There is no best way to learn a language, just different ways that suit different people. Some people prefer to “pick up” the language by reading books or magazines, watching films, visiting the country where the target language is spoken, etc. They focus on the meanings of words and don't worry too much about the language forms used. This method often suits children if they find themselves in a foreign country or with foreign friends. However, this approach doesn't suit everyone if your aim is to become good at writing.

Probably the most common way to learn a language is in a classroom with a teacher. The teacher can explain difficult words, give guidance, and provide extra motivation and feedback on progress. Unfortunately, some people do not have very pleasant experiences of learning a language in the classroom. Language learning can be great fun. But your writing level will be increased most efficiently this way. Besides learning in a classroom, you can use a personal tutor and arrange a very flexible system of tuition. That means if you are busy at a particular time, you can still arrange to have your language tuition at a time that suits you.

With recent improvements in modern technology, it is now possible to purchase a wide range of multi-media materials for learning a language. You can teach yourself using cassettes, videos, CD- ROMs, books, and any combination of these. This approach is best suited to students who are self-disciplined and well-organized. It also tends to assist with the development of reading and listening skills. But be sure to pick out materials of high quality. If you want to become fluent at speaking and writing a language, you'll also benefit from cooperating with other users.

    4. The method mentioned in the first paragraph can be considered _______.

    A. negative learning                        B. natural and active learning

    C. the most effective learning method          D. a structured learning method

    5. The underlined word “flexible” in the second paragraph means “________”.

    A. strict   B. pleasant          C. safe   D. free

    6. From the passage, we can NOT learn that ________.

    A. people need to care about grammar when speaking a language

    B. classroom studying can be boring sometimes

    C. not all learning materials can help improve our language level

    D. students lacking self-control may not benefit much from self-study

    7. What might be talked about in the next passage?

    A. How to find a personal tutor.

    B. How to deal with the difficulties in study.

    C. How to work together with other language learners.

    D. How to find the best studying method.

                             C

The kindly “Chinese Fortune Grandpa” wearing Han Chinese clothing and holding a fortune bag debuted (亮相) at the Imperial Ancestral Shrine in Beijing on the day after Christmas. The final image of the Chinese gift-giver was selected through a global design competition against “Santa Claus”, according to a report by Guangming Daily.

Many Chinese cities have been filled with Christmas neon lights, Christmas songs, Christmas trees, and the images of “Santa Claus” in recent days. As a matter of fact, foreign festivals are becoming more popular than certain traditional Chinese festivals among the Chinese people, particularly the youth. “Certain traditional festivals have died out because people have forgotten their spiritual meanings, ”said noted writer Feng Jicai. More and more Chinese people are beginning to exchange gifts on Valentine's Day and Christmas. However, many of them know nothing about Chinese New Year pictures or sugarcoated figurines (小糖人), and have never heard suona music. Certain folk customs on the Dragon Boat Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day, and other traditional festivals have gradually disappeared. Under such circumstances, even the “Chinese Fortune Grandpa” is unlikely to defeat “Santa Claus”.

However, it is not a bad thing to some extent. It constantly reminds people to restore the “true face” of traditional festivals. China has listed traditional Tomb Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival as legal holidays, which brings more paid leaves to the public, and helps to awake the public awareness of traditional festivals.

In modern society, festival is a carrier of culture and its meaning largely depends on their understandings and usages by people. Compared with foreign festivals, traditional Chinese festivals are not inferior (次于) in cultural meanings, but lack of fashion sought by modern people. If people do not appreciate the historical culture contained by traditional festivals, and only take pleasure-seeking as the most important, the significance of traditional festivals will fade away and the inheritance (继承) of fine traditional culture will be cut off.

