    A
    Haad Farang (Haad Sai Yao)
This small but attractive bay has waters free of riptides(激流), making it safe for families to play water in the sun. As its nickname implies, Farang is Thai for foreigners. You'll find a large concentration of backpackers here. Still, with only a couple of simple food shops, it's a far cry from the noise of the Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui or Kamala on Phuket.
Rent a sea kayak(皮艇)and go around the corner to Tham Morakot (the Emerald Cave), a winding cave that opens up to a bay walled by thick leaves and often visited by groups of monkeys. It is very inspiring, but to fully appreciate it, be sure to prepare a light to avoid knocking against cave walls and other kayaks. To avoid being crowded, make the trip in the late afternoon.
    Where to eat
The Ko Yao Viewpoint Restaurant is the best place for tourists. Drink the sweet cocktails and sit in the last rays of the day.
    Where to stay
Cheaper hotels of comparable quality are set slightly back in the forest, but if you want beachfront access, it's worth choosing one of the basic hotels at the Koh Mook Charlie Beach Resort.
    How to get there
Fly from Bangkok to Trang with AirAsia (from £30), then take a one-hour Tigerline ship from Hat Yao Pier (£19). Besides, a five-hour ship from Phuket at the Rassada Pier (£41) goes directly to the island and will drop passengers at Haad Farang.

Several years ago, I read about the world's longest foot race. It's called the Self-Transcendence 3,100 Mile Race, held between June and August every year. According to a Reuters report, “The longest foot race in the world is 3,100 miles, long enough to stretch from New York to Los Angeles. Those running it choose a different route: They circle one city block in Queens for two months straight.”
It reported, “The athletes lap their block more than 5,000 times. They wear out 12 pairs of shoes. They run more than two marathons daily. In the heat and rain of a New York summer, they stop for nothing, except to sleep between midnight and 6 am.”
I find it incredible that someone can run that far for that long. But what I find even more incredible is that it is done by running the same half-mile stretch over and over again. If the running didn't kill me, the monotony(单调乏味)would!
But I thought of a great picture of life. Our life is a long race. But I don't know how often we have considered that the difficulty in the race is not only in its length, but also in its monotony. So much of what we do is repetitive and mundane.
A mother works hard to take care of her children. But she does the same things every day: diapers(尿布)to be changed, clothes to be washed, dirty dishes to be cleaned. A father works hard to provide for his family, but every day he is working on an assembly line doing the same job repetitively, dealing with hard-to-please customers.
One of the difficulties in living life is hanging there through those difficult times when you're running across the same ground over and over again. However, you should believe that you can survive the monotony and continue to run, and the finish line lies ahead.
4.How does the author feel about the foot race?
    A.Unacceptable. B.Funny.
    C.Embarrassed. D.Shocked.
5.What do we know about the athletes?
    A.They were determined.
    B.They liked repetitive work.
C.They spent much money on the race.
D.They ran to Los Angeles straight.
6.What does the underlined word “mundane” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A.Complex. B.Difficult.
    C.Boring. D.Unreasonable.
7.What does the author advise us to do?
A.To try to participate in the foot race.
B.To be confident to get through dull life.
C.To keep calm to face the challenge of life.
D.To adjust ourselves to the changing society.
    C
Ocean sounds may help people sleep at night, but marine animals depend on them for survival. For example, dolphins rely on echolocation(回声定位) to hunt and communicate with their companions. Such species are in trouble, because human-generated ocean noise has increased significantly since the Industrial Revolution.
Ships alone always generate low-frequency volume along shipping routes by an estimated 32 times. That along with sounds of sonar(声呐), seismic surveys, pile driving and even motorboats, all of which can be heard easily by marine animals in the water, can trap whales in ice by delaying their migration, according to a review published last week in Science.
The paper notes that climate change also threatens the sound track of the sea. The Great Barrier Reef has quieted over the years, but it has become smaller in size and become less habitable because of climate change. Animals that rely on the sounds of coral reefs to locate food and settlements may struggle to adapt.
Earlier this year, the whale scientist and national geographic explorer Jansen Greenwood found an unusual scene. He returned from studying whales in Antarctica to find few cars on the road, virtually no ships on the sea, and humpbacks(座头鲸) arriving at one of the Golden State's most popular coastal recreation spots from their winter habitats in Mexico. He believed the reason may be that the place was suddenly free of the human noises.
The experts argue that making the sea quiet should be a core component of environmental policy. And they say it can be done. A study conducted at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, found that a reduction in shipping traffic coincided with an average decrease of 1.5 decibels(分贝) in waters along shipping routes near the Port of Vancouver.
8.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
    A.The research on ships.
    B.The major threat to whales.
    C.The popularity of shipping.
    D.The harm of ocean noise.
9.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
    A.Add more relative information.
B.Introduce a new topic for discussion.
C.Provide some advice for the readers.
    D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
10.Why did the humpbacks arrive at the recreation spot according to Jansen?
    A.It became quiet.
    B.It was their winter habitat.
C.They wanted to look for food.
    D.They adapted to climate change.
11.What should environmental policy focus on?
    A.Producing fewer ships.
    B.Reducing ocean noise.
    C.Changing shipping routes.
    D.Stopping human activity.
    D
If, as the saying goes, less is more, why do we humans overdo so much? In a new paper featured on the cover of Nature, University of Virginia researchers explain why people rarely look at a situation, an object or an idea that needs improving, in all kinds of contexts, and consider removing something as a solution. Instead, we almost always add some elements, whether it helps or not.
“It happens in engineering design, which is my main interest,” said Leidy Klotz. “But it also happens in writing, cooking and everything else. Just think about your own work and you will see it. The first thing that comes to our minds is, what we can add to make it better. Our paper shows that doing this is harmful to ourselves, when the only right answer is to subtract(减去).”
Klotz, whose research explores the overlaps between engineering and behavioral science, teamed up with three colleagues from the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy on the interdisciplinary(跨学科的) research that shows just how additive we are by nature.
“Additive ideas come to mind quickly and easily, but subtractive ideas require more cognitive(认知的) effort,” Converse said. “Because people are often moving fast and working with the first ideas that come to mind, they end up accepting additive solutions without considering subtraction at all.”
“The more often people rely on additive strategies, the more cognitively accessible they become,” Adams said. “Over time, the habit of looking for additive ideas may get stronger and stronger, and in the long run, we end up missing out on many opportunities to improve the world by subtraction.”
Klotz has a book that takes a wider view of the topic,Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less, coming out a week after the Nature paper. “It's an incredibly interesting finding, and I think our research has great implications across contexts, especially in engineering to improve how we design technology to benefit humanity,” Klotz said.
12.What do people do to make things better according to the paper?
    A.Looking for help from others.
    B.Keeping the things' previous style.
    C.Adding elements to the things.
    D.Removing something as a solution.
13.Why do people always fail to consider subtraction?
A.Subtractive ideas require less cognitive effort.
B.We have formed a habit of looking for additive ideas.
C.We often work with the newest ideas that come to mind.
D.It's impossible to improve the world by subtractive ideas.
14.What did Klotz say about the finding?
    A.It will draw great attention.
    B.It needs improving.
    C.It's accessible.
    D.It's practical.
15.Which of the following may be the best title for the text?
A.When is the right time to subtract?
B.What should we do to change additive ideas?
C.Why don't we improve through subtraction?
D.How do we design technology to benefit humanity?

