W: When I was younger I was in an organization called the Guides. Guides are girls who are between 10 and 14 who get together once a week to do things like having competitions and playing games and going camping. I really enjoyed being in the Guides. There’s a similar organization called the Scouts for boys although I think these days girls can be Scouts and maybe boys can be Guides — I’m not sure. Anyway I used to go camping quite a lot with Guides. I remember I went one weekend and it was the same weekend as my birthday and I was going to be 13 that weekend. We had a really good weekend. We cooked different things and we played games. We didn’t really get much sleep as you generally don’t when you’re sleeping in a tent with a lot of people at your age. You tend to stay up all night.
So on my birthday which was on Sunday, everybody sang Happy Birthday to me and they gave me a cake and they wrote a card for me and I had a really nice day. That evening I went home and I was so tired and I started to unpack my things. And then the doorbell rang and my friend arrived and then one by one — it was very strange — all of my friends arrived, and what had happened was my parents had organized a wonderful birthday party for me! I was so excited. We had a great time. We went bowling and it was really a day to remember.
I’m a TV show host. One Sunday, I took my 7-year-old daughter by the sea for lunch. On arriving at the beach, I saw JoJo, a rich man in the hotel business. We sat down to chat in an open-air cafe.
Suddenly our talk was interrupted (打断) by a stranger, who politely asked permission to speak to me. Often people want to tell me something about my TV show, when I’m out on the streets.
He asked to speak to me alone, so we stood a bit away from my table. He said, “I’m James, 35 years old, father of a 7-year-old girl, who’s very sick. She needs treatment abroad. The doctors said that if she was treated in the UK, she would probably survive. But I’m poor, so can you please help me?”
Speechless, I looked at the man whose eyes were full of tears and asked how I could help. After we talked for a while, I went to sit back at the table. JoJo asked me, “What’s wrong with you? Your face changed.” I told him. JoJo was sorry for this family and said I had the means through the media to help him. Later we headed off to our destinations.
All weekend I thought about James, his daughter and his family. I even thought about doing a special TV show to raise money for this sick child.
On Monday morning I was at the office after I finished hosting my show, when my assistant said a man needed to speak to me. It was JoJo. He walked into my office. JoJo is so busy with his hotel business that I never imagined he had time to come and see me at the studios.
“Please, call the man with the sick child and tell him that I’ll pay all the money for his sick daughter’s treatment,” JoJo said, with a cheque (支票) in his hand. “I’ve been married for 35 years. I wasn’t lucky enough to have a child. I want to help this child now.” I picked up the phone to call James.
Now James’ daughter is well and living a normal life. JoJo often visit her. I’m so happy that there are so many good people on earth.

Everyone has a phone in their pocket nowadays, but how often do we really use them for their original purpose—to make a call? Telephone culture is disappearing. What brought us to this moment, and what are its effects?
“No one picks up the phone anymore,” wrote Alex C.Madrigal on The Atlantic. “The reflex (习惯性动作) of answering—20th-century telephonic culture—is gone.”
The shift is of course due in large part to more communication options: Texting with photos, videos, emojis, reaction gifs, links and even voice messages can be a more attractive option.
Texting is light and fun, not nearly as demanding of your attention as a phone call. It can also be done with multiple people at the same time. Social media, email and video calls have also eaten away at traditional phone calls.
In recent years, another reason has caused people to ignore phone calls completely: robocalls. Robocalls are automate (自动化的) messages from organizations verifying (核实) your phone number or telemarketers trying to sell something. Americans received 22.8 billion robocalls halfway through 2020, equaling an annual rate of 45.6 billion, slightly below 2018 numbers, according to YouMail, a robocall protection service and blocking app.
As telephone culture disappears, what is the loss of a singular family phone doing to the family unit? Early landline phones unified family members, whereas mobile phones isolate (隔离) them.
“The shared family phone served as an anchor (精神支柱) for home,” said Luke Fernandez, a Weber State University computer-science professor and co-author of Bored, Lonely, Angry, Stupid: Feelings About Technology, From the Telegraph to Twitter. “With smart phones, we have gained mobility and privacy. But the value of the home has been reduced, as has its ability to guide and monitor family behavior and perhaps connect families more closely, ”Fernandez said.
Of course, as technology progresses, lives always change for better or for worse. With the loss of telephone culture, families will need to find other ways to unite.
24.What has caused the traditional telephone to lose its appeal according to the text?
A.People’s wide range of communication choices.
B.People’s growing need for privacy
C.People’s addiction to social media
D.People’s preference for robocalls
25.What can we infer from Fernandez’s remark?
