Whenever I talk abut persnality in relatin t chsing a career, sme peple cmplain like this: Thse tests are s stupid. When I was in sixth grade, I tk ne f them and it said that I shuld be a farmer. Eckersley and Caldirni are at the head f an anti-plastic mvement in the UK that has been fuelled by newspaper investigatins (调查) including The Guardian’s Bttling It series and The Blue Planet televisin series.
But their enthusiasm is nt shared by big supermarkets, which have n interest in reducing their plastic waste. “Fr a natin f shpkeepers we are falling behind in this race,” says Sian Sutherland, funder f the campaign A Plastic Planet which led the calls fr plastic-free gds shelves. Wandering thrugh supermarkets where everything is cvered in plastic, Sutherland says actin rather than wrds is needed. Her c-funder Frederikke Magnussen explains the rigins f their campaign. “It started with tw unreasnable wmen wh wanted chice — and supermarkets are all abut chice, right? I can buy sugar-free, fat-free, African fd, Asian fd, yet if I want t buy plastic-free it is impssible fr me t d s.”

It was in 2004 that I decided t build a garden at Charltn Manr Primary Schl. I’d seen the news reprts abut children lacking (缺乏) knwledge f where their fd came frm and felt that we as a sciety had been separated frm fd. The reasn fr this was clear t me: we were n lnger educating ur children abut fd in schls. I saw a garden as a chance fr the children t learn in a real way. I als wanted t use it t cver tpics: life cycles, flwering plants, creative writing and reprt writing. I believed that plenty f subjects culd be well taught in a garden, while increasing pupils’ activity levels and encuraging teamwrk.
With many teachers facing explanatins frm children such as “It wasn’t my fault” and “It wasn’t nly me”, here was ur chance t develp a sense f respnsibility (责任). It hasn’t all been plain sailing (一帆风顺) thugh. At the beginning, we tried hard t get sme f the teachers n bard, because f cncerns that behaviural prblems wuld wrsen — because if they culdn’t trust the children in the classrm, wuldn’t they be wrse utside? But nce thse teachers started making use f the garden there was recgnisable behaviur change in thse pupils. The children wrked as a team and tk respnsibility fr grwing the plants.
We needed t think abut funding (资金), t. I knw ther schls that have taken different rutes t supprt such prjects — finding parent and grandparent vlunteers (志愿者) r smene with a knwledge f gardening wh are ready t share their skills and supprt teachers. Cmmunity is a big thing fr us. Prducts frm the garden are sld in the schl shp, run by the children n weekdays. We’ve als begun selling prducts, such as tmates, ptates, eggs and hney t parents and thers, and a lcal restaurant and Brugh Market in central Lndn, helping us t channel funds back int the garden.
The research f the Fd Grwing in Schls Taskfrce makes clear the advantages f schl gardens: learning, increased understanding f the natural envirnment. It has als shwn that utdr learning can add value t everyday experiences in the classrm. I’d agree. The garden has prvided wnderful learning chances fr the children. It has brught the cmmunity tgether.
5. Why did the authr plan a schl garden?
A. T prve the news reprts true.
B. T make use f the waste land in schl.

8. What des the research fcus n?
