After fur mnths, Park finally managed t escape. He had a few belngings left ther than his hat but refused t give up the expeditin (探险). Park cntinued n his way t the Niger, reaching the river n 20 July 1796. Park traveled as far as Ségu befre returning t the cast and then t England.

“Yu knw, the sft subjects,” says the by in maths. “The easy nes: the stupid girls at the bttm take them. Like dance. It shuldn’t even be a subject.” We’re chsing subjects fr ur A-level taster day at schl. I see the raised eyebrws when I explain tw f my GCSE (General Certificate f Secndary Educatin) chices are dance and drama.
I was tld by advisers that dance and drama wuldn’t help me t get a suitable career. My friends tld me I’d get bred f dance and switch t science within the first mnth.
But taking GCSE dance was the best decisin I ever made. Dance gives me smething t pur my head and heart int. It gives me a feeling f belnging, creativity, security (安全) and freedm.
The educatin secretary Nicky Mrgan has put emphasis n (强调) science, technlgy, engineering and maths (STEM), saying that students wh fcus n the arts risk their careers. Stpping yung peple frm expressing themselves at such a yung age is nt ding them any favurs. Perhaps Nicky Mrgan has frgtten t pen the dr f having a drive t study that subject day in, day ut. It shuldn’t matter what that subject is.
I dn’t dubt the influence that STEM subjects can have n the peple that lve them. But t frce children int ne field is cruel (残忍的). As much as I try, I’m nt gd at and dn’t lve physics, bilgy r maths. I dn’t want a career in these areas.
There has been a decrease in the number f state schls ffering arts subjects taught by specialist teachers. I can’t even imagine hw it feels t be tld that yu dn’t teach a “real subject” by an 8-year-ld by.
T the teachers, the parents, the gvernment I say: Let children make their wn decisins. Let them live in the present. Let them have a real, unlimited educatin.
28. Hw des the by in maths feel abut dance?
A. Useless.
B. Difficult.
C. Beautiful.
D. Imprtant.
29. After the authr tk GCSE dance, she _____.
A. lst interest in it
B. kept her mind n it
C. turned t ther subjects
D. struggled with her lessns

B. She suggests students take a risk in their careers.

Have yu ever caught yurself saying, “I hate small talk!” the minute yu walk int a party? If s, yu might be an intrvert (内向的人). Intrverts hate t chat abut “small” subjects with peple. They are fine when yu talk ne n ne but seem t get lst in the crwd when there’s a grup arund.
If yu’re talking t an intrvert, yu might find that yur first few cnversatins g ne f tw ways. Either they’ll seem t get bred and nt say much r they’ll seem t skate ver small talk in favr f mre in-depth tpics. What yu need t knw is that the intrvert is nt being rude. It’s just that they dn’t like small talk. Here’s why.
Small talk serves as a gateway tward deeper cnversatin. Sme intrverts dn’t realize that small talk will actually help them get t the bigger tpics. Yu dn’t need t stay n small talk frever. Hwever, smetimes intrverts feel that even the shrt amunt (数量) f time it takes t get int the real cnversatin is a waste f time. Small talk is very fast. Smene says smething and this shuld be fllwed up with a quick respnse. But intrverts like t chew n (深思) their wrds befre saying them alud. Befre they answer, they’ll mull ver different thughts.
Small talk by its very nature invites mre peple t jin in. The mre peple wh jin the cnversatin, the mre the intrvert will tend t (倾向于) step back. As a result, they’ll be quiet. Small talk is abut thrwing ut subjects in the hpe that ne r mre f them can be turned int a cmmn pint f interest.
The listening invlved with small talk is nt in-depth. The purpse is abut listening “lightly” s yu can figure ut the right tpics t spend sme time n. Intrverts tend t be great listeners, but they use active listening rather than light listening. This makes them wnderful friends, but can als make it difficult fr new peple t understand why they’re s quiet.
32. Hw d intrverts respnd t a chat?
A. They try t avid it.
B. They get excited abut it.
C. They give it their full attentin.
D. They fcus n unimprtant tpics.
33. What d we knw abut small talk?
A. It ges slwly.
B. It csts peple a lt f time.
C. It cntributes t deeper tpics.
D. It prvides much useful infrmatin.
34. What des the underlined phrase “mull ver” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Give up.
B. Think ver.
C. Write dwn.
D. Frget abut.
35. Hw can we becme a gd talker in small cnversatins?
A. Figure ut the deep meaning f questins.
B. Think twice befre answering questins.
C. Try t find shared tpics.
