There really wasn't any great reasn why I wanted t circle the wrld. I simply wanted t d smething fun and different. When I had this plan, I didn't plan fr it t lead t a life n the rad frever. I was planning t cme back, pen a new law practice and write a hugely successful bk abut my travels. Befre I left, I started a travel blg, which served as a way t take ntes fr the bk.
Once I set ff n my trip in December 2008, I fund that travelling withut using planes was nt easy. It tk seven days and nights n trains t get frm Mscw t Beijing. Smetimes, I wuldn't see a village r a human being fr 10 hurs. I had a whle cabin t myself frm the secnd day f that jurney.

I was asked by a reader recently why s many animals seem t have pink ears, when their bdies are all different clurs? The truth is that mst animals actually dn't have pink ears. Let us explain.
Near the equatr, where the climate (气候) is ht, animals are likely t have darker skin, including n their ears. Think f the African elephant, which has quite dark ears. In clder climates, skin clur is usually lighter and ften pink.
Why is skin clur different in different climates? Skin pigmentatin, which is what gives skin its clur, can prtect against sunburn and skin cancer. When animals live in clder parts f the wrld, they dn't need it as much t survive. Light-clured skin als helps animals stay warmer because it reduces heat lss (丧失), which is useful if yu're in a clder climate.
Fr mst animals, the clur f their fur r ther bdy cvering has generally develped as camuflage. That allws animals t mix int the backgrund and avid being eaten, r fr predatrs (捕食者) t remain hidden during hunting. One example is the sandy-clured cat f the desert fennec fx, which uses camuflage fr bth hunting and hiding.
By the way, in many animals, ears cme in many different shapes and sizes. Fr example, in bats, the serval (a type f African wildcat) and the fennec fx, the ears are large cmpared t their bdy size — this helps them hear better because it allws them t sense mre sund waves. Naked mle-rats have tiny ears because they need t dig a lt. Big ears wuld get in the way. The ther dwnside f big ears is that yu can lse a lt f bdy heat. That's why animals that live in really cld places, like the Arctic fx, have quite small ears.
28. Wh is the authr mst likely t be?
A. A teacher.
B. A librarian.
C. A z wrker.
D. A science writer.
29. What des the underlined wrd “it” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
A. Sunlight.
B. Camuflage.
C. Skin pigmentatin.
D. Light-clured skin.
30. Which animal uses its skin clur t prtect itself frm being eaten?
A. The Arctic fx.
B. The naked mle-rat.
C. The African elephant.
D. The desert fennec fx.
31. What d we knw abut animals living in cld places?
A. They usually have small light-clured ears.
B. They knw ways t stre bdy heat.

One f the newest wrds n the cffee stage is “shade (树阴) grwn cffee”. Shade grwn cffee isn't new. In fact, until nly a few years ag, shade grwn cffee represented the majr cffee beans sld n the wrld cffee market. The cffee plant is a natural shade lver, grwing best in the shade affrded by an vergrwing canpy (树冠) f rain frest plants. That canpy prtects the cffee plant frm sunlight that reduces its prductin and kills it.
Shade grwn cffee is, hwever mre expensive t grw, at least in the shrt run. Grwing cffee in the shade means that cffee grwers als have t spend time wrking n the prtectrs. It means that less land is left t prduce cffee beans. The arrival f technically engineered cffee plants that grw well in the sun represented a majr develpment in cffee industry. Because there was n need t grw shade trees t prtect the cffee trees, farmers culd use mre and mre land t grw cffee trees, increasing their prductivity and pssibly leading t mre mney fr the cffee plantatins and farmers.
Hwever, it was nt a gd idea t mve away frm shade grwn cffee. The sheltering (遮蔽的) canpy prvided mre than just shade fr the cffee trees. Thse plants prvided shelter fr birds and ther animals wh feed n pests (害虫). They help t fix nitrgen in the sil, and nitrgen is a natural fertilizer (肥料), which makes plants grw mre successfully. The increase in land used t grw sun lving cffee trees als had an unexpected effect n the law f supply and demand (供需). The increased prductin resulted in a huge amunt f cffee beans cming t the market, which brught dwn prices.
Mrever, mst experts agree that shade grwn cffee is better in taste than cffee grwn in full sun. Plants grwn in shade take lnger t develp. The slwer grwing time helps t imprve the cffee's taste. Yu can buy a can f shade grwn cffee t replace yur usual sun cffee. One cup f cffee a day — it's a small price t pay fr a better wrld.
5. What d we knw abut shade grwn cffee?

C. They help clear the nitrgen in the sil.
D. They make cffee plants grw mre quickly.
8. What des the authr suggest?
