N ne was hurt, but the Dnnellys’ building was badly damaged (损坏), and they weren’t sure where they were ging t stay. Dnnelly was excited t learn that Red Paw culd prvide free shrt-term care fr Kramer, her 17-year-ld cat.
“When smene lses everything in a fire, they shuldn’t then be frced t lse their pets — their family members — as well,” Leary said. “Letting them knw, ‘We’ll take care f yur animal like it is ur wn’ means the wrld t peple.”
After a big fire in 2011, Leary frmed her rganizatin. Since then, Leary and her grup have prvided help t nearly 1,000 animals and their families thrughut sutheastern Pennsylvania. Like the Red Crss, but fr animals.
Red Paw cared fr the Dnnellys’ cat fr mre than three weeks. “I cried when we were reunited,” said Dnnelly. “They went abve and beynd the call f duty. I am s thankful.”

Welcme t Death Valley. The very name f this natinal park in eastern Califrnia might fill sme peple with dread, but yu’re nt afraid. Yu’re just ut enjying the desert sunshine. Besides, there’s nthing ut here but sme rcks.
Sme f the rcks in Death Valley weigh hundreds f punds. And in the grund behind each rck is a mysterius trail (痕迹), as if the rck had been pushed alng in the dirt.
S wh is mving the rcks? Nbdy. It was nearly 100 years ag when these unusual “sailing stnes” were first reprted. Peple have been trying t find ut the stnes’ secret ever since. One early explanatin was that winds were mving the stnes. Other explanatins have included animals, and, f curse, aliens (外星人).
Until the 1990s, ne widely held thery was that the rcks were stuck in sheets (片) f ice that were being blwn acrss the desert. (Death Valley des get cld enugh fr ice t frm n sme winter nights.) Hwever, research later shwed that t mve such large ice sheets, the wind wuld have t blw at hundreds f miles per hur. There are strng winds in Death Valley — but nt that strng.
Then, in 2006, a scientist named Ralph Lrenz came up with a new thery. He suggested that in the winter, thick ice frms arund the rcks. When the grund begins t thaw (解冻), the rcks, wearing ice, sail alng, leaving trails behind them. Lrenz put his thery t the test in his wn kitchen. He drpped a rck int a dish, added a little water, and stuck the dish in his fridge. Later, he tk ut the rck and placed it in a dish f water with sand at the bttm. Sure enugh, with just a breath, Lrenz was able t send the rck mving acrss the water — leaving a trail in the sand as it mved.
Has Lrenz slved the mystery f the sailing stnes at last? Perhaps. On the ther hand, neither Lrenz nr anyne else has ever actually seen the stnes mve. Maybe aliens are respnsible after all.

My wife, Nell, and I wanted t rent a car in Flrida’s Tampa airprt. When asked hw I was ging t pay, I pened my purse t get my credit card (信用卡). It wasn’t there!
