Using 1900 as a starting point, here's a look at some of the most powerful and destructive hurricanes in the last 120 years in the US.
    Most powerful hurricanes
Hurricane Camille, which landed on August 17, 1969 near Waveland, Mississippi, is the most powerful storm to strike the Gulf Coast. Camille is one of the four category(级别)-5 hurricanes ever to make a landing in the US, the others being the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Michael in 2018.
According to the National Weather Service, the actual wind speed of Hurricane Camille might be around 175 mph along the coast.
Until the arrival of Hurricane Katrina, Camille's more than 24-foot storm wave in Pass Christian, Mississippi, held the record. Katrina's storm wave along the Mississippi coast reached 30 feet.
    Costliest hurricanes
Hurricane Katrina is not only the costliest-ever US hurricane, but also the most expensive natural disaster in the country's history. Not only did it cost as many as 1,836 lives and leave millions of people homeless, but it also caused $160 billion in damage.
Katrina landed near the Gulf Coast on August 29,2005 as a category-3 storm. The hurricane's record-breaking waves flooded 80% of the city.
    Deadliest hurricanes
The category-4 Hurricane Galveston made a surprising landing along the Texas coast on September 8,1900. It caused a 16-foot storm wave and its wind speed reached 150 mph.
A large part of the city of Galveston, Texas, was left in ruins. The number of deaths reached 12,000 on Galveston Island and the mainland. It remains the deadliest weather disaster in the US history as it gave the people no time to move out.

Yesterday I went to the nursing home to visit my grandma. She just got out of the hospital recently where she had some serious operations. I wanted to surprise her after work so I stopped by for a quick visit.
When I got there she was happy to see me. We hugged, kissed and exchanged greetings. Then I heard a woman crying. It was my grandma's roommate. The curtain was drawn so I could not see her. She started calling out a name that wasn't mine but she was certainly talking to me,begging me to go to her side of the room.
I ignored her at first and continued visiting with my grandma. Then she started begging and saying,“Please, come to see me!”So I went to see her.
When I drew back the curtain, she looked so old but flashed me the biggest smile! She opened her arms wide for me to hug her so I bent low and gave her a hug. I sat on her bed and talked with her for a few minutes. She kept calling me by the other name but I did not correct her. She told me stories as if I had been there when they happened.
Finally I went back to talk with my grandma. Then the woman started crying again, saying,“Please, come back.”She finally slept.
I stopped by the nurse's station and the nurse told me that the lady suffered from Alzheimer's disease. I mentioned the name she had called me. The nurse told me it was the lady's daughter's name. Then I understood why she wanted me to go to talk with her.
We will all get old someday. Some of us will have broken minds like my grandma's roommate and some of us will have broken bodies like my grandma. As I was leaving, I promised I would go back and visit the lady, even after my grandma moved back to her home.
4.Why did the author's grandma live in a nursing home?

6.What lesson did the author learn from her experience?
A.The old need care from others.
    B.The old will become forgetful.
    C.Everyone will get old someday.