    8. The second paragraph implies that ________.

    A. traditional festivals should co-exist with foreign festivals.

    B. all the Chinese festivals are disappearing in the near future.

    C. western festivals are constantly impacting on our festivals.

    D. the Chinese people have the public awareness of traditional festivals.

    9. We can learn from the passage that ________.

    A. an image designed by the Chinese people will be displayed.

    B. the Chinese gift-giver was intended to symbolize traditional culture.

    C. many foreigners know nothing about Chinese festivals.

    D. the Chinese are beginning to exchange gifts on the Mid-Autumn Festival.

    10. Many Chinese youth dislike traditional festivals because they think ________.

    A. traditional festivals are out of fashion now.

    B. the historical culture is more difficult to understand.

    C. western festivals contain more cultural meanings.

    D. the inheritance will cut off their contact with western festivals.

    11. What would be the best title of the passage?

    A. Gone are Chinese Traditional Festivals.

    B. True Face of Chinese Traditional Culture.

    C. Foreign Festivals Popular with Chinese.

    D. Chinese Fortune Grandpa VS Santa Claus.

                                           D

We are surrounded every day by thousands of chemicals. These chemicals have been found to be safeon their own.  But are they still safe if mixed with other chemicals? That's the big question.

On its own, each chemical seems harmless. But in combination with other chemicals, they may become deadly. That is the finding of a two-year study by a high-profile task force of scientists. The task force was told to investigate the cancer-causing possibility of chemical mixtures.

Linda Gulliver was one of 174 scientists on the task force. Their job was to study the cancercausing potential of 85 chemicals. All 85 are said to be common in the environment. Ms Gulliver explains that chemicals have the potential to form dangerous mixtures. Even simple minerals can become dangerous when mixed with chemicals found in plastics or beauty products. While the chemicals are safe on their own, she says, the researchers found that many chemical compound cause cancer in human cells.

Working in groups, the scientists explored how different chemical mixtures could lead to cancer. Ms Gulliver's team looked at the ability of different combinations to support the increase of malignant (恶性的) human cells.

She says the big issuewhat she calls the $ 64 million dollar questionis, Which common, everyday chemicals do people need to avoid The $ 64 million dollar question that everybody wants to ask is, Which chemicals should we be looking out for And the answer to that is, We don't know yet.

She says the current way to identify whether chemicals cause cancer is to test them one at a time. This method leads, she adds, to a long list of supposedly safe chemicals. She and her team say that approach needs to change.

We definitely need certain research ... to find out what mixtures of chemicals would be more harmful than others; what groups of chemicals, when together, would produce more harmful effects. And at the moment, that is not known.”

    12. The purpose of the researchers' work is ________.

    A. to find ways to protect human cells.

    B. to study the character of the chemicals.

    C. to study how deadly the chemicals in our homes are.

    D. to study the cancer-causing possibility of mixtures.

    13. According to Ms Gulliver's words, their research work is ________.

    A. practical to other researchers             B. completely successful

    C. still limited                         D. not well received

    14. What's the best title of the passage?

    A. Chemicals are everywhere

    B. Chemicals can lead to cancer

    C. What is in chemicals in our daily life?

    D. Mixture of safe chemicals may cause cancer

    15. What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Harmful chemicals are throughout our homes.

    B. It is hard to tell what mixture of chemicals is harmful.

    C. Researchers have quick approaches to studying the chemicals.

    D. Scientists know which mixture does harm to our health.

    Dear Xiao Wang,

I have received and read your letter, in which you mentioned that you wanted to lose weight by dieting.

It is only natural that young girls at your age hope to look beautiful .However,in my opinion ,health is more important than beauty. For a student, studying is the first thing to consider while appearance is the second. So do not let others’ opinions affect your normal life . However, if you do want to lose weight, it is a good idea to do it by getting more exercise and changing unhealthy eating habits. The most important thing is that you keep a healthy state of mind, as it will help with your studies, and will also help you overcome difficulties in dieting.

I hope my advice will be helpful to you and I’m looking forward to your next letter.

    Yours,

    Li Hua.
