Sunscreen protects our skin from sunburn. But did you know that it is harmful to coral living in the ocean?
Some chemicals in sunscreen, such as benzophenone, can kill coral. Every year, about 4,000 to 6,000 tons of sunscreen will flow into coral areas, according to the US National Park Service.
About one and half years ago, Zhang Baoxin, 17, who studies at Guangdong Experimental High School, read about this in an article. Then she had an idea – to make an environmentally friendly sunscreen to protect the marine environment.
To make this happen, Zhang read lots of literature and then put forward a new formula. She mixed natural plant oils with safe and commonly-used sunscreen ingredients, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide powder .
She tested about 10 kinds of plant oils, including jojoba oil and coconut oil, to figure out whether they can take in sunlight. She then used a microscope to find out if the oil could be mixed with the powder. After trying about 20 formulas, Zhang found a jojoba oil formula that is effective, cheap and easy to make.
Zhang wrote a paper to explain her findings with her experimental process and data. The project made Zhang a nominee(候选人) of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, an award to celebrate teenagers who help solve major water challenges. She was the only nominee from the Chinese mainland in 2020.
After this successful experiment, Zhang made some samples and printed out flyers(传单) for her new formula. She gave them out to people at swimming pools and water parks. “With my formula, anyone can make sunscreen at home. You just need a blender to mix the oil and the powder,” she said.
Zhang wants to study environmental science in college. “I want to use my knowledge to make a better world,” she said.
21. What inspired Zhang to make a new kind of sunscreen?
A. Her desire to protect sea species.
B. Her wish to study environmental science.
C. A book published by the US National Park Service.
D. A project at Guangdong Experimental High School.
22. What happened after Zhang's successful experiment?
A. She handed out her samples to people.
B. She was accepted into a famous university.
C. She won the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.
D. She continued to make other environmentally friendly products.
23. Which of the following best describes Zhang Baoxin?
A. Curious and cheerful. B. Helpful and sociable.
C. Diligent and cautious. D. Creative and responsible.
A 22. A 23. D

根据第二段“Some chemicals in sunscreen, such as benzophenone, can kill coral. Every year, about 4,000 to 6,000 tons of sunscreen will flow into coral areas, according to the US National Park Service.”(防晒霜里的某些化学物质,比如二苯甲酮,会杀死珊瑚。 以及第三段“About one and half years ago, Zhang Baoxin, 17, who studies at Guangdong Experimental High School, read about this in an article. Then she had an idea – to make an environmentally friendly sunscreen to protect the marine environment.”(大约一年半以前,在广东实验高中就读的17岁的张宝新,在一篇文章中读到了这一点。
根据倒数第二段“After this successful experiment, Zhang made some samples and printed out flyers(传单) for her new formula. She gave them out to people at swimming pools and water parks.”(在这次成功的实验之后,张做了一些样品,并印制了她新配方的传单。
通读全文并根据最后一段“Zhang wants to study environmental science in college. “I want to use my knowledge to make a better world,” she said.”(张想在大学里学环境科学。

