Mst plar bears culd disappear by the end f the century, scientists say. Glbal warming is t blame. Accrding t a study published this mnth in Nature Climate Change, mst plar bear ppulatins will be in serius decline by 2080. The cause is melting sea ice.
Plar bears hunt seals n the ice. Withut ice, the bears must wander n the shre, where they are spending mre and mre time away frm their main fd surce. That means the animals culd starve.
“There’s nt enugh fd n land t sustain a plar bear ppulatin,” Péter K. Mlnár tells The New Yrk Times. He is the study’s lead authr.
The lack f fd leads t anther prblem: Mther bears may nt be fat enugh t prduce milk fr their cubs. Sme bear ppulatins culd stp having babies, leading t a rapid decline in numbers.
Arctic sea ice usually melts in the spring and summer, then grws in the winter. But nw, the ice is taking lnger t grw back. Weather statistics say the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest f the planet. Ice in the regin has declined 13% every 10 years since the 1970s.
The Arctic is hme t rughly 25,000 plar bears. Scientists have lng knwn that the animals are in danger. This study, which lked at 13 f the wrld’s 19 plar bear ppulatins, is the first t identify when they culd disappear.

It will have t be a drastic reductin. Bringing emissins t nly a mderate level will still mean the lss f sme plar bears.

Mst f us bserved much mre as children than we d as adults. A child’s day is filled with fascinatin, newness and wnder. Curisity gave us all a natural awareness. Anther blck t awareness is the bsessin(痴迷) many f us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers wh sptted a bird, immediately lked it up in field guides, and said, a “ruby-crwned kinglet” and checked it ff. They n lnger paid attentin t the bird and never learned what it was ding.
The pressures f “time” and “destinatin”are further blcks t awareness. I encuntered many hikers wh were headed fr a distant campgrund with just enugh time t get there befre dark. It seldm ccurred t them t wander a bit, r t take a mment t see what’s arund them. I asked them what they’d seen. “Oh, a few birds,” they said. They seemed bent n their destinatins.
Nature seems t unfld t peple wh watch and wait. Next time yu take a walk, n matter where it is, take in all the prspects, sunds and sensatins. Wander in this frame f mind and yu will pen a new dimensin t yur life.