You might not regard England, which is famous for its almost year-round rain, as a place with a water shortage problem. However, James Bevan, the head of the UK Environment Agency, warned at a recent conference that England would lack water within 25 years.
A major reason for the shortage is climate change. As recently as 2017, Britain saw its driest 10-month period in over 100 years. In 2018, below-average rainfall caused many reservoirs (水库) to run dangerously low. It's predicted that, by 2040, over half of UK summers will be hotter than the summer of 2003, and water supply from rivers could fall by between 50—80 percent, according to CNN. In 2003, the UK experienced one of the most significant heat waves in recorded history.
Another major reason is that the British waste too much water in daily life. On average each person uses about 140 liters of water per day through a combination of showers, washing machines and garden hoses, according to the BBC. Bevan said people should try to save water and that they could cut their daily water use from 140 to 100 liters. “There're simple steps we can take. For example, get a low-flush toilet, take short showers, and so on,” he said during the conference.
While England may not be the only place facing a water shortage, some other areas have taken measures to avoid one. Israel, for example, recycles waste water, which makes up 40% of the country's agricultural water.
Wherever you're in the world, water is precious. Our world is 70% covered by water, but only 2.5% of it is fresh, and only 1% is easily accessible. So let's try to save the water we're lucky enough to have and not be wasteful.
8.What is one of the main causes of the water shortage in England?
    A.The lack of rain.
    B.The waste in daily life.
    C.The climate change.
    D.The waste in agriculture.
9.What can be the best main idea of the passage?
A.English people are wasting too much water.
B.England may run short of water in the near future.
C.Climate change causes water shortage in England.
D.English people should solve the problem of water shortage.
10.What's the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To call on people to save water together.
B.To educate people on the importance of water.
C.To inform people of the water problem in England.
D.To introduce ways to solve the water shortage problem.
11.Where can you probably find the article?
    A.In a textbook. B.In a research report.
    C.In a travel journal. D.In a newspaper.
    D
Our solar system might be crazier than we once thought. Scientists say that deep within Uranus(天王星) and Neptune(海王星) it rains diamonds.
On Earth, diamonds form under extreme heat and pressure. The inside of Uranus and Neptune also has high temperatures and pressure. What's more, the blue planets are largely made up of icy water and gases such as methane(甲烷).
So scientists have long believed that deep inside the two planets, the heat and pressure turn the methane into hydrogen (氢)and carbon (碳). Then diamond rain would form, falling toward the center of the planets.
But no one could prove that this would really work—until now. In a study published recently in the journal Nature Astronomy, scientists said they were able to create this kind of “diamond rain” in a lab, reported The Guardian.
Scientists used high-powered lasers to create pairs of shock waves through a kind of plastic. The plastic is made from hydrogen and carbon, much like methane. The shock waves created high pressure and heat, like that inside Uranus and Neptune.
“The experimental time is very short,” Dominik Kraus, lead author of the study, told The Guardian. “That we saw this very clear signature of diamonds was actually very, very surprising.”
The diamonds created in the lab were teeny, only a few nanometers (纳米)wide. Scientists believe that diamonds would be much larger within Neptune and Uranus. Then they might slowly sink toward the planets' center because of gravity.
12.What factor is needed to form diamonds?
    A.Extreme heat and pressure.
    B.Hydrogen and carbon.
    C.Icy water and gases.
    D.High-powered lasers.
13.What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph?
    A.Unsuccessful. B.Small.
    C.Real. D.Natural.
14.How did scientists prove the theory of forming diamonds?
    A.By giving examples.
    B.By stating arguments.
    C.By explaining statistical data.
    D.By doing experiments.
15.What can be inferred from the text?
A.There are many high-powered lasers in Neptune and Uranus.
B.Deep inside Neptune and Uranus could be full of diamonds.
C.The shock waves inside Neptune and Uranus create high pressure and heat.
D.Scientists have long believed that there are diamonds inside Neptune and Uranus.

An apology is an expression of regret for something you've done wrong, and serves as a way to repair a relationship after that wrongdoing. We all need to learn how to apologize. 16 We all make mistakes, and we all have the ability to hurt people. It isn't always easy to apologize, but it's the most effective way to regain trust and balance in a relationship. Here is a four-step framework that you can use when you make an apology.
Every apology needs to start with two magic words:“I'm sorry” or “I apologize”. This is essential because these words express regret at your actions. Your words need to be sincere. Be honest about why you want to apologize. 17 Apologize as soon as you realize that you've wronged someone else.
Next, admit responsibility for your action or behavior. Here, you need to understand the person you wronged, and show that you understand how you made her feel. 18 Instead, simply try to put yourself in that person's shoes and imagine how she felt.
19 When you do so, you take action to make the situation right. For example, “If there's anything that I can do to make up to you, please just ask.” Think carefully about this step. Empty promises will do more harm than good. Because you feel guilty, you might give more than what's appropriate.
Your last step is to explain that you won't repeat the action or behavior. This step is important because you promise that you're going to change your behavior. This helps you rebuild trust and repair the relationship. 20 If you promise to change your behavior, but don't follow through, others will question your reputation and your trustworthiness.
    A.Don't make assumptions.
B.After all, no one is perfect.
    C.Timeliness is also important here.
D.Make up for the damage that was done.
E.We all need to learn how to forgive and forget.
F.You should try to see things from that person's angle.
G.Make sure that you keep your word in the days to come.
    16. 17. 18. 19. 20.

