    A. Their parents.
    B. Their friends.
    C. Their kids.
    【答案】17. B 18. B 19. C 20. B
    【解析】
【原文】W: We celebrate Christmas in winter. We have known that Santa Claus sends gifts. But do you know how people celebrate their Christmas when their year-round climate is warm? They have no winters.
For instance, in California, it is warm all the year round. The Christmas traditions there may seem unusual to those used to more traditional images. In Santa Cruz, California, Santa Claus takes his gifts on a surfboard, wearing a red diving suit. As long as he comes carrying presents, Surfing Santa would probably be popular anywhere. In Australia, many young people would go to the beach, enjoying the warm weather with a beach barbecue and cold beer. In recent years, Bondi Beach has become a very popular place for visitors from foreign countries to gather and celebrate. It’s not uncommon for numbers to reach 40,000 on Christmas Day.
While in cooler areas, many young people simply see Christmas as a time to escape their immediate families and celebrate with friends.

Antarctica is one of the last untouched frontiers on the planet. Despite its tough conditions, an Antarctic trip is far less dangerous nowadays than in the past. Here are the most popular routes to Antarctica, with different start points, pathways, and modes of transportation.
    1. Ship tour from Argentina
Departing from Ushuaia is the most popular route when going to Antarctica from South American ports. Ushuaia is situated closer to Antarctic Peninsula (半岛) than other departure points, hence you can have more time spent on the scenic peninsula admiring icebergs, glaciers and abundant wildlife. There are a variety of ships from Ushuaia to choose.
    Duration: 6 to 24 days
Cost: Between USD 6,000 and USD 25,000
Good to know: If you still want to visit some other incredible South American destinations, some suggestions are the Galapagos Islands, Rio de Janeiro and Machu Picchu.
    2. Fly-ship tour from Chile
If you want to avoid spending two days crossing the Drake Passage and encounter rough seas in the bad weather, you can choose a fly-ship package. This involves flying to King George Island, which is right off the west coast of Antarctica Peninsula, to join a ship trip. You can also go ashore to experience the same sightseeing and wildlife opportunities.
    Duration: 8 days
Cost: Between USD 10000 and USD 15,000
Good to know: If you have limited time and do not wish to spend more time on a ship than is necessary, then the fly-ship option is ideal.
    3. Ship tour from Australia or New Zealand
Although you are unlikely to encounter any other ship all the way, you will see huge icebergs, Mount Erebus (an active volcano), emperor penguins, scientific bases and the sites of historic 20th century Antarctic adventures. If you are looking for a feeling of vast isolation and remoteness, this is the trip to take!
    Duration: 26 to 30 days
Cost: USD 16,000 and USD 30,000
Good to know: Ships departing from New Zealand and Australia are smaller and carry no more than 50 passengers. These trips are rare and should be booked well in advance.
    21. Which of the following is the closest to the Antarctica Peninsula?
    A. The Galapagos Island. B. Ushuaia.
    C. King George Island. D. Mount Erebus.
    22. Where will you set off considering saving the most time on the ship?
    A. Argentina. B. Chile. C. Australia. D. New Zealand.
    23. Which route is the cheapest about the average daily cost?

