    A
    Animals in Antarctica
There are no land animals that actually live in Antarctica! However, the surrounding ocean is rich in living creatures! It's just too cold to support very many life forms! Now let's meet some of Antarctica's animals.
    Weddell Seal
They are the southernmost pinniped(鳍足类动物)in the world. Males are generally smaller than females. Interestingly, newborn pups have a coat of long hair, which they will shed(脱落) within the first month as the protective layer of their body is developed.
    Blue Whale
Named for its blue-gray color, this huge animal may grow to be roughly 100 feet long and weigh more than 150 tons!A blue whale eats about 4 tons of krill(磷虾)per day during the feeding season! This means that about 40 million krill are eaten every day for six months by a blue whale! The tongue of the blue whale can be as big as a Volkswagen! The blue whale is the loudest animal on earth!
    Rockhopper Penguin
Rockhopper penguins, one kind of the most beautiful penguins, shake their heads and cause their yellow eyebrows to fly into a “halo” in order to attract a mate!
    Wandering Albatross
This species of albatross wanders the ocean for months at a time searching for food. It sleeps on the ocean surface at night and drinks sea water. The wandering albatross is the largest bird in the world in terms of the wing span—11 feet!
    Ross Seal
Ross seals are very rarely seen because they live deep within the pack ice. It is believed that Ross seals feed mainly on squid, fish and krill. They were named after the British polar explorer Sir James Ross, who first discovered them in 1840.
    Emperor Penguin

Emperor penguins are the biggest of the 18 penguin species. They are flightless birds. They are the only living species to reproduce during the harsh Antarctic winter. Without a nest, the father emperor penguin keeps the egg warm by holding it on his feet for 2—3 months until spring, during which the father doesn't eat anything and he just eats a little snow for moisture. Unbelievable! What a Dad!

Clyde, a small-clawed otter, was moved from Auckland Zoo to Wellington Zoo two months ago. The zookeepers hoped he and another otter Bonnie might start a family together.
But only two days after he arrived, Clyde went missing. He had dug his way under one of the walls and was nowhere to be seen.
The zookeepers set up cages inside the zoo, with plates of Clyde's favorite fish in them, hoping to catch him.
Two days went by and still there was no sign of Clyde.
At last a couple saw Clyde at their house—a whole kilometer away in Newtown. Clyde was hiding in an out-of-reach hole outside their laundry.
The zookeepers arrived and set up some more traps to try to catch him. But Clyde is a pretty smart otter. Twice he managed to get the fish out of a trap without being caught.
Five days after he'd escaped, Clyde's days on the run came to an end when he was finally caught in one of the traps.
It was no good putting Clyde back in his old home—he'd only dig his way out again. So he and Bonnie were put into the zoo hospital. There was no chance of their escaping from there.
Meanwhile, the zookeepers were working hard to make Clyde's old home safer. They put an iron barrier underground to stop him digging his way out. Then Bonnie and Clyde went home again.
But a month after his first escape, Clyde was out again. Once more the zookeepers came hurrying to catch Clyde. They found him by following the bubbles he made in the river nearby.
Nobody knew how Clyde had escaped. But this time he was only out for an hour. So he went to the hospital again.
Poor Clyde. It seemed that he wasn't happy at Wellington Zoo, even though he and Bonnie were getting on well together. The keepers didn't like seeing him unhappy, so they planned to look for a home for him somewhere else.
4.Where was Clyde found after his first escape?
    A.Back in Auckland Zoo.
    B.In a river nearby.
    C.At a house a kilometer away.
    D.In the zoo hospital.
5.How did zookeepers find Clyde after his second escape?
A.They set up cages in the zoo.
    B.They attracted Clyde with fish.
C.They dug a hole outside his home.
D.They followed the bubbles in the water.
6.What do we know about Clyde?
    A.He often gets ill.
    B.He is good at digging.
C.He likes hiding in a hole.
    D.He escaped to meet Bonnie.

7.Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from?

Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported rubbish from other countries to keep its recycling plants going. Less than 1% of Swedish household waste was sent to landfills(垃圾填埋场) last year or any year since 2011.
We can only dream of such an effective system in the UK, which is why we end up paying expensive transport costs to send rubbish to be recycled overseas rather than paying fines to send it to landfills under the Landfill Tax of 1996.
Sweden has a culture of looking after the environment. “We Swedish people are aware of what we need to do on environmental issues. We worked on communications for long to make people not throw things outdoors so that we can recycle and reuse,” says Anna-Carin Gripwall, director of Avfall Sverige, the Swedish Waste Management and Recycling Association.
Over time, Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the freezing Swedish winter.
However, some people argue that the country is escaping real recycling. Paper plant managers say wood fiber can be used up to six times before it becomes dust. If Sweden burns paper before that point, it's exhausting the potential for true recycling and replacing used paper with fresh raw material.
Ms. Gripwall describes Sweden's policy of importing waste to recycle from other countries as a temporary situation. “There's a ban on landfill in EU countries, so instead of paying the fine, they send it to us as a service. They should and will build their own plants, to reduce their own waste, as we're doing in Sweden,” Ms. Gripwall says.
8.Why is a low amount of household waste sent to landfills in Sweden?
A.A little bit of household waste is produced here.
B.Its people get waste recycled at home.
    C.Much rubbish is imported overseas.
D.They have good public environmental awareness.
9.What measure is taken in the UK to deal with waste according to the text?
A.An effective recycling system is adopted.
B.People are encouraged to sell rubbish abroad.
C.People are forbidden to send waste to landfills.
D.An increasing number of landfills are being built.
10.What can we infer about Sweden's recycling system?
A.It's being spread around the world.
B.It's also thought to have some shortcomings.
C.It's so perfect to receive good evaluation.
D.It solves the problems with the local energy.
11.What opinion should Ms. Gripwall hold according to the text?
A.It's partly wrong to import rubbish from other countries.
B.The technology of handling waste will be developed wildly.
C.It's possible to completely solve all environmental problems.
D.All countries should work together to protect the environment.
    D
The wildfires damaging parts of Australia can be seen from space in new satellite images released by NASA. Australia's capital, Canberra, was enveloped in a smoky haze Sunday and air quality at midday was measured at 10 times the usual dangerous limit. “The damaging fires have killed at least 24 people in Australia and destroyed almost 2,000 homes. The early and damaging start of Australia's summer wildfires, fed by drought and the country's hottest and driest year on record, has also been catastrophic (灾难性的) for the country's wildlife, likely killing nearly 500 million birds, reptiles and mammals in New South Wales alone,” ecologist Chris Dickman in the University of Sydney told The Sydney Morning Herald.
Under such extreme conditions, the fires have been generating enough heat to create their own weather systems, including fire-generated thunderstorms and fire tornadoes. Thousands of firefighters continued to fight the flames that have burned millions of acres in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, an area twice the size of Maryland. In New South Wales, the Rural Fire Service (RFS) said as of Sunday there were 150 fires active in the state, 64 of them uncontrolled.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that, for the first time in Australian history, 3,000 army, navy and air force reservists (后备军人) will battle against the fires. He also committed $14 million to hiring fire-fighting aircraft from overseas. On Sunday, cooler temperatures and lighter winds brought some relief to threatened communities, a day after thousands of people were forced to escape as flames reached the suburban areas of Sydney. Thousands of firefighters fought to contain the fires, but many fires continued to burn out of control, threatening to wipe out rural townships and causing almost incalculable damage to property and wildlife.
12.What does the underlined phrase “fed by” in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A.Get food from someone.
    B.Be strengthened by something.
    C.Be destroyed by something.
    D.Under control of something.
13.Why were there thunderstorms and tornadoes?
A.Because the fires generated thunderstorms and tornadoes.
    B.Because there was rainy weather.
C.Because the fires generated enough heat to create extreme weather.
D.Because the weather system is easy to change.
14.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Many soldiers will fight against the fires as they have done before.
B.Fires were controlled due to cooler temperatures and lighter winds.
C.A lot of people moved out of the suburban areas.
D.Damage to property and wildlife is limited.
15.What would be the best title for this passage?
    A.Australia's destructive wildfires
    B.Soldiers fought against the fires
    C.Wildlife died from the fires
    D.Australia's wildfires were under control

If something that you're doing doesn't challenge you, then it doesn't change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. 16 So challenge the following limits:
1.Figure out what you're scared of and do it continuously.
If you're a salesman, and you're scared of talking to people personally or over the phone now, instead of being scared and thinking you'll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. 17 But don't stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look fear in the eyes and say, “Go on. I'm not scared!”
2.Take a class for a hobby you've been wanting to develop.
Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. 18 Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.
3.Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.
19 A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.
4.Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.
Don't just limit yourself to your fellow travelers—try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they're going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your trip. 20
    A.You should do it continuously.
B.Someone may hang up on you.
C.You don't need to go to the gym.
D.Running in the gym may be a better choice.
E.Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself.
F.Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on.
G.You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone.
    16. 17. 18. 19. 20.

