There are many weird sports that are present around the world. From each region of the world, along with the very popular common sports, there are also those really popular but very weird kinds of sports.
The Ultimate Test Between Man and Horses
This is indeed a very strange kind of sport that tests your stamina(耐力). You will learn how to be agile(灵活的) while competing against a horse. This game originated in the Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells. This sport really has to do with strength. You will require great agility and strength in order to take part in this. Marathon human contestants are put to compete against those mounted people. This is how the marathon testing takes place.
Love Locked Races
This is a sports event that was first introduced in Finland. This is all about a male competitor racing with a female in a certain way. There would be many obstructions and blocks on the way which would definitely bring you challenges. The person to win would have to finish the race without losing his female partner in the course of overcoming the obstacles even for once. This race takes place really fast and the obstacles are set that way.
The Toe Sport
This is yet another weird sport that welcomes you to use your toes. This is quite the same kind of sport that you used to play as a child which involved toe wrestling. This has now been turned into a major sport that even has a World Toe Wrestling Competition. It first originated in a pub of Derbyshire.
The locals took this sport with great enjoyment and then made this so popular that it soon had its own championship. The individuals who participate have only got to use their feet and then this is tougher than it may sound.
The Mud Pit Belly Flop
This is a kind of game where even the spectators(观众) get splashed with mud but in fact that is quite the fun. The very annual Summer Redneck Games in East Dublin bring about this game and bring about some of the greatest hubcap-discus throws with it. This is also a great sport to show the strength and dexterity of your feet.

I had grown up in a football-loving family; my dad had played until injury forced him out.
My older sister Stevie trained with Crewe Alexandra Girls for a year or two as a left back just like our hero Jamie Carragher.
I remember the exact moment I told my dad I was interested in doing what my big sister did. I was watching the game with him in the living room as a pre-teen and it just came out, “It makes me sad that I can't be a footballer.” He asked why not, and I answered, “Because I'm not a boy.”
He immediately responded by telling me that women's football was “great” and that I could play if I wanted to. “Yeah, I suppose,” I responded, “but no one watches women's football.” Looking back I can see exactly why I felt like that.
At school, there was an unwritten rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were for the boys. I'd never seen a women's football match on TV; the only female athletes I'd heard of were in the Olympics.
Today, the Lionesses will take on Scotland in the World Cup. But although women's football has turned out to be one of the FIFA's best investments, the majority of female players in top tiers are earning under what anyone would consider a fair wage.
On Twitter you'll find that the most popular defence of those figures is that there's less money in the female side of the game because viewing statistics are lower than those from the male footballers, but the truth is that investment is needed for female football to become more visible and become an equally respected game.
Today, I'll be cheering on the Lionesses, and its coming home will mean more this time around, because it'll mean talented, skilful female footballers being broadcast into millions of homes and maybe, just maybe, a little girl believing that she can also be a lioness one day.
4.What do we know about Jamie Carragher?
A.He is the author's teacher.
B.He is a friend of the author's sister's.
C.He's on the Crewe Alexandra Girls.
D.He is an excellent footballer.
5.Which of the following best describes the author's father?
A.Strict. B.Encouraging.
C.Creative. D.Critical.
6.What does the author think of the unwritten rule at school?
A.Disappointing. B.Flexible.
C.Fair. D.Appealing.
7.What should people mainly do if they want to make female football better known?
A.Hold more matches.
B.Increase investment.
C.Employ more skillful female footballers.
D.Broadcast women's football matches.
C
Should we focus on our goal, or on the process?
What happened to Brenda Martinez, a US Olympic runner, may provide us with the answer. She lost her balance in the 800-meter run and failed to qualify for the Olympics. Instead of focusing on her failure, she prepared to win in the next race. “I just quickly let go of what happened in the 800m and got back to my routine, focusing on all the little things I could do to give me the best chance of running well later in the week,” she told New York Magazine. She said it was this mindset that led to her winning third place in the 1500-meter race about a week later to qualify for the Olympics in Rio. Instead of devoting herself to the goal of participating in the Olympics, she concentrated on the process.
There is a problem with setting goals. Researchers from Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern, found that overemphasizing goals based on measurable outcomes often leads to risk-taking, unethical(不道德的)behavior and reduced motivation. Their results were published in a Harvard Business School report titled “Goals Gone Wild: The Systematic Side Effects of Over-Prescribing Goal Setting.”
When you become overly focused on achieving the goal, you may lose sight of your original purpose for accomplishing the goal in the first place. Another danger is actually completing the goal without setting a plan for what's next. For example, some marathon runners experience what's called the “post-race blues”. Achieving your goal may cause you to drop the good habits that got you there in the first place. Dieters often experience this in what's called “yo-yo dieting” when they drop down to a desired weight, but then gain all the weight back when they resume(重新开始)their bad habits.
“After you set a goal, it's best to shift your focus from the goal itself to the process that gives you the best chance of achieving it and to judge yourself based on how well you complete that process,” columnist Brad Stulberg wrote on the website The Cut.
Ultimately, changing your attention from goals to the process will cause you to achieve little victories on your way to accomplishing long-term goals. Amy Cuddy, a Harvard Business School psychology professor, wrote that focusing on this process left you with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, regardless of the measurable outcome.
8.Why is Brenda Martinez's experience mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To show opportunity favors the prepared mind.
B.To describe how important it is to set big goals.
C.To suggest learning from failure can bring success.
D.To show how focusing on the process can lead to success.
9.According to Paragraph 3, what could overemphasizing goals bring about?
A.The use of unfair means.
B.Ignoring the whole picture.
C.Overestimating the setbacks.
D.Being stressed by the risks involved.
10.With the examples in Paragraph 4, the author intends to show that .
A.we can't focus on the goal too much
B.we must keep in mind why we set the goal
C.we should resume our habits when completing the goal
D.we should accept it is normal to feel down after success
11.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
A.Ways of judging a goal.
B.Ways to set long-term goals.
C.The best chance of achieving goals.
D.Benefits of focusing on the process.
D
The 90-minute long game involves two goals, black and white checkered balls, goalkeepers, and no hand use. This sport, of course, is soccer or football, as the majority of the rest of the world says. It's confusing that some countries call this sport “football” while Americans and Canadians say “soccer”, but apparently the British are mostly to blame.
The name confusion is actually thanks to British universities in the early 1800s who tried standardizing various sports games that had different rules and regulations to differentiate between them, according to a paper by Stefan Szymanski, a professor of sports economics at the University of Michigan.
Rugby, formerly known as “rugby football” or “rugger”, is a translation of “football” where you can use your hands. Soccer, originally “association football” or “asoccer”, is the traditional translation of “football” where people don't use their hands. People in England started shortening the names by dropping the “association” part of the phrase as well as the “a” in “asoccer”, per Szymanski's paper. If your head hurts from thinking about this, prepare to have your mind blown by these things you probably never thought about—until just now.
Now comes the complexity: in 1869, Rutgers and Princeton University held the first traditional and recorded game using a unique combination of rules from both rugby and soccer, creating what we know as “American football” and what other countries refer to as “gridiron”. Thanks to the popularity of American football, soccer players in America keep using “soccer” to help differentiate themselves, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica.
If the name “soccer” had stuck in Britain, and if Americans had come up with a better one for American football then, there would be much less confusion now. So why did the “football”, short kind of “association football” become more popular than “soccer” in England anyway? Originally, American influence on Britain during World War Ⅱ made “soccer” the popular term in England before the 1980s, the Atlantic reports. Once the sport became more popular in the United States around that time, the British stopped using “soccer”. Szymanski's paper claims it could be thanks to American and British news organizations pushing either term in each country.
12.What caused the name confusion in the early 1800s?
A.Game time. B.Sports rules.
C.Ball popularity. D.News organizations.
13.What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 3?
A.The name confusion is becoming stronger.
B.You cannot use your hands while playing games.
C.The names make it more difficult for people to understand.
D.Making the best of the head in the sports is extremely vital.
14.In which of the following do the two names belong to the same one?
A.“Rugby” and “soccer”.
B.“Rugger” and “American football”.
C.“American football” and “gridiron”.
D.“Gridiron” and “association football”.
15.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.The name confusion would become less.
B.The British disliked soccer during World War Ⅱ.
C.American soccer was more popular than English football.
D.History and culture had a great effect on the name.