On a windy day in December of 2016, a video online showed a girl was sitting on the sidewalk with a sign reading “Homeless and Hungry, Please Help!” The girl looked to be about 10 or 11 years old. Many people simply walked past the girl without even taking a look at her.
The girl remained sitting there with a plastic cup between her two feet. Occasionally, a person stopped to drop some small change into her cup. An old man slowly walked up to the girl and softly bent down next to her. He asked if she was homeless. The little girl could only respond by simply shrugging her shoulders(耸肩).
The old man was very confused and tried to ask the girl more questions. Again, the little girl could only respond in the same way. The old man eventually gave up and dropped some coins into her cup. The girl was alone again and was looking hopefully down the street to see if anyone was coming her way. More people passed her without giving any notice to her. She was unsure of what was about to happen.
Then a woman approached the girl. After reading the little girl's sign, she decided to talk to the girl. However, the woman changed her mind suddenly. Hope quickly left the girl's face as the woman walked away.
The video showed a few minutes later, the same woman was moving towards the girl. She was seen carrying two packages of food. She then lowered herself next to the girl and asked her something. She then put the two packages down and dropped a $20 bill into her cup. The woman went on to explain that she didn't have much more to offer because she was homeless as well. The girl remained silent as a young man began approaching the pair. The man approaching the pair was the person behind Robby TV. Robby was a filmmaker that posted videos online. The girl was a child actress. This entire scene had turned out to be a social experiment.

14.D 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“‘It's an incredibly interesting finding, and I think our research has great implications across contexts, especially in engineering to improve how we design technology to benefit humanity,’ Klotz said.( Klotz说:‘这是一个非常有趣的发现。我认为我们的研究具有跨环境的重大意义,特别是在工程学方面,它可以改善我们如何设计造福人类的技术’)”可推知,Klotz认为这个发现很实用。故选D。
    15.C 主旨大意题。第一段提出“人们总是给事物添加元素来使其变得更好”这一现象,下文研究人员解释了这一现象背后的原因以及对这一发现的一些看法。由此可知,C选项“为什么我们不能通过减法改进?”最适合作为文章标题。故选C。

    长难句分析
原句 Because people are often moving fast and working with the first ideas that come to mind, they end up accepting additive solutions without considering subtraction at all.

    One possible version:
    A Patriotic Song Contest
With the purpose of enriching our spare life and inspiring our love for the motherland, a patriotic song contest was held in our school last Friday.
Every class performed two songs. The first song offered by our school was a must. The other song was chosen freely to perform, which increased the fun of the contest. After fierce competition, three top classes were awarded prizes, among which the class wearing army uniform left the deepest impression on me.
The activity not only made me relaxed but also motivated me to study harder to contribute to our motherland.

Robby stepped towards the little girl and the kind woman. He shook the woman's hand and explained what was going on. He showed her where the cameras were. Robby handed her the prize for her kindness. The woman was clearly shocked at what had just happened. Because she refused to take the food and the money back, the child actress donated them to another homeless person. The kind woman was very grateful for what she had just received. The actress gave the homeless woman a warm hug.
    Paragraph 2:
Those who watched the video were shocked at the lack of sympathy and the help that was offered to the little girl. They were surprised that the person who did help the little girl was homeless herself and gave all that she had to the little girl. The viewers shared their feelings in the video's comment section. One person wrote that he hoped the homeless lady would get some help as well. The goal of this video was to show the lack of sympathy for those who are homeless. The video was used as a way to lead to some changes.