It was late spring, when my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing?”I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck here, so far from home. Fortunately, that wasn't the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It'll just be a minute,”she called back through the open windows.
Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back at the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist(接待员).”“What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven't received any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I asked again, “Did you leave your name?” To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough thanks for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deed, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passerby, since there had seen so few along the way.
    Paragraph 1:
I let out a sigh while my mom was leaning against the car worrying about what could be done.

    Paragraph 2:
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road.

根据Most powerful hurricanes部分第一段最后一句“Camille is one of the four category(级别)-5 hurricanes ever to make a landing in the US, the others being the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Michael in 2018.”
根据Costliest hurricanes部分第一句“Hurricane Katrina is not only the costliest-ever US hurricane, but also the most expensive natural disaster in the country's history.”
根据Deadliest hurricanes部分第一段第一句“The category-4 Hurricane Galveston made a surprising landing along the Texas coast on September 8,1900.”和第二段最后一句“It remains the deadliest weather disaster in the US history as it gave the people no time to move out.” 故选A。
根据第一段中的 “Yesterday I went to the nursing home to visit my grandma. She just got out of the hospital recently where she had some serious operations.”
根据第六段中的“The nurse told me it was the lady's daughter's name. Then I understood why she wanted me to go to talk with her.”
根据最后一段中的“We will all get old someday. Some of us will have broken minds like my grandma's roommate and some of us will have broken bodies like my grandma.” 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“As I was leaving, I promised I would go back and visit the lady, even after my grandma moved back to her home.” 根据第一段中的“She just got out of the hospital recently where she had some serious operations.”
    3.beg v.乞求 4.ignore v.忽视 5.correct v.纠正 6.suffer from 遭受 7.someday adv.
A major reason for the shortage is climate change.
根据第一段中的“However, James Bevan, the head of the UK Environment Agency, warned at a recent conference that England would lack water within 25 years.”
根据最后一段中的“So let's try to save the water we're lucky enough to have and not be wasteful.”

You might not regard England, which is famous for its almost year-round rain, as a place with a water shortage problem.
主句中regard...as... 看作……”,which is famous for its almost year-round rain 为定语从句,修饰先行词England,关系词在从句中作主语。
On Earth, diamonds form under extreme heat and pressure. 故选A。
Scientists believe that diamonds would be much larger within Neptune and Uranus. Then they might slowly sink toward the planets' center because of gravity. Scientists used high-powered lasers to create pairs of shock waves through a kind of plastic.

    One possible version:
    My Unforgettable Experience
Last summer holiday, in order to do something meaningful instead of staying at home, I got a job at a fast food restaurant as a cleaner. I worked eight hours a day for four weeks.
Every day I started off for work early in the morning and got home late in the evening. The job was hard and boring and seemed endless, which made me so tired that I nearly gave it up halfway. However, I finished it with determination. Although I met with a lot of difficulties in the work, it helped me understand better what labor means. I think it was really an unforgettable experience.

    Paragraph 1:
I let out a sigh while my mom was leaning against the car worrying about what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, Mom and I decided to walk back to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. What random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received them amazed us. While we were laughing and talking merrily, we received the news that the garage had got our car repaired.
    Paragraph 2:
As we drove alone, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I asked Mom to pull up and paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the pleasant scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger at her, I actually felt proud of her. This was a trip of my life.
