Ⅳ. Art museums are places where people can learn about various cultures. The increasingly popular “design museums” that are opening today, however, perform quite a different role. Unlike most art museums, the design museums show objects that are easily found by the general public. These museums sometimes even place things like fridges and washing machines in the centre of the hall. People have argued that design museums are often made use of as advertisements for new industrial technology. But their role is not simply a matter of sales—it is the honour of excellently invented products. The difference between the window of a department store and the showcase in a design museum is that the first tries to sell you something, while the second tells you the success of a sale. One advantage of design museums is that they are places where people feel familiar with the exhibits. Unlike the average art museum visitors, design museum visitors seldom feel frightened or puzzled. This is partly because design museums clearly show how and why mass-produced products work and look as they do, and how design has improved the quality of our lives. Art museum exhibits, on the other hand, would most probably fill visitors with a feeling that there is something beyond their understanding. In recent years, several new design museums have opened their doors. Each of these museums has tried to satisfy the public’s growing interest in the field with new ideas. London’s Design Museum, for example, shows a collection of mass-produced objects from lighters to electric typewriters to a group of Italian fish-tins. The choices open to design museums seem far less strict than those to art museums, and visitors may also sense the humorous part of our society while walking around such exhibits as interesting and unusually attractive toys collected in our everyday life. 1.Why are showcases in design museums different from store windows?A.They show more technologically advanced products.B.They help increase the sales of products.C.They show why the products have sold well.D.They attract more people than store windows do.2.The choices open to design museums . However, before having wonderful relationships with others, we first should have them with ourselves. Strangely, this is often the hardest relationship of all. Here are three ways of gaining better personal understanding of deeper love. Listen closely to your thoughts. Your thoughts will determine your actions. One thing that will help you to listen to your thoughts is keeping a journal. It helps to record the understanding you gain as you go about your life. It is not necessary for you to write in it every day. You might use a small notebook in your pocket to record your thoughts as they occur to you. Be honest with yourself. Actions speak louder than words. If you say you love your job, but your actions say otherwise, which do you think is more reliable(可信赖的)—your words or your actions? On the other hand, if you say you’re not good at a certain job, but your actions say otherwise, that’s also important. What do you do with this insight? You can use it to make positive choices in your life. Remember you are judged by what you do, not by what you say. Take quiet time to listen to the voice inside you. This is similar to the first point, but it takes a step further. You may want to use your quiet time to think deeply. However you use this time, the key is to shut out all of the noise around you by focusing deep within yourself. Breathing deeply during quiet time will also help you focus. Quiet time can really make a difference to your life. 1.What’s the main idea of the text?(no more than 10 words) 2.What does the writer think is the hardest relationship of all?(no more than 5 words) 3.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “journal” in paragraph 2?(1 word) 4.How are we judged according to the third paragraph?(no more than 10 words) 5.Which of the three ways is the most suitable for you? Why?(no more than 25 words) 答案:Ⅰ.1.definition 2.to/towards 3.influential 4.increasingly 5.subjective 6.to show 7.memorial 8.exhibition 9.recognition 10.permanentlyⅡ.1.concentrate on 2.have been set apart 3.is fond of 4.in particular 5.A collection of 6.in time 7.was brought to lifeⅢ.1.It is impossible to describe 2.what people and the world really look like 3.not; but; that counts/matters 4.are thought to come from 5.what is in store for meⅣ.【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段最后一句 “The difference between the window of a department store and the showcase in a design museum is that the first tries to sell you something, while the second tells you the success of a sale.” 根据第四段的 “The choices open to design museums seem far less strict than those to art museums...” 故选A项。 根据全文内容尤其是第一段第二句“The increasingly popular ‘design museums’ that are opening today, however, perform quite a different role.” Ⅴ.1.How to gain better personal understanding of deeper love. 2.Relationships with ourselves. 3.Diary. 4.By what we do. 5.The second one.
