical research and human health,” said Pu.“There is no purpose to apply this method to humans.”

三 2019海珠区一模(A)The first night that I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited.A servant came to my house one day with an invitation from his Mr.Gatsby.However, most of the people at his parties were not invited—they just went there.Sometimes they came to the party and left without ever having met Gatsby.I went over to Gatsby’s house at about seven o’clock.I felt nervous among all these people I didn’t know, so I walked around looking for Gatsby.I asked many guests where he was, but they all stared at me in such a surprised way that I decided to go and sit at the bar.I sat at a table where a man was sitting. The man at the table looked at me and smiled.“I think I have seen you before,” he said politely.“Were you in the army during the war? Were you in the First Division?”“Why, yes I was.” I was surprised. The man and I talked for a while about some of the places we had been in the war.I learned that he lived in this neighborhood too, because he told me that he had just bought an airplane and planned to try it in the morning.“Do you want to fly with me tomorrow, young fellow?” he asked.I wanted to go and accepted.I was about to ask his name when he said to me, “Having you had a good time now?”I smiled to my new friend, “This party is strange for me.I don’t even know the host.I haven’t met him yet.I live over there—I turned around and pointed my hand toward my house—and this man, Gatsby, sent over his servant with an invitation.”For a moment, the man I was talking to looked at me as if he didn’t understand.“I’m Gatsby,” he said suddenly.“What!” I cried.“Oh, I didn’t—I’m so sorry.”“I thought you knew, young fellow.I’m sorry—I suppose I’m not a very good host.” He smiled at me.His smile had a quality of comfort in it.It was a smile that you may only see four or five times in life. His smile seemed to say that the whole world was good and that you were also good. His smile understood you and it believed you.His smile disappeared, and I looked at Mr.Gatsby for the first time.He was a handsome young man, about thirty years old and dressed very well.He spoke very politely and it was a little funny to me; most men of his age were not so polite. He spoke as if he was carefully choosing his words.

(B)Drowning (溺水)is among the 10 leading causes of death of children and young people in every region of the world, with children aged under 5 years especially at risk and males twice as likely to drown as females.Tragedies are happening over and over again. To prevent them from growing further, we need to keep some safety tips in mind.Remember, you can drown in the sea just as easily as a swimming pool.•Supervise when in or around water.Ask a responsible adult to watch young children while in the bath and all children swimming or playing in or around water.Because drowning occurs quickly and quietly, adults should not be involved in any other distracting activity (such as reading, playing cards, or talking on the phone)while watching children, even if lifeguards are present.•Drowning≠ Crying for help.Drowning is often not as dramatic as what we see in movies. When someone is drowning, especially if it is a child, they may not be able to shout out.A lot of times when kids drown, they look like they are just absentminded—but they are actually going unconscious. At this point, they should be immediately carried out of the water.•Life jackets can reduce risk.Don’t use air-filled or foam(泡沫)toys, such as “water wings”, “noodles”, or inner-tubes, instead of life jackets. These toys are not life jackets and are not designed to keep swimmers safe.•Don’t try to save drowning friends.Yes, what we are telling you is this is not when you should show your unconditional love to your drowning friends and family members. It is very likely that by saving them, you can get yourself into danger, and might end up becoming a drowning victim yourself.Saving someone drowning hand-in-hand with a few others can be even more dangerous. The “human chain” you form can easily break if one of you experiences any kind of tiredness, and one person can drag down the whole team.•Know who can save a life. Now, knowing that you cannot really save a life, who should you ask for help? Lifeguards. They are usually well-trained and are equipped with many tested life-saving methods. Therefore, if you think you see someone drowning, alert a lifeguard at once, even if you’re not sure what drowning looks like or think you might be wrong.