As the coronavirus pandemic wears on, one thing is clear: Many of us are turning to pets to help us deal with this challenging time in history.
In fact, as people remain stuck at home, the demand for adopting or fostering pets, particularly dogs, has risen worldwide, from Canada to India. Between March and September 2020, the number of foster pets in U.S. homes increased by 8 percent, according to PetPoint, which collects industry data on pet adoption.
While the health benefits of having a pet are well known from lowering blood pressure to reducing stress the relationship is complex, and how pet owners and their pets are coping during lengthy lockdowns is an open question.
To find out, researchers in Spain, Israel, and the United Kingdom conducted online surveys of pet owners in their countries. Their studies, published in three separate scientific journals, found that overall our animal friends have provided additional comfort.
But the research also revealed some concerning developments: Pandemic restrictions are making pet owners concerned for their pets' well-being. Not only that, but some pets are exhibiting signs of stress, such as increased barking, fear of loud or sudden noises, and anxiety when at home alone.
In April 2020, Jon Bowen, a behavior consultant at the Royal Veterinary College in London, asked 1,297 dog and cat owners in Spain questions about their feelings toward their pets and their animals' recent behavior. Most owners said their pets had provided “substantial support” during the pandemic, yet 62 percent of respondents said they thought their pets' quality of life had decreased. About 41 percent also reported observing behavioral changes in their animals during the pandemic, particularly dogs that had experienced behavioral problems in the past.
Plenty of research shows that dogs have emotions and can absorb what their owners are feeling particularly if an owner is emotionally dependent on them, says Bowen, whose study appeared in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior in May 2020.
24. What's the purpose of the research?
A. To find out the number of foster pets during the pandemic.
B. To show the benefit of adopting pets during the lockdowns.
C. To figure out how pets and their owners manage the lockdowns.
D. To find out the disadvantage of lockdowns on pets and their owners.
25. How did the researchers come to the conclusion?
A. By analyzing the previous data.
B. By writing separate scientific reports.
C. By doing Internet surveys in separate countries.
D. By comparing the present experiment with past ones.
26. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Dogs are emotionally dependent on their owners.
B. Long lockdowns have some negative effects on pets.
C. Most pets led a life of poor quality during the lockdowns.
D. Pet owners got on well with their pet during the pandemic.
27. Where can we most probably read this passage?
A. In a textbook B. In an encyclopedia C. In a magazine D. In a science fiction
C 25. C 26. B 27. C

Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but there is a problem: Everyone is wearing a mask. What a hassle!
Now, tech companies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask.
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology (E&T) reported. What's the secret? It's all about your eyes.
Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. As we get older, he said, our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same-even if we put on weight.
Another company, Geneva-based Tech5, has also been working on this kind of software. Tech5 has AI that measures the shape of your face. It also scans your iris (the colored part of your eyes). Tech5 hopes to ignore all of the face below the nose.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It's about public safety. For example, you don't need to present an ID card, which can be lost or stolen. It also means that germs aren't spread by touching things, said NEC's Shinya Takeshima. “Touchless verification(验证) has become extremely important due to... the coronavirus,” he said to Reuters. “[We] hope to contribute to safety and peace of mind.”
More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime. “It can detect crime suspects, terrorists,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang's vice president. Hanwang's technology is used by police in high-security settings, Reuters reported. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force and other governments.
28. What does the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. A substance. B. A device. C. A barrier. D. A bother.
29. The facial recognition software that can identify people with masks mainly depend on ________.
A. the forehead. B. the eye region. C. the shape of faces D. the facial expressions.
30. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about?
A. The future of facial recognition technology.
B. The benefits of facial recognition technology.
C. Different types of facial recognition software.
D. The problems with current facial recognition technology.
D 29. B 30. B