Benefits of Sports
Doing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. It's a great way for children to take a break from studies and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have been proven beneficial to overall well-being.
The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious. Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, you'll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you're involved. 16 Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs. The training process helps promote physical fitness and performances in competitions.
17 Playing sports contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. A pat on the back, a high five(举手击掌) from a teammate, or a handshake after a match really boosts a child's confidence. Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise the self-worth. 18 So after a game, it's a better idea to ask “Did you enjoy the game?” rather than “Did you win?”
Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership. 19 Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. Teamwork breeds responsibility and challenges you to be responsible for your actions. Being part of a team gives you an opportunity to be a leader.
Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance studies and athletics. 20
There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to get involved in. Are you ready to go? Pick one and get moving!
A.It's not just your body that benefits from sports.
B.Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit.
C.But remember, a child's self-worth should not be distinguished by victory or loss.
D.If you play group sports, you'll be part of a team that takes direction from a coach.
E.Nearly every sport requires physical activities and the competitive skills.
F.Among these, learning how to function as part of a team is the most important advantage.
G.Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field.

My Favorite Sport
I first played ping-pong in our basement at home. My brother and I asked for an old wooden table from my grandfather. It was painted green. Although it was very simple, it served its purpose every day. My father never really played any other sports with me, but ping-pong was one that he played quite well and it took me plenty of time before I could beat him. My elder brother was also a very good competitor.
When I got to university, I was happy to discover a ping-pong table in the common room. I spent a great deal of time there, often until the midnight. There were about three or four friends that I often played against. We were all at the same skill level. One of them had ever played in a tournament. A friend from Germany said his father had ever won the German national tournament. We took part in a tournament. My ranking was the third place, but I had beaten the first and second place winners when we had played for fun. I sometimes played with other friends who didn't play ping-pong well, so I would use my left hand to give them an advantage. But after I became so skilled with my left hand, they no longer had the advantage.
Later, I played in a ping-pong competition which was held by my university. I lost at first. But because it was double elimination(双淘汰制), I went to the loser group. I beat all the players and then played against the student who had beaten me in the first round. Surprisingly, I beat him 3 times and won the competition.
Paragraph 1:
Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied.
Paragraph 2:
After the tournament I didn't often play the sport because of the busy study.

