The hardest questin peple ask me is, “What's yur favrite bk?” My mind ges blank, then gets as busy as a New Yrk City street. Titles cmpete fr my attentin: Pick me! Pick me! The Great Gatsby is fighting with Marjrie Mrningstar. Little Wmen's March sisters are elbwing Anne Tyler's Tull family frm Dinner at the Hmesick Restaurant.
Smehw I stammer ut (结巴地说出) an answer, but it isn't a true ne because I dn't have a favrite bk. Hw culd I? I've read thusands f bks. As a strange, quiet and shy girl wearing glasses in grammar schl, my best friends were bks. Smetimes when smene asks me my favrite bk, I answer, “Little Wmen,” because when I was 7 and felt like an utcast (被抛弃的人), it created a wrld fr me t escape int.

I understd Jay Gatsby's wn yearning — fr Daisy, fr the American Dream, fr things perhaps he t culdn't name. Isn't that why sme bks matter s much t us? They shw us smething at the exact mment we are seeking it.
That was certainly true f Marjrie Mrningstar, Herman Wuk's 1955 cming-f-age nvel abut a yung rmantic wman wh wants t becme an actress. Marjrie culdn't be mre different than my wn teenage self. S, mst f what makes a bk gd is that we are reading it at the right mment fr us. Maybe the questin shuld be, “What was yur favrite bk when yu were in third grade? In high schl? A new mm?” Nw that I can answer.
