The team, led by Michael T. Tlley, a prfessr f mechanical engineering at the Jacbs Schl f Engineering at UC San Dieg, details its findings in the Feb. 17 , 2021 issue f the jurnal Science Rbtics.
“This wrk represents a fundamental yet significant step twards fully-autnmus, electrnics-free walking rbts," said Dylan Drtman, a Ph. D. student in Tlley's research grup and the paper's first authr.
Applicatins include lw-cst rbts fr entertainment, such as tys, and rbts that can perate in envirnments where electrnics cannt functin, such as MRI machines. Sft rbts are f particular interest because they easily adapt t their envirnment and perate safely near humans.
Mst sft rbts are pwered by air and are cntrlled by electrnic circuits. But this apprach requires cmplex cmpnents like circuit bards, valves(阀门) and pumps -ften utside the rbt's bdy. These cmpnents, which make up the rbt's brains and nervus system, are typically large and expensive. By cntrast, the UC San Dieg rbt is cntrlled by a light-weight, lw-cst system f air-pwered circuits, made up f tubes and sft valves, nbard the rbt itself. The rbt can walk n cmmand r in respnse t signals it senses frm the envirnment.
“ With ur apprach, yu culd make a very cmplex rbtic brain, " said Tlley, the study's senir authr. "Our fcus here was t make the simplest air-pwered nervus system needed t cntrl walking."
In the future, researchers want t imprve the rbt's ways t walk s it can walk n natural field and uneven surfaces. This wuld allw the rbt t navigate ver a variety f bstacles(障碍).This wuld require a mre cmplicated netwrk f sensrs and as a result a mre cmplex air-pwered system. The team will als lk at hw the technlgy culd be used t create rbts, which are in part cntrlled by air-pwered circuits fr sme functins, such as walking.
    28. What is the achievement f the team's study?
    A. Their rbts can walk a huge step.
    B. Their rbts wrk fllwing cmmands.
    C. Their study gets their electrnics fr free.
    D. They find a new technique in walking rbts.
    29. What can the team's rbts be applied t frm the passage?
    A. Ty cmpanies' prducts.B. Envirnmental prtectin.
    C. Human safety.D. Factries withut wrkers.
    30. What will the researchers prbably d?
    A. Change the way f pwer.B. Help rbts walk as human.
    C. Imprve rbts t avid bstacles.D. Build a netwrk t cntrl rbts.
    31. What is the passage mainly talking abut?
    A. The intrductin t electrnics-free walking rbts.
    B. The functins f newly-develped rbts.
    C. The applicatins f sft walking rbts.
    D. The ways t imprve traditinal rbts.

Turtles have an unfrtunate habit f eating plastic bjects flating in the sea. These then cannt be brken dwn and digested, and may ultimately kill them.
It is widely assumed that this special liking fr plastics is a matter f mistaken identity. Flating plastic bags, fr instance, lk similar t jellyfish, which many types f turtles lve t eat. Yet lta f plastic bjects that end up inside turtles are nt similar t jellyfish. Jseph Pfaller f the University f Flrida therefre suspects that the . smell f micr-rganisms(微生物)which 81nise(聚集)flating plastic bjects fls turtles t feed.
Researchers at the University f Califrnia nticed that certain chemicals, which are released int the air by micr-rganism--clnised plastics, are thse which many seabirds sniff t track dwn fd. These chemicals mark gd places t hunt because they indicate an abundance f the seaweed and bacteria. Since turtles are knwn t break the surface and sniff the air when swimming twards their feeding areas, Dr. Pfaller indicated that they are fllwing these same chemicals, and are fled int thinking that flating plastic bjects are edible.
T test that idea, he and his clleagues set up an experiment. They arranged fr 15 f the animals, each arund five mnths ld, t be expsed, in randm rder, t fur smells delivered thrugh a pipe t ; the air abve an experimental area. The smells were: the vapur frm deinised (去离子)water; the smell f turtle-feeding meal; the smell f a clean plastic bttle; and the smell f a similarly plastic bttle that had been kept in the cean fr five weeks t allw seaweed and bacteria t grw n it. Tw f the smells-the smell f meal and that f five-week-ld bttles-prved far mre attractive t the animals than the thers.
On the face f it, then, the turtles were respnding t the smell f ld bttles as if it were the smell f fd. In an unplluted cean, pretty well anything which had this smell wuld be edible-r, at least, harmless. Unfrtunately, five-week-ld plastic bttles and their like are nt.
    32. What is mst peple's pinin n turtles' special habit?
    A. Turtles prefer jellyfish t plastics.B. Turtles enjy the taste f plastics.
    C. Turtles like being fed with plastic tls. D. Turtles chse t eat plastics fr a mistake.
    33. What des the underlined wrd “edible" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Fit t eat. B. Pleasant t smell.
    C. Far t reach. D. Easy t digest.
34 What can we infer frm Dr. Pfaller's research?
    A. Many seabirdscantrack thefd. B.Mst animals findfdthrughsmells.
    C. Tw smells areespeciallyfavred by turtles. D. The favred smellleadsturtlestseek fr fd.
    35. Why did the authr mentin the unplluted cean at last?
    A. T explain why the cean is plluted.
    B. T ask fr peple t feed turtles prper fd.
    C. T aruse the awareness f prtecting the cean.
    D. T shw his agreement n Dr. Pfaller's research.
