And nw in the battle t stp this disaster, a radi statin in Senegal, West Africa, is ffering listeners 50 kilgrams f rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilgrams f lcusts. “We think this idea will get mre peple t take part in the war n the lcusts,”said Abdulaye Ba frm Sud Fm, a radi statin in ne f Senegal's wrst affected areas.
This is West Africa's biggest lcust disaster in 15 years, and it is mving east, causing huge damage t crps. As they mve they prduce yung, which increases their number and will sn threaten Sudan in the nrtheast f Africa. Sme say it culd reach Asia. Experts say the harmful effect n crps in areas already suffering frm fd shrtages and wars culd cause many peple t g hungry. Gvernments in the areas are nt well equipped t fight the pests.
Althugh leaders f 12 cuntries have agreed n a plan, it is nt expected t be enugh. “We are nw treating 6,000 hectares (公顷) per day with pesticide (杀虫剂), but we need t treat 20,000 hectares per day in rder t have any hpe f cntrlling this disaster,” said Mhamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, directr f lcust cntrl in Mauritania.
