【语篇导读】约翰·弥尔顿,伟大的诗人。很多文学批评家都认为,英国诗人中除了莎士比亚之外,当首推弥尔顿。他生于伦敦,在剑桥大学的克莱斯特学院获得学士和硕士学位后,便开始专心于诗歌创作。由于过度疲劳,弥尔顿于1652年双目失明。弥尔顿在失明后创作了不朽的史诗《失乐园》《复乐园》和希腊式悲剧《力士参孙》。 弥尔顿死于1674年11月8日,死后他与乔叟、莎士比亚齐名。
Jhn Miltn’s Early LifeJhn Miltn was brn in December 1608.Miltn started t write petry when at cllege, but since he had always been independently①minded, he had nt been a very ppular pupil at schl.

Thanks t his father’s successes — generus understanding f his sn’s linguistic③ and petical talents — Miltn was able t spend six years cntinuing t develp his knwledge f languages, including Latin, Greek, French, Italian and Hebrew as well as writing. He then headed ff t Eurpe fr a grand tur.
He was hugely stimulated④ by the peple he met there — including Galile. Miltn believed that there were greater tasks t undertake as a writer. He believed that it was very imprtant fr him t express plitically and scially in his time. When he heard f a civil war in England, he returned.
Fr the next twenty years he dedicated his life t plitics. During the Civil War, he taught, and als released⑤ his ideas n educatin, plitics and religin, which brught him t the attentin f the gvernment fficials. On a persnal level his life went thrugh a mst difficult part in his cuntry. In 1642 he married Mary Pwell, half his age and frm a Ryalist⑥ family. Unsurprisingly it was nt a success. The cuple had a child, Anne; and — nce they had mved away frm Mary’s family — a secnd girl was brn.
In 1651 their sn Jhn was brn, and in 1652 a third daughter, Debrah. But his wife died fllwing the birth, and his sn died nly mnths later. In that same year, Miltn became ttally blind. He had been aware that his eyesight was getting frm bad t wrse. But he wuld be n mre likely t reduce his reading and writing.