(C)One after another, telecommunications giants such as Huawei, Samsung and Qualcomm have announced their latest fifth generation (5G)products with Huawei’s Mate X and Samsung’s Galaxy Fold attracting most eyeballs. The telecom giants have also announced that 5G technology would be widely used by 2020, causing some experts to say the “5G epoch” is coming.Yet, when reporting about 5G, many reporters have described it as a “much faster” technology than 4G without mentioning any of its other advantages. As a result, the common public idea about 5G is that they could “download a huge movie within one second”.Beyond that, most people know nothing about 5G.Actually, 5G technology has many more advantages than 4G apart from speed.According to 3GPP, an international standardization organization, 5G technology can be used for at least three purposes—for connecting everything, reliability (可靠性)of connections, and removing delays.“Connecting everything” is a proper slogan for 5G technology, without which the Internet of things would be impossible. For example, self-driving cars contain several kinds of sensors, such as radar, computer vision, and GPS to identify driving routes, obstacles and road signs.5G technology will link all the elements of a transportation system, such as traffic lights, CCTV cameras and, of course, cars to build up perfect coordination so they can avoid obstacles and move on driving routes, which will help strengthen self-driving technology.Reliability of connections is another key characteristic of 5G technology, whose use can be spread to other fields where high safety standards are required. For example, in certain surgeries(外科手术), doctors put nano-robots inside a patient’s body and have to keep constant control over the robots to ensure they work well and do not cause any harm to the patient. This is an area where 5G technology can be of great help, as it can build up reliable and continuous connections between the monitor and the nano-robots.And removing delays might come in handy especially in online games.Even long after 4G technology was introduced, players continued to complain about losing games because of low speed. This problem can be solved with 5G technology, because it will ensure continuous high speed. And for those people who think that 5G costs will be very high, they need not worry. The cost problem can be solved in two ways.First, factories can produce more micro base stations, which not only occupy less space but also cost less. And second, many more terminals (终端)can use a 5G base station compared with a 4G base station. The more terminals using a 5G base station, the lower cost each of them have to pay. Therefore, 5G technology won’t be as costly as you thought.
( )36.How does 5G technology help improve self-driving technology?A.It clears the obstacles for the cars. B.It connects every part of a transport system.C.It makes the self-driving car run much faster. D.It controls the traffic lights and CCTV cameras.

(C)The coast redwood is the unchallenged tallest of North American’s trees. But do you know it grows from a seed (种子)that is smaller than a pea? What’s special about redwoods?Redwoods are special for a couple of reasons. The first is their size.Imagine standing next to a tree which is the height of a 30-floor building. The second is their age.Redwoods usually grows to about 600 years old. Some are even more than 2000 years old.Where do redwoods grow?To find a coast redwood, you’ll have to go to Oregon or California. The land along the west coast, about 450 miles long and up to 35 miles wide, is home to the redwoods.Coast redwoods do not grow anywhere else in the world. Why do redwoods grow there? The coast of the Pacific Ocean provides a special environment for the redwoods.Cool, wet air comes from the ocean and keeps the trees wet all year. That is important because most of the rain falls between October and May.During the dry summer months, the trees depend on the wet air over the coast. How do redwoods survive?Redwoods have a couple of protection systems(系统).The skin of an adult redwood tree can grow to as thick as 12 inches. The thick covering protects the lower part of the tree from fire damage. Also, most of a redwood’s branches and leaves are high up on the tree. This keeps them safe from forest fires.Redwoods are safe from insect damage because the wood has a bitter-tasting chemical. What should I do?If you ever get a chance, visit a redwood forest.Look among the tree trunks and imagine who might have camped there a thousand years ago.Look upward and just imagine how high the trees might grow if we protect them.

五 2019广州市育才中学一模(A)Let me tell you about a young boy who made a model car all on his own.The boy is me, six years ago when I was just 11.The car was small and simple, but in my imagination it was a high-speed racing car, speeding along the race road.It was during the school summer holidays and workmen were building a new driveway and garage(车库)beside our house. It meant to add something new to our home. When I watched the workman, I came up with an idea—I would build a car to drive into the garage in celebration of it.I told my mother and began with my plans. But I couldn’t find the right things for making the car, so I gave up and sadly spent several days doing nothing. My mother noticed that I had stopped working and asked me why.I explained and she suggested that maybe I should change my plan to fit the things I had rather than give up.And that’s just what I did.I found small pieces of wood in my father’s workshop and made my car from anything that was lying around the house. When I found a small engine(发动机)from one of my old model planes, I added that. The power came from a battery I found in a box.By the time the garage was finished,so was my car.I called my family together outside the house, started the engine and put the car on the driveway. It was fast, and I had to run to the garage to prevent it from hitting the new door.My family began to cheer and I smiled proudly. Thanks to my mother, I learned the value of continuing to do things, especially something difficult.Soon I was making plans for my next project: a robot!

(B)It is a question that has confused parents for many years: why do children refuse to eat greens? Now, two American experts believe they have the answer. After studying dozens of babies as they played with various objects, the researchers noted that they were far more unwilling to touch plants than other things. They believe this is because evolution (生物进化)has biologically made children be wary of plants.Due to susceptibility (敏感性)to illness or injury in the early years of life, the body has designed an inner defence mechanism (内部保护机制)that limits a child’s contact with plants, they think. The researchers believe this is why children turn their noses up when faced with a plate of broad beans. The findings are published in a paper by Dr.Annie E Wertz and Dr.Karen Wynn, both psychologists at Yale University. They wrote, “Throughout human evolution…plants have been important in human’s life.Yet, for all of these benefits, plants have always caused very real dangers.”“Plants produce toxins (毒素)as defences that can be harmful, or even deadly. Some plants also produce physical defences, such as thorns (荆棘)can damage tissues (组织)and cause effects over the whole body,”they added.“We predicted that babies may have behavioural strategies that reduce dangers caused by plants.”To test their theory, the researchers studied how children aged 8 to 18 months old reacted when presented with a variety of objects. It took much longer for children to grab plants; objects that were pretended to look like plants also caused a slow response time. For parents attempting to spoon some peas into the mouth of their child, this finding should come as welcome relief.

