A
In a world with so many countries, religions, tribes and customs, it is impossible for everyone to like everything. While we have come a long way since civilization began, some communities are stuck with age-old traditions.
Famadihana—dance with the dead
A funeral(葬礼)tradition followed by the Malagasy people in Madagascar, people dance with dead bodies as part of the Famadihana custom. After bringing bodies of their ancestors from the burial place, they rewrap them in fresh cloth and dance around the tomb to live music. The ritual is followed once in seven years, but has been in decline.
Venezuela—don't show up on time
Venezuelans are just like Indians! Arriving on time is considered rude in Venezuela and it is recommended to arrive at least 15 minutes later than the scheduled time. Guests who arrive on time are looked down upon as being too eager and greedy. Well, Venezuelans should take their cue from Indians!
India—throw the baby for good luck
This custom is mostly followed in Karnataka where newborn babies are thrown from the roof of the Sri Santeswar temple. The babies are obviously caught by the family in a cloth. Couples who are blessed with a baby take a vow at the temple following this 500-year-old tradition, which is believed to bring good luck to the babies.
Scotland—just blacken the bride
Having some fun before the wedding is great, but this pre-wedding custom in Scotland doesn't seem to have a lot of fun for the bride. The custom involves throwing eggs, spoilt milk and basically, all things disgusting her. The “blackened bride” is then taken around the town. The custom is a metaphor for the tough life that the bride might have to go through after the wedding. The tradition prepares her for the new chapter as after going through this, all marital(婚姻的)problems will look tiny.

It was the last time Susan Butcher ran the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1992.An hour into the race, Susan and her sled dog team sped down a hill and crashed into a fallen tree. Although hurt, Susan continued the difficult race.
The Iditarod Race started in 1925 when a doctor in Nome, Alaska was desperately in need of medicine to stop the spread of a deadly disease. Only a hospital had what he needed, but it was 700 miles away! In January, it was too dangerous to send a boat and too stormy for his tiny airplane. The only hope was to use several sled dog teams following a trail, called the Iditarod Trail. They passed the medicine from one sled team to another. Wind and snow did not stop the men and their dogs. The medicine was delivered in record time. The race follows the route of the famous medicine run. Over 1,000 miles long, it is considered the toughest race in the world.
Susan Butcher was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In her teens Susan was given a Siberian husky dog and became very interested in huskies as sled dogs. After reading about the Iditarod Race, Susan moved to Alaska. She got several jobs to earn money to buy herself a sled and a team of huskies. After years of hard work and training, Susan achieved her dream of racing on the Iditarod Trail.
In 1978, at the age of 24, Susan entered the race for the first time and became the first woman to finish in the top 20. In 1982 she came in second. In 1984 she was leading her team across a frozen waterway when they fell into the water. Her lead dog managed to pull Susan and the other dogs out of danger. Remarkably, she came in second.
In her fourth race, in 1985, a starving moose(驼鹿) attacked her dogs, killing two and injuring eleven. Susan had to leave the race. In 1986 Susan joined the race again. This time, she won. She won again in 1987. In 1988 she became the first person ever to win three Iditarod races in a row. Unbelievably, Susan won for the fourth time in 1990.
4.How many times did Susan Butcher enter the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race?
A.At least six times.
B.At least seven times.
C.At least eight times.
D.At least nine times.
5.What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 2?
A.How the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race began.
B.How the spread of a deadly disease was stopped.
C.How tough the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was.
D.How Susan Butcher began to show interest in the race.
6.What does the underlined phrase “in a row” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A.Continuously. B.Eventually.
C.Remarkably. D.Respectively.
7.What led to some of Susan Butcher's failures?
A.Snowstorm. B.Lack of food.
C.Accidents. D.Lack of experience.
C
There are a lot of things that people fill their stomachs with. Some of them keep people alive. Some of them taste good to people. Some of them help people win pie-eating contests. Alcohol does none of those things. Why do people keep drinking it? And what does it do once it gets to their stomachs?
There are all kinds of alcohol molecules(分子),but the one that people most often pour down their throat is ethanol (乙醇). Ethanol is very tiny and it dissolves in water, so it gets into all sorts of places that it's not supposed to. Alcohol heads for the digestive system. Because it dissolves in water, it can get into the water in the bloodstream. Because ethanol, to a certain extent, can pass through cell membranes(膜), it can go almost anywhere. It spreads through the muscles, and is sweated—unmetabolized(未经新陈代新的) and whole—through the skin. It gets into the heart. It even takes a walk through the brain, and this is the secret of its powers.
Alcohol depresses the nerves, and the nerves affect almost every area of the body. Enough alcohol makes people sleep, so people who become unconscious choke on their own vomit(呕吐物). Most worryingly, enough alcohol can shut down those parts of the brain just like any other parts. People become unconscious and their brains simply forget to breathe.
Alcohol is broken down in the liver. Alcohol doesn't destroy the liver, but products that the liver breaks the alcohol into do cause damage. A glass of wine per day cannot do any harm. Instead, it can prevent heart attacks or can make someone functionally young. And it is kind of nice to know that sometimes, relaxation and cheer can be bottled. All that's needed is to take care how much alcohol is let into a person's brain.
8.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By stating facts. B.By asking questions.
C.By arguing. D.By explaining.
9.Why can alcohol reach the brain?
A.Because it can move through water molecules in the blood.
B.Because it is small enough to get through any narrow space.
C.Because it is so light that the bloodstream can transport it.
D.Because it is absorbed only by the cells in the stomach.
10.What suggestion does the author give on drinking alcohol?
A.Controlling the time of drinking.
B.Controlling the amount of drinking.
C.Choosing the kind of drink.
D.Choosing the place of drinking.

