“Hw are yu?” is a nice questin. It’s a friendly way that peple in the United States greet each ther. But “Hw are yu?” is als a very unusual questin. It's a questin that ften desn’t need an answer. The persn wh asks “Hw are yu?” hpes t hear the answer “Fine”, even if the persn’s friend isn’t fine. The reasn is that “Hw are yu?” isn't really a questin and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply ther ways f saying “Hell” r “Hi”. Smetimes, peple als dn't say exactly what they mean. Fr example, when smene asks “D yu agree?”, the ther persn might think, “N, I disagree. I think yu’re wrng.” But it isn’t very plite t disagree s strngly, s the ther persn might say “I’m nt sure.” It's a nicer way t say that yu dn’t agree with smene. Peple als dn’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with ther peple. Fr example, many talks ver the phne finish when ne persn says “I have t g nw.” Often, the persn wh wants t hang up gives an excuse: “Smene's at the dr.” “Smething is burning n the stve.” The excuses might be real, r nt. Perhaps the persn wh wants t hang up simply desn't want t talk any mre, but it isn’t plite t say that. The excuse is mre plite, and it desn’t hurt the ther persn.
Whether they are greeting each ther, talking abut an idea, r finishing a talk, peple dn't say exactly what they are thinking. It's an imprtant way that peple try t be nice t each ther, and it's part f the game f language.