Agatha Christie, the creator of one of the most enduring figures in crime literature-Hercule Poirot, is the best-selling author of all time.
She was born on 15 September, 1890 in Torquay, South West England, into a comfortably well off middle-class family. Although her mother, Clara, an excellent storyteller, did not want her to learn to read too early, she taught herself to read by the age of five. Agatha read the children’s stories of the time, invented imaginary friends and began writing poems when she was very young. At the age of eleven there was a shock. Her father, not well after suffering financial difficulties, died after a series of heart attacks. There were more money worries and talks of selling their house, but Clara and her daughters managed to find a way forward.
By the age of 18 Agatha was amusing herself with writing short stories. But it was during the First World War that Agatha turned to writing detective stories. Her debut detective novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles took some time to finish and even longer to find a publisher. She started writing partly in response to a bet from her sister Madge that she couldn’t write a good detective story and partly to ease the tiredness of working in a Red Cross Hospital in Torquay. Her new knowledge in poisons was also put to good use. The murderer’s use of poison was so well described that when the book was eventually published Agatha received a special honour for a writer of fiction-a review in Pharmaceutical (药学) Journal.
The inspiration for Hercule Poirot came from Agatha’s own life experience. During the First World War there were Belgian refugees (难民) in most parts of the English countryside, Torquay being no exception. Although he was not based on any particular person, Agatha thought that a Belgian refugee, a former great Belgian policeman, would make an excellent detective for The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Hercule Poirot was born.
    24. What can we know about Agatha’s young age?
    A. Her mother encouraged her to read. B. Her talent for language was shown.
    C. Her father died in a medical accident. D. Her family always had financial problems.
    25. What does the underlined word “debut” probably mean?
    A. The first known. B. The most thrilling.
    C. The best praised. D. The last published.
    26. What is one of the reasons why Agatha began to write detective stories?
    A. She wanted to prove something to her sister. B. She had nothing else to do during the war.
    C. She could use her knowledge of poisons. D. She met a former great Belgium policeman.
    27. What happens in The Mysterious Affair at Styles?
    A. The murder takes place in Belgium. B. The detective is named Hercule Poirot.
    C. Hercule Poirot is born in a refugee’s family. D. A Torquay policeman commits the murder.
    【答案】24. B 25. A 26. A 27. B

The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, "It's a little damp(潮湿的)outside.”Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, "She isn't exactly friendly." Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr. Bean is a good example of this kind of humour. Mr. Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990.
Mr. Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr. Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr. Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.
    28. Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?
    A. The British often enlarge the fact.
    B. British jokes are connected with many different cultures.
    C. The British try to make out that something is less important than it is.
    D. British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.
    29. The author explains understatement by__________.
    A. using examples B. making comparisons
    C. following time order D. describing a process
    30. Mr. Bean makes people laugh by__________.
    A. telling funny stories B. making jokes about others' accents
    C. copying how others behave D. using his body movements and facial expressions
    31. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. British Humour in Comedy B. Humour in Different Cultures
    C. Developing Your Sense of Humour D. Understanding British Humour
    【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. D
    【解析】
    【分析】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍的是如何理解英式幽默。
    【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.”及第二段中的“Understatement means saying less than you think or feel.”
根据第二段中的“For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, "It's a little damp(潮湿的)outside.”Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, "She isn't exactly friendly."”可知,作者是通过举在雨中淋湿和不礼貌地对别人大喊大叫的例子的来解释轻描淡写的,故A项正确。
    【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Mr. Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh.”可知,憨豆先生是通过肢体动作和面部表情使人发笑的,故D项正确。
    【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.”及倒数第二段中的“Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others.”
【点睛】如果文章没有统一的主题句,需要根据段落主题总结文章主题,例如本篇第4题,根据第一段中的“However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.”可知,外国人很难理解英式幽默,要记住的主要一点是英国人经常使用轻描淡写,再根据倒数第二段中的“Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others.”可知,另一个理解英式幽默的关键是英国人不仅喜欢嘲笑别人还喜欢嘲笑自己,因此本文的主题是如何理解英式幽默。
    D
On May 31 a key meeting of the Communist Party of China unveiled a policy that would allow all couples to have up to three children.
The move is expected to maximize the population's role in driving economic and social growth. The three -child policy is also expected to prevent the decline in the nation's birthrate and deal with the challenge of a rapidly aging population,China Daily reported.
China's annual number of newborns has fallen for four years in a row.The country's total birthrate(the average number of children born to each woman)stood-at 1.3 in 2020. The number is below the rate of 2.1 that would maintain a stable population, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The declining birthrate has also brought a sharp increase in the proportion of the population aged 60 or above, rising from 10.3 percent to 18.7 percent in the past decade. An increasingly elderly population will cause a lack of young labor force. Therefore,it's not good for economic growth, according to Chen Youhua,a professor at Nanjing University.
In fact, the new birth policy is a step to further relax the family planning policy. The one-child policy was introduced in the 1970s and aimed to control the fast growing population. Then in 2013 China allowed couples to have second child if either parent was an only child, and three years later, all couples were allowed to have two children.
However, not all people have shown their support for this latest policy. Many couples complained about the rising costs of raising a child. A netizen named Qinfeng commented,"High cost of education and both the physical and mental exhaustion stopped me from having more than one child." Also, many women hesitate to give birth because that could mean sacrificing their career prospects, according to Mu Guangzong, a professor at Peking University.
In that case, Mu noted that it is better to take supporting measures with the three-child policy, such as more preferential policies for couples that would ease their parental burden.
    32. What might NOT be the main cause for the new policy?
    A. To increase the population's role in economic and social development.
    B. To maintain a stable population.
    C. To keep the birth rate at 1.3.
    D. To address the challenge of the aging population.
    33. What can be known from the text?
    A. China's annual number of newborns has fallen for decades.