根据上文“Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but there is a problem: Everyone is wearing a mask.”(许多人依靠这项技术解锁手机、开门或快速支付,但有一个问题:每个人都戴着口罩)由此可知,这是一件麻烦事。
根据第四段“As we get older, he said, our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes.”(他说,随着年龄的增长,我们的脸会改变形状,但眼睛周围的区域不会)由此可知,面部识别软件能够识别戴口罩的人,主要依靠眼睛区域。
根据倒数第二段“Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It's about public safety.”(面部识别软件不仅仅是解锁你的手机。这也事关公共安全)根据最后一段“More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime.”(不仅如此,面部识别还可以用于打击犯罪)由此可知,最后两段主要在谈论面部识别技术的益处。故选B项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余。
For many tourists, London is a busy city full of museums and interesting things to see. But for the people who live in London, there are many different “London”. ____31____ For others, it's an area of poor housing and rundown shops.
In most places, the different areas are far apart. ____32____ Canary Wharf is a large business development in the London Docklands which contains Britain's three tallest buildings.
From 1802 to 1980, the area was one of the busiest ports in the world. ____33____ Canary Wharf itself takes its name from the sea trade with the Canary Islands, which are part of Spain.
During WWII, the ports area was bombed and nearly all the original warehouses(仓库) were destroyed. And after the 1950s, the port industry began to decline. Thousands lost their jobs, and the ports area lay in ruins. ____34____. And soon, it became a busy business and shopping area, with more than 500,000 shoppers going there every week.
____35____ Many of the people who live there are immigrant families from Somalia or Bangladesh. A charity worker said, “No matter how long you sit in a restaurant or bar in Canary Wharf, you will never see anybody from the Bengali community. These are two worlds that occupy the same space, but never actually intersect(交叉).”
A. Thousands of people lost their home.
B. However, a project to develop the area began in 1981.
C. And at one point more than 50,000 people worked there.
D. London has many poor communities where many immigrant families live.
E. But in one place the two worlds exist side by side: Canary Wharf, in east London.
F. For some, London is a big, rich party city, with expensive restaurants and exclusive clubs.
G. However, right beside the ultra-modern Canary Wharf development area, you can find some of the poorest parts of London.
F 32. E 33. C 34. B 35. G
根据后句“For others, it's an area of poor housing and rundown shops.”(对于其他人,它是一个住房简陋,商店少的地区)可知,此处应该填入与之对应的“对于一些人”, F选项的“For some, London is a big, rich party city, with expensive restaurants and exclusive clubs.”(对于一些人来说,伦敦是一个大的繁荣的城市,拥有昂贵的餐馆和排外性的俱乐部),与后句逻辑一致,故选F。
根据本段第一句的“In most places, the different areas are far apart”(在大部分地方,不同的地区往往相隔很远),后文谈到了伦敦与大部分地方不一样,E选项的“But in one place the two worlds exist side by side” (但是在一个地方,两个不同的世界并列存),伦敦就是那个不一样的地方,与前句是转折关系,逻辑一致,故选E。
根据空格前句“From 1802 to 1980, the area was one of the busiest ports in the world.”(从1802年到1980年,这个地区曾是世界上最忙碌的港口之一),B选项的 “And at one point more than 50,000 people worked there.”(曾几何时五万多工人在那里工作),是对前句的事实补充说明,逻辑一致,故选C。
根据空格后=前句“the port industry began to decline. Thousands lost their jobs, and the ports area lay in ruins.”(运输行业开始衰落,成千上万的人失去了他们的工作,港口变成了一片废墟),以及后句的“And soon, it became a busy business and shopping area”(很快,他又变成一个忙碌的商业和购物区),从衰败到重新崛起,经历了一些东西,C选项的 “However, a project to develop the area began in 1981”(然而,1981年一个发展该地区的计划开始了),与前后文逻辑一致,故选B。
根据本段最后一句“These are two worlds that occupy the same space, but never actually intersect”(这是占据着同一个空间但是从不交叉的两个世界)可知,本段主要强调与上段中提到的忙碌繁荣区域的对比,只有G选项的“However, right beside the ultra-modern Canary Wharf development area, you can find some of the poorest parts of London”(然而,就在繁荣的超现代的Canary Wharf发展区的旁边,你能找到伦敦最穷的区),符合逻辑,故选G。

“No 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle(跨栏) and...” Cheers broke out.
“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls' 100-meter hurdles!” The crowd went wild.
“County championships(锦标赛), here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes(钉鞋). They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.
“Don't forget, guys,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”
Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. Jobie smiled with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before. And it wasn't long before everything in her path was a hurdle: flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister, Teka!
The day of Marisol's party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. “Perfect.” She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.
“Jobie!” Two of Jobie's teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they yelled. “You have to try the slide.”
Jobie looked toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The biggest slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and dashed(猛冲) toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.
Jobie couldn't get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes.

As she eyed the area from a distance, panic set in. Jobie picked up the pace, her heart pounding louder the closer she got. When she reached the place she'd left them, her heart sank. “My lucky spikes are gone!” she screamed. Jobie's teammates helped her search the whole park, but there was no sign of her lucky spikes. “So long, gold.” Jobie was hopeless, tears welling up in her eyes.
The next day, Jobie turned up in a new pair of spikes for the championships. Uneasily, Jobie shuffled her feet. For her, the loss of her lucky spikes meant the loss of the gold medal. “Next up is the girls' 100-meter hurdles,” said the announcer. Jobie took several deep breaths, and her teammates encouraged her as she walked down to the starting line. Feeling inspired, Jobie decided to try her best. In a flash, Jobie was off and cleared hurdle after hurdle. She got closer and closer, and cheers broke out. Wearing a wide smile, Jobie whispered, “No lucky spikes. Lucky me.”