This is all about a male competitor racing with a female in a certain way.和The person to win would have to finish the race without losing his female partner in the course of overcoming the obstacles even for once.
由The Toe Sport中的This has now been turned into a major sport that even has a World Toe Wrestling Competition.
The Ultimate Test Between Man and Horses中的You will require great agility and strength in order to take part in this. 故选A项。
发源;起源 2.have to do with...与……有关 3.in the course of...
My older sister Stevie trained with Crewe Alexandra Girls for a year or two as a left back just like our hero Jamie Carragher.
He immediately responded by telling me that women's football was “great” and that I could play if I wanted to.
故选A。
3.unwritten rule不成文规则 4.hear of听说 5.take on...同……较量 6.turn out结果是 7.cheer on...
On Twitter you'll find that the most popular defence of those figures is that there's less money in the female side of the game because viewing statistics are lower than those from the male footballers, but the truth is that investment is needed for female football to become more visible and become an equally respected game.
She lost her balance in the 800-meter run and failed to qualify for the Olympics. Instead of focusing on her failure, she prepared to win in the next race.和She said it was this mindset that led to her winning third place...she concentrated on the process.
When you become overly focused on achieving the goal, you may lose sight of your original purpose for accomplishing the goal in the first place.和Achieving your goal may cause you to drop the good habits that got you there in the first place.
【高频词汇】 1.lose one's balance某人失去平衡 2.let go of放弃 3.concentrate on集中注意力于 4.motivation n.动力,积极性 5.lose sight of忽略;看不见 6.in the first place首先,起初 7. long-term adj.
I just quickly let go of what happened in the 800m and got back to my routine, focusing on all the little things I could do to give me the best chance of running well later in the week.
分析 what...800m是what引导的宾语从句,what在从句中作主语,focusing on... I could do to give me the best chance of running well later in the week,修饰先行词things,因为关系词在从句中作do的宾语,故关系词可以省略。
故选A。

Now comes the complexity: in 1869, Rutgers and Princeton University held the first traditional and recorded game using a unique combination of rules from both rugby and soccer, creating what we know as “American football” and what other countries refer to as “gridiron”.
分析 Now comes the complexity为表示时间的词Now置于句首引起的完全倒装;该句中using...

My Favorite Sport
My favorite sport is table tennis. I got a bat of table tennis as a birthday present at the age of nine and since then I have been playing it. I love it for several reasons.
Firstly, table tennis helps build up my body. Every time I play it, I am sweaty, which makes me feel relaxed and refreshed. What's more, table tennis helps develop my mind. When a ball flies over, I have to respond quickly, judge its speed and direction, predict its falling spot, and then hit it back in time.
Therefore, table tennis is a wonderful companion that I will keep all my life.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied. It was a tournament for university students. Players all came from the northern universities. And I felt very proud because I took part in it for my university. I believed that I could play pretty well. I expected to get a good ranking in the tournament. But I still felt very nervous, because I played against a student who was very excellent and had won many times. I played very hard and tried my best. Although I lost the tournament, it was a good practice.
Paragraph 2:
After the tournament I didn't often play the sport because of the busy study. But I played ping-pong with my friends when I was free. I thought it was a great deal of fun to play ping-pong with friends. It's also a good way to make our friendship closer and keep us healthier. We sometimes took part in a competition together, but we didn't care about winning or not. We all knew that a win was not everything. We just enjoyed playing together and had a wonderful time.

C.Employ more skillful female footballers.
D.Broadcast women's football matches.

故选A。
【高频词汇】 1.be to blame应承担责任 2.translation n. 普及,流行 4.come up with提出,想出
5.term n.
Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs.
Playing sports contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. 故选A。
18.C C项中的self-worth是前一句中的原词复现,且victory or loss与后一句中的“Did you win?”
Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership.(参加体育运动的孩子也可能从社交方面受益,感觉自己是群体的一部分,建立责任感和领导力。) Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome.
Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule.
【高频词汇】 1.regardless of 不管;不顾 2.contribute to 有助于 3.participate in 参加 4.leadership n.
Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership.
Children;feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership为现在分词短语作状语。

故选A。

My Favorite Sport
My favorite sport is table tennis. I got a bat of table tennis as a birthday present at the age of nine and since then I have been playing it. I love it for several reasons.
Firstly, table tennis helps build up my body. Every time I play it, I am sweaty, which makes me feel relaxed and refreshed. What's more, table tennis helps develop my mind. When a ball flies over, I have to respond quickly, judge its speed and direction, predict its falling spot, and then hit it back in time.
Therefore, table tennis is a wonderful companion that I will keep all my life.