My crippled(瘸腿) grandmother was dancing. I stood in the living room doorway, absolutely shocked. I heard her singing when I opened the door but did not want to interrupt her by shouting I had arrived. She was wearing beautiful dancing shoes and her legs obeyed her perfectly. As long as I could remember, she was once the pet of the dancing world. But it was all over after a sudden accident. She had always limped(一瘸一拐地走),helped by a cane(拐杖).
She turned around and saw me standing in the doorway. Her song ended, and her beautiful movements ended with it. Grandma turned towards the kitchen. She was walking with no difficulties in her beautiful shoes. I followed her, not believing my eyes.
“So...” I asked surprisedly but happily, “how did your leg heal(康复)?”
“To tell you the truth—my leg has been well all my life,” she said.
“But I don't understand!” I said. “I mean... You have pretended all these years?”
“Very much so,” Grandmother closed her eyes, “and for a very good reason.”
    “What reason?”
    “Your grandfather.”
“You mean he told you not to dance?”
“No, this was my choice. I am sure I would have lost him if I had continued dancing. I weighed fame(名声)against love and love won.”
“We were talking about the engagement(订婚)when your grandfather had to go to war. It was the most terrible day of my life when he left. I was so afraid of losing him, and the only way I could stay peaceful was to dance. And then one day a letter came. There were only three sentences:‘I have lost my leg. I am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom. It is best if you forget about me.'”
Grandma continued to tell me that Grandfather was in hospital and she made her decision not to give him up. She took her leave, and traveled away from the city.

They should and will build their own plants, to reduce their own waste, as we're doing in Sweden可知,Gripwall女士认为欧盟国家也将像瑞典一样建造自己的回收工厂,以减少浪费。
We can only dream of such an effective system in the UK, which is why we end up paying expensive transport costs to send rubbish to be recycled overseas rather than paying fines to send it to landfills under the Landfill Tax of 1996.
分析 which引导非限制性定语从句,指代整个主句且在从句中作主语,在从句中,why we end up paying expensive transport costs...

The early and damaging start to Australia's summer wildfires, fed by drought and the country's hottest and driest year on record, has also been catastrophic(灾难性的) for the country's wildlife可知,fed by后给出的是干旱和高温干燥的气候两个因素,由常识可知它们都会助长火势,“被某物增强”符合文意。
Under such extreme conditions, the fires have been generating enough heat to create their own weather systems, including fire-generated thunderstorms and fire tornadoes.
On Sunday, cooler temperatures and lighter winds brought some relief to threatened communities, a day after thousands of people were forced to escape as flames reached the suburban areas of Sydney.
The wildfires damaging parts of Australia can be seen from space...The damaging fires have killed at least 24 people in Australia and destroyed almost 2,000 homes. 故选A项。
    3.relief n.
The early and damaging start of Australia's summer wildfires, fed by drought and the country's hottest and driest year on record, has also been catastrophic (灾难性的) for the country's wildlife, likely killing nearly 500 million birds, reptiles and mammals in New South Wales alone.
The early and damaging start of Australia's summer wildfires has also been catastrophic;fed by drought...record为过去分词短语作后置定语;likely killing...Wales alone为现在分词短语作状语。

    One possible version:
    How should we keep healthy?
    Dear boys and girls,
Good health is essential to everyone, without which one can hardly live a satisfactory life. As students, under the great pressure of study, we shall attach importance to good health.
Here are some of my suggestions. First, we'd better take more exercise such as playing basketball, running or swimming to build up our body. Second, it is advised that we keep a balanced diet. Don't eat too much meat or sugar. Instead, more vegetables and fruit are a wiser choice. Third, it is of great importance to form good living habits. Please keep in mind that we shouldn't stay up late because it is extremely harmful to our health. Enough sleep and rest are beneficial to our growth. Last but not least, have a good mood and take a positive attitude towards whatever happens.
I hope we all live a healthy and happy life.
    Thank you!

    Para.2

    One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
Several weeks later, she returned. She had bought herself a cane and wrapped her leg tightly with bandages. She told everyone she had had a car crash and that her leg would never completely heal again. Her dancing days were over. No one suspected the story—she had learned to limp convincingly before she returned home. Then she traveled to the hospital. She saw my grandfather seated in his wheelchair with a cane on the ground nearby.
    Paragraph 2:
She took a deep breath, leaned on her cane and limped to Grandfather. She told him she had been in an accident and a leg was injured seriously. She showed him two engagement rings she had bought the day after he left for the war. “I was not going to waste them on any other man,” Grandma said to him. Then Grandfather bent to take his cane from the ground but Grandma was not going to help. And so he managed it on his own and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.