A.The value of home depends on how phones are used.
B.The use of mobile phone has affected family connections.
C.Smart phones make families closer.
D.Smart phones help people monitor family behavior.
26.What does the article mainly talk about?
A.The relation between phone use and family connections
B.The development of communication tools.
C.The past and future of telephone
D.The downfall of traditional telephone culture.
24.A
25.B
26.D
根据第二段“The reflex (习惯性动作) of answering—20th-century telephonic culture—is gone.(接电话的习惯性动作——21世界电话文化——消失了)”和第三段“The shift is of course due in large part to more communication options: Texting with photos, videos, emojis, reaction gifs, links and even voice messages can be a more attractive option.(当然,这种转变在很大程度上是由于更多的交流选择:用照片、视频、表情符号、反应动图、链接甚至语音信息发短信都是更有吸引力的选择)”可知,正是许多新的交流方式出现,让传统电话失去了吸引力。故选A项。
25.
根据第七段Fernandez的评论“With smart phones, we have gained mobility and privacy. But the value of the home has been reduced, as has its ability to guide and monitor family behavior and perhaps connect families more closely, (智能手机让我们获得了移动性和隐私性。但家的价值降低了,因为引导、监管家庭行为的能力和让家庭更可能紧密地联系在一起的能力降低了)”可知,Fernandez认为智能手机或者移动电话会降低家庭成员间的联系。故选B项。
26.
主旨大意题。通读全文并结合第一段“Telephone culture is disappearing. What brought us to this moment, and what are its effects? (电话文化正在消失。是什么把我们带到了这一刻?它带来了什么影响?)”可知,文章介绍了传统电话文化消失的原因和影响,D项“The downfall of traditional telephone culture.(传统电话文化的衰落)”是最佳大意。故选D项。
You’re rushing to school and a man ahead of you suddenly falls down. Do you stop to help? In a study of bystanders, it was found that some people look away or keep on walking rather than stop and get involved.
“There is an inclination (倾向) to decide that no action is needed,” says Ervin Staub, a psychologist (心理学家) at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, who studies the role of bystanders. “The first thoughts that come into your mind often keep you from offering help.”
Time and again, good and caring people fail to come to the aid of others. They know they should act and yet, for reasons they themselves don’t understand, people sometimes don’t respond. Longtime researchers of bystander behavior continue to struggle with the question, “Why?”
One thing we do know is that the more ambiguous a situation is, the less likely people are to help. Let’s say you see vapors (水汽) coming out of a building. You ask yourself,“Is it steam (蒸汽) or smoke?” If you are not sure, you look to other people for a clue about how to react. If you see other people doing nothing, you think, “Of course, that’s just steam.” You don’t want it to be smoke, because then you would have to do something about it.
Another one is known as "the bystander effect". This says that the more people there are observing an emergency (突发事件), the less responsible each one of them personally feels. For example, if you are the only person in the world who can act to save someone in a dangerous situation, you are more likely to act. However, if you are one of 100,000 people who could save the situation, you would be happier if one of the other 99,999 people did it!
“If you notice trouble, force yourself to stop and judge the situation instead of walking on,” says Ervin Staub. Then try to involve other people; you don’t have to take on all the responsibility of being helpfu1. According to Staub, it is sometimes just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, “It looks like we should do something.” Once you take action, most people will take their cues (提示) from you and also help.
27.According to Ervin Staub, when accidents happen, people’s first thoughts ________.
A.prevent them from helping B.force them to give a hand
C.often lead to embarrassment D.depend on others’ reaction
28.What does the underlined word “ambiguous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.dangerous B.difficult
C.unclear D.unpleasant
29.The author uses “the bystander effects” to show that ________.
A.many people have the same ideas
B.more people carry out more responsibility
C.people usually think a lot before difficulties
D.people tend to behave in the same way as most other people do
30.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Don’t Just Stand There B.Stick to Your Decision
C.Think Before You Leap D.It’s the Thought that Counts
27.A
28.C
29.D
30.A
根据第二段最后一句话 “The first thoughts that come into your mind often keep you from offering help.(你脑海中浮现的第一个想法往往会阻止你提供帮助)” 可知,当遇到意外时,人们的第一个想法常常阻止他们去帮忙。故选A项。
28.
根据第四段举的例子“Let’s say you see vapors (水汽) coming out of a building. You ask yourself,“Is it steam (蒸汽) or smoke?” If you are not sure, you look to other people for a clue about how to react. If you see other people doing nothing, you think, “Of course, that’s just steam.” You don’t want it to be smoke, because then you would have to do something about it.” 所以, “One thing we do know is that the more ambiguous a situation is, the less likely people are to help.”