一(A)“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation(回响).It was just standing there, with Father standing on one side, and I on the other side.We were both in great anger.“Never set foot in this house again!” stormed Father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather sad feeling.I walked aimlessly.A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me.I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree. But now…I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old.We differ in our ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions on me.We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached my house, I saw that the light was still on. “Perhaps Dad is throwing away some of his old stamps,” I thought. “Perhaps he thought they were useless.” I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except Father’s.Dad was always like this.Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret. After an argument he had the habit of creeping up in my sleep and then tucking me underneath the covers. This was how he always was.He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature. The light was still on.“Am I wrong?” I thought, maybe…With the key in hand,I opened the door nervously. When I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks.I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all.Love—it’s second to none.

(C)Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people who worried about getting older.Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50.In fact, they said, by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.The findings came from a survey of more than 340,000 adults in the US.The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in 2008.At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85.The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25.The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Researchers said they didn’t know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.Professor Stone said the emotional patterns could be linked to changes in how people see the world,or maybe even changes in brain chemistry. The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo.Every home there will have a “telepresence” system—allowing users to control the heating and looks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, healthcare and government services.Around the city, escalators will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system. The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems, “making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

(C)New research has found the longest living animal on the Earth with a backbone is a shark. The research, published in Science Magazine, found the Greenland shark is the longest living animal with a backbone in the world. The gray-colored sharks live in the cold water of the Arctic and are named after Greenland, the world’s largest island. After examining one of these sharks, scientists decided it was born in the icy water about 400 years ago and died out recently.
An international team of biologists and physicists was able to estimate (估计)the ages of 28 dead female Greenland sharks by studying the lenses of their eyes.It is a new way to learn the age of an animal.Eight of the sharks were probably 200 years old or more, and could even have been 300 years old. That would make them older than some whales, which earlier were believed to have been the oldest animals at about 211 years old, according to the Associated Press. This discovery also means that Greenland sharks can live more than three times longer than humans. Many people these days can expect to live into their eighties.African elephants average about 70 years. The oldest of the Greenland sharks the scientists studied was nearly 5 meters long.It was thought to have been 392 years old when it was caught four years ago. However, because the testing method is so new, it is not exact. The study’s lead expert is Julius Nielsen, a marine biologist from Denmark. He says the 392 number could have an error range (误差范围)of 120 years in either direction. That means the shark was probably born sometime between the years 1500 and 1740, with 1620 being the most likely.“It’s an estimate. It’s not a determination,”Nielsen said. “It is the best we can do.”Even at the lowest age, the shark would have been 272 years old when it died and still would be the longest-living animal with a backbone, Nielsen said.“I don’t know why they get so old,but I hope someone will find out,”Nielsen said.

三(A)I’ve been skiing since I was eight or nine years old.I’ve been on expeditions (探险)in many places like China, Pakistan and so on.But it was in my home country, the USA, that I came closest to death. It was April, 2011.I was skiing in the Tetons with my friends Jeremy and Xavier. They were both excellent snowboarders. That day, I was the last person to ski. They were watching me from a safe area.Suddenly, I heard someone cry loudly.I turned around and saw the whole mountain start to move behind me.It was a massive avalanche (大雪崩).The kind of avalanche destroys trees, cars, buses, even houses! Tens of thousands of tons of snow was coming straight down the mountain behind me.I felt the snow push me forward, hundreds of metres, and then cover me.It was so heavy that I couldn’t breathe. And then it pushed me forward again and up.I looked around, and for a few seconds, I actually stopped being frightened.I had a moment to stop and to look at the power of the avalanche.I looked down into the bottom of the valley (峡谷).I could see trees that were 30m tall because I was so far away, and they looked tiny to me.“OK, I’m going all the way to the bottom!” I thought. Then the snow pushed me again down the mountain another 450m.I thought the force of the snow would destroy me; it was powerful. But in the end,I felt the avalanche slow down and I just fell heavily over the snow at the bottom of the valley. It took Jeremy and Xavier about 20 minutes to reach me.There was a pile of debris (碎雪)across the bottom of the mountain 300m wide. They couldn’t believe it when they saw me.I was so lucky.Has the experience changed me? Do I think about life differently? I don’t know, maybe. But I do know that it’s important to live your life with meaning.Life is a gift, so be grateful to God.