Over the next 50 years, we are going to send more and better robots to Mars. 11 There is a limit to what robots can tell us, though, so eventually we will have to send people to study the planet.
Before people can visit Mars, we need to invent a spaceship that can take us there. 12 Depending on where Mars and Earth are in their orbits around the sun, it could take between six months and a year to get there.
The moon is much closer, and we were there many years ago. Over the next 10 years, we are going to work on building a new spacecraft. 13
Once we return to the moon, we are going to build a station so that people can live and work on the moon for months at a time. This is important so that we have a place to start from when we want to visit Mars. 14
By the time you are old enough to be an astronaut, we will have people spending months on the moon. By the time you are old enough to be a commander of a space mission, we will be taking trips to Mars. By the time your kids are old enough to be astronauts, we may have people living on Mars. Wouldn't it be cool to get a postcard from someone who was building a house on Mars? 15
A.Mars is very far away.
B.People will go to live on Mars one day.
C.Wouldn't it be cooler if it was you who sent the postcard?
D.Using this craft, we will practice the skills we need to go to Mars.
E.Those robots will send back better pictures, maps, and weather reports.
F.It would be possible for us to go to Mars in a spacecraft in the near future.
G.This is also important because it gives us practice about living away from Earth.

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. “Daddy,” she said softly, “why won't you come back?”
Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it. “Daddy will be home soon,” she'd tell her mother. “He's at work.” When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father. “I miss you, Daddy,” she'd say. “When will you come back?” Desiree's situation made her mother worried.
Days later, it was Ken's birthday. “How will I send him a card?” Desiree asked her mother. “How about if we tie a letter to a balloon,” her mother said, “and send it up to heaven?” Desiree's eyes immediately lit up.
Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid. Desiree and her father had often watched it. The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her dad. “Daddy, happy birthday, I love you and miss you,” she rattled off (飞快说出). “I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.”
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let the balloon fly. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till it disappeared. “Now Dad's going to write back to me,” Desiree said confidently.
Every day after they'd released the balloon, Desiree asked her mother, “Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet?” Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.
Paragraph 1:
One day, 3,000 miles away, Wade was on a duck hunt when suddenly something in the bushes caught his eye.

Venezuela—don't show up on time部分里提到的“Arriving on time is considered rude in Venezuela”,可以判断选B。
Couples who are blessed with a baby take a vow at the temple following this 500-year-old tradition, which is believed to bring good luck to the babies.

由第二段的首句中的“The Iditarod Race started in 1925 when a doctor in Nome”以及后面的内容可知,本段主要告诉我们艾迪塔罗德狗拉雪橇比赛是如何开始的,故A选项正确。
由最后一段中的“In 1986 Susan joined the race again. This time, she won. She won again in 1987. In 1988 she became the first person ever to win three Iditarod races in a row.”
根据最后一段中的“In her fourth race, in 1985,a starving moose attacked her dogs, killing two and injuring eleven. Susan had to leave the race”可知,在她1985年的第四场比赛中,一只饥饿的驼鹿攻击她的狗,死两只狗,伤十一只。苏珊不得不退出比赛。由此推测,是一场意外事故导致苏珊退赛。

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
One day, 3,000 miles away, Wade was on a duck hunt when suddenly something in the bush caught his eye. Curious, he approached to find a silver balloon, with a piece of paper at the end of the string, wrapped in plastic. Taking it home, Wade read the touching lines to his wife Donna. She was deeply moved. With tears in her eyes, Donna decided to help Desiree. The couple went to buy a birthday card and an adaptation of The Little Mermaid, and then she began to write a letter to Desiree.
Paragraph 2:
Desiree's fifth birthday came and later in the afternoon, a package arrived. Looking at the unfamiliar return address, Desiree's mother was confused. Suddenly an idea struck her: the balloon! She opened the parcel and found a card with “For a Dear Daughter”. Her heart raced. She rushed to Desiree's room and showed her the letter. “It's from Daddy!” Desiree jumped with joy, asking her mother to read it to her. “Happy birthday, my little angel!” Her mother began. Tears began to trickle down Desiree's cheeks.
附加题
when多余,故去掉when。