根据第五段“This says that the more people there are observing an emergency (突发事件), the less responsible each one of them personally feels.”
根据最后一段““If you notice trouble, force yourself to stop and judge the situation instead of walking on,” says Ervin Staub. Then try to involve other people; you don’t have to take on all the responsibility of being helpfu1. According to Staub, it is sometimes just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, “It looks like we should do something.” Once you take action, most people will take their cues (提示) from you and also help.(Ervin Staub说:“如果你注意到麻烦,强迫自己停下来,对情况做出判断,而不是继续走。然后试着让其他人参与进来;你不需要承担起提供帮助的所有责任。根据Staub的说法,有时只是转向你旁边的人说,“看起来我们应该做点什么。”一旦你采取行动,大多数人会从你那里得到暗示,也会帮助你)”可知,作者在前面列举并分析了这种社会现象之后,在最后一段提出自己的观点:当周围有人遇到困难时,要行动起来,让尽可能多的人参与其中,去帮忙。A项”不要只是旁观”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选A项。

根据空前“But first, you should make sure if you're experiencing some serious illnesses.(首先,你应该确定你是否患有一些严重的疾病。)”和空后“keep these tips in mind.(记住这些提示。)”
根据空前“The second thing to work on is to go to sleep early enough to get a full night's sleep, preferably so that you wake up naturally without the need for your alarm.(第二件事要做的是早点睡觉,这样可以睡一整晚,早晨最好自然醒来而不需要闹钟。)”和空后“Thus, another useful tip is to take a nap during the afternoon.(因此,另一个有用的建议是在下午小睡一会儿。)”
根据空前“The best length of time for a nap is about 20 minutes. Shorter, and you won't get much out of it.(再短一点,你就没什么收获了)”可知,E项(再长一点,你可能会发现晚上很难入睡)能够承接上文。
根据空后“Drinking plenty of water and fluids throughout the day is one important way to stay energized, since dehydration leaves us in low sprits.(每天多喝水等液体饮品是保持活力的一个重要途径,因为脱水会让我们情绪低落。)”
根据空前“Be aware also that people who are overweight are more likely to experience tiredness easily.(还要注意,体重超重的人更容易感到疲劳。)” 故选A项。

It was an Art lesson. Rachel sat at the desk watching her classmates busy preparing the water jars and paints. She understood why Mrs. Weston asked her to sit down and got Lisa to fetch everything for her. It was always a disaster when Rachel tried to do Art!
Rachel sighed and reached out to dip her brush in some black paint and—oh, no! She knocked over the jar. The water spread across the desk and drowned the paper. Lisa called Mrs. Weston to see what Rachel had done. Rachel went red in the face, She jumped to her feet to get a cloth. Her chair fell over backwards. She turned round and her paintbrush caught Lisa across the face, giving her a black moustache. Lisa was so surprised that she fell back against a wire bookstand. It came crashing down and the books went all over the floor.
How clumsy (笨手笨脚的) ! Rachel thought as she went home on the bus: The bus stopped outside her house. She jumped up and her elbow (肘部) knocked a woman's hat right over her eyes. Oh, no! Rachel said sorry, got off and ran indoors. Mum wasn't in the kitchen but lay in bed as she caught an awful cold. Rachel offered to make a cup of tea but Mum would rather wait for Dad. Rachel sighed. She understood Mum was afraid she would spill (减出)it.
“But would you go to Mrs. Willow for some cold cure?” asked Mum. Rachel turned to the door at once.“But Rachel, Mrs. Willow's house is full of beautiful things like china figures (瓷器) and delicate (精致的,易碎的) vases, so if she asks you to come in, you'd better say no.” Rachel sighed and ran out.
Mrs. Willow was an old lady with white hair and sharp blue eyes living in an old house. She opened the door and invited her in. Rachel said why she came and that she preferred to wait outside remembering her mother's warning. Mrs. Willow insisted Rachel come inside. Rachel took a deep breath and stepped in. Rachel was so surprised that she jumped backwards. It was a cat! But her elbow hit a vase and it fell to the floor, broken. How awkward!
With a smile Mrs. Willow comforted her saying it had been broken before. Rachel sighed and stared at her. “I did, when I was young. You couldn’t have been as clumsy as I was,” Mrs. Willow said, her sharp blue eyes shining. “Keep telling yourself you are a swan and it will work.” Rachel doubtfully said that several times. After they cleared up the vase, they drank tea from china cups and ate cakes off delicate plates and Rachel didn’t break another thing. It was a kind of magic. Rachel smiled.