In 10 years, you’ll become a psychological consultant. With the advanced technology, there’s no need for patients to consult a doctor in person. By the way, you are the one who will invent the chip of the “headpad”. Thousands of patients have fully recovered thanks to your invention.

“I never wanted to come on this stupid hiking trip anyway!” Jeff’s voice echoed across the narrow canyon (峡谷). Nothing was as pretty as it had seemed when they first hiked this way to their campsite yesterday morning. Before, the rocks had been an interesting challenge. Now, they were obstacles that were threatening their lives. Steep cliffs had earlier been natural curiosities, but now they were nature’s weapons, beating and rubbing Jeff and his father who pushed through as quickly as they could.
His father stopped for a third time, pale and out of breath, and turned to look at the 12-year-old boy. “This is hard on you, son, I know. But you’ve got to come through with courage and calmness.” “But I’m scared! I don’t even want to have courage!” he complained, turning his head the other way, and wiped his eyes across his arm. “If not courage, fine.” his father replied strictly. “Then have enough love for your sister to think this through!” He gently placed his hand on the boy’s shoulder and continued, more softly this time. “I’m just holding you back. You’re young, but you’re strong and fast. Do you remember the way back from here to the road, if you had to go alone?”
Jeff flashed back to the painful scene of his sister at their campsite this morning. She’d been bitten by a snake, before long she could barely move, and the pain seemed to be getting worse. She needed medical attention right away, so leaving her at the campsite and seeking help was their only choice. “Jeff? Jeff, could you do it? Could you climb up the canyon and make it without me?”
Jeff looked past his father’s encouraging eyes to the end of the canyon, several miles away. He nodded slowly as the path and the plan began to take hold in his mind. “What was the name of that little town we stopped in, Dad?” “Flint. We parked at the side of the main road a few miles out of town.” Jeff thought about this and then nodded.
    Paragraph 1:
He waved goodbye to his father and moved on.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
Finally, he made it to the main road.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】One possible version:
Paragragh 1: He waved goodbye to his father and moved on. With great caution, he climbed over sharp rocks, crawled through dead branches and avoided the dangerous creatures, making his way up. At one point, he stopped just to catch his breath when suddenly, he stumbled over a rock and fell. A sharp pain went across his leg. “No, I can’s stop,” he thought, struggling to his feet. With blood dripping down his leg, he limped on. Rising stone by stone, he was closer and closer to the edge.
Paragraph 2: Finally, he made it to the main road. Much to his disappointment, not a single person was in sight. He was just at a loss what to do when he heard the deafening noise of a vehicle. “A truck!” he exclaimed with excitement. Gathering all his energy, he yelled, waving both his arms. The truck pulled over. Anxiously, Jeff explained what happened. The driver instantly called the local rescue team for help. Eventually, Jeff, together with two medical workers, hurried back to the campsite just in time to save his sister.
