The audience sat quietly while he makes his way acrss the stage t his chair and begins his play. But this time, smething went wrng. Just as he finished the first few bars, ne f the strings n his vilin brke. We thught that he wuld have t stp the cncert. But he didn't. Instead, he waited a mment, clsed his eyes and then signaled the cnductr t begin again.
Of curse, anyne knws that it is impssible t play a pleasant wrk with just three strings. I knw that, and yu knw that, but that night Itzhak Perlman refused t knw that.
When he finished, there was a breathtaking silence in the rm. And then peple rse and cheered.There was an extrardinary utburst f applause frm every crner f the auditrium.
He smiled, wiped the sweat frm his brw and then he said—nt prudly, but in a quiet, hly attitude—“Yu knw, smetimes it is the artist's task t find ut hw much music yu can still make with what yu have left.”
This pwerful line has stayed in my mind ever since I heard it. And wh knws? Perhaps that is the meaning f life—nt just fr artists but fr all f us.
S, perhaps ur task in this fastchanging, puzzling wrld in which we live is t make music, at first with all that we have, and then, when that is n lnger pssible, t make music with what we have left.