(B)Language changes all the time.New words and phrases appear and grow. The words and pronunciations used by young people in the UK can be very different from those used by adults. Living in a multi-cultural(多元文化的) society has an effect on language, especially on young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds.TV and music also influence the language of the young.Young British people use lots of language that you usually can’t find in most dictionaries. These very informal(不正规的)words and expressions are known as “slang”.It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang.By the time the list was finished, it would be out of date! However, here are a few examples:◆“Safe”,“sorted”,“sound”,“cool” and “wicked” all mean “That’s good” or “I understand”.◆“Whatever”means “I don’t care”.(e.g.A: But the teacher says we can’t leave until we’ve finished.B: Whatever.I’m going.)◆“He’s fine”and “He’s fit” both mean “He’s good-looking”.Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl. Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it.A school in Sheffield, has recently required its pupils to stop using slang words such as hiya (hello), cheers and ta(both mean “thank you”).The head teacher says that if young people learn to speak“correctly”, this will help them get a place at university and a good job.So, how important is it to learn these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV in English, read magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics, then understanding slang can be very useful. You probably won’t see much slang in your English exam, though.

I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases (行李箱).Earlier that evening, I’d received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash.“Come as soon as you can,” cried my mother.I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess.Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table.Toys lay everywhere.I purposelessly picked things up and put them down.Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened.Someone asked to speak to me,“If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for.Suddenly, the doorbell rang.It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.“I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.I asked him to repeat.“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you.I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral (葬礼).Give me all your shoes.”I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen.Emerson got to work right away.Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order.I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed.One job after another. When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining.I couldn’t help crying.Early the next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done. Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer,“If there’s anything I can do…”. (D)Sorry, potato people! Although it’s probably no surprise that French fries are among the worst food you can eat, most of us still don’t believe it.After all, it doesn’t hurt to eat some every once in a while…right? But some people feel guilty (内疚的)to eat French fries and they have a good reason for that.According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people’s guilty feeling may be well-placed.The research, which researched potato eating in 4,400 older people between ages of 45 and 79 over the course of eight years, shows that eating fried potatoes at least twice a week highly increases our danger of death. But hold up! Before you completely stop eating potatoes, you should know that it is found that eating potatoes overall (even a lot of them!)wouldn’t kill you.Instead, it’s the type of potato that makes all the differences between life and death.Eating fried potatoes like French fries at least twice per week increased the risk of death in the study. On the other hand, potatoes that were not fried, such as boiled and baked potatoes, were less likely to cause death. Why? Potatoes have healthy levels of fiber (纤维)and vitamins, so you can partake without feeling bad.But when it comes to the fried food, you might need to think again.French fries usually have lots of fat and added salt, leading to weight growth.Still, when all is said and done, connection isn’t totally equal to causation (因果关系).More research is needed before certainly concluding that eating French fries alone increases the risk of death.Luckily, potatoes are still considered as one of your suggested three to five servings of vegetables per day.Just try not to eat the fatty ones, if you can.

(B)Imagine you walk into a store.Strangely enough, you see no staff (店员)inside. You pick up things and prepare to wait in line and pay.But even more oddly, there is no cashier at all.So what has happened to this store?Well, you may have entered Tao Café, a cashless store created by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. In July, the public got to see the store for the first time at Alibaba’s Taobao Maker Festival in Hangzhou. The 200-square-meter store sells drinks, fast food and snacks. It can hold up to 50 shoppers at a time.To enter and shop, people only need a smartphone with a Taobao app and an AliPay account (账户).By scanning their Taobao QR code (二维码), shoppers are followed with cameras for facial recognition. The store has also digitalized (数字化)all goods and their placement on the shelves. So when shoppers pick up goods, the system will be able to “watch” and “remember” their selection. When shoppers are ready to leave, they don’t wait in line to pay.Instead, they go through two checkout doors. Then the bills will be paid with a Taobao account connected to AliPay.According to Alibaba, the checkout machines can recognize goods even when shoppers put them in pockets or bags.So it is almost impossible to steal things from the store.Tao Café is not the only cashless store in China.A 24-hour convenience store with no staff called BingoBox opened in Shanghai in June.To enter the store, shoppers scan a QR code on WeChat or AliPay.But unlike the Tao Café, they have to scan another QR code to leave the BingoBox.
